The premise of Pay It Forward

begins with doing a favour for

    another person without any

expectation of being paid back.Indeed, one would request that

the recipient of that favour do

    the same for someone else.

Every tradition starts somewhere. For Danes

Lasse and Henriette its in their Belgian home,

where they settle down for dinner and share

    Christmas tales with their children

Who wants to be away from home

at Christmas? Lasse and his wife

    Henriette are both Danish but

theyve lived in Brussels for the

past 10 years. In fact, this is

    the only home their children

travel back to visit relatives for

the holiday, but a few years ago

    they started a new tradition

    TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,

BUT THERES STILL A LOT OF STIRRING GOING ON

Last week we had a party with more than 70 guests. Brussels is a real melting pot and there

were people of about 18 nationalities, including close friends from Denmark. We had a cocktail

competition, with 40 or 50 of us squeezed in the kitchen making drinks that was fun!

But Christmas itself is more intimate, just for the family and close friends. The Danish celebrate

Christmas on 24 December thats when the whole family gathers for Christmas dinner. Theres

Being an expat has its advantages, says Lasse. We wouldnt be able to get away with a bright red kitchen in

Copenhagen! We chose a galley design and included a breakfast bar where we eat most of our meals. Im

pleased I left the layout to the IKEA kitchen designer. The space works. We have drawers down low that the

children can access it makes it easier for them to help at mealtimes and plenty of cupboard space to keep

worktops clear, leaving room for the family to cook together. O ABSTRAKT/FAKTUM kitchen unitsHigh-gloss red

Christmas is a time tocelebrate what is specialabout all the other days

    EVERYDAYMAGIC

Swedish artists Carl and Karin Larsson portrayed

a world that is both everyday and magical. At its

heart was their family home, Lilla Hyttns, and

    WKHFRXSOHVWH[WLOHVIXUQLVKLQJVDQGSDLQWLQJVIRXQG

their inspiration in rural Swedish life. Their decoration

is recognised by people today as quintessentially

Swedish, says trends analyst Paula Eklund. At its root

was the idea of good design for the practical, everyday

life at home, but imbued with a playful spirit.

This year, we are celebrating Karins 150th birthday,

explains Lilla Hyttns museum director Lena Nyberg.

Her style is still so modern, she was way ahead of her

time. Her simple rocking chair design similar to the

LILLBERG rocking chair from IKEA was so shocking

to the carpenter who built it, he insisted on delivering

    it to her at night!

The Larssons love of everything in its purest form

was rooted in the natural environment, says Paula.

world. Today, the Larssons vision still strikes a chord.

Never more so than on festive occasions, when we

have an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy simple

    pleasures surrounded by our family.
