DESCRIPTION

These gloriously diverse plays highlight, each in its unique way, the heights to which we can rise when we heed the call to be our best selves. These stories call forth acts of heroism and sacrifice at every level of human experience. And at the center of each is love. What, indeed, will we do for love?

LOOKING BACK AT LAST SEASON…Celebrated 25 years of engaging audiences with high quality theater that showcased the talent, dedication, and all-out heart of our Company collaborators. Threw down a Silver Anniversary season that rocked with authentic emotion, intellectual challenge, and top-notch entertainment. Birthday partied. Gala partied. Afterglow partied. Volunteer Rave partied. Cast partied. What a year!

So, you ask, after all the excitement of our 25th season, are we exhausted? Are we emotionally drained? Are we ready to sit back and relax for a while? Hell, no! We are totally re-energized. We are quivering with impatience to get started on Season 26. We are completely in love with the plays we’ll be doing this season, and we are dancing with joy at the thought of sharing them with you.

We want to start out big in our second quarter-century, so this season has as its foundation the opportunity to explore two of the biggest emotions we lucky humans can feel: love and courage.

These gloriously diverse plays highlight, each in its unique way, the heights to which we can rise when we heed the call to be our best selves. These stories call forth acts of heroism and sacrifice at every level of human experience. And at the center of each is love. What, indeed, will we do for love?

So send Darryl your subscription form and come on down to Water Street. We are rushing full tilt into the next season, and we want all of you to be with us. Live Arts is going to forge some red-hot awesome theater this year—don’t miss any of it!

With anticipation,

ABOUT THE PLAY

Six characters, three stories, and only the mysterious moon floating through her magical phases sees them all. One life-changing coincidence later, their journeys begin that curious braiding that can connect each of us to all of us, and make every strand stronger. Together and separately they search—for their destiny, for forgiveness, for acceptance, and finally, perhaps, just for a moment’s peace together. While they search, old tales are told, folk remedies are shared, and always, the Baby glows.

ABOUT THE PLAY

I want to figure some things out, that’s all. I love you, so I need to understand. Why do some get well and others, not? Is it a chance, or a choice? And that patient who became the healer for her world—how did she do that? What is the connection between treatment and getting better? And Mother, will you please, for one minute, just shut up! Sorry, I do love you, but they don’t need a drink, they don’t need a snack, they just need to help me. I’m trying to figure this out and you’re so distracting. I know I can do this, I know how to do it, and as soon as I figure it out, I’ll be able to…

ABOUT THE PLAY

The Boy had no home, no friends. He even got his name by accident. All the grownups he knew lied (no wonder he won’t grow up!). The Girl is an apprentice Starcatcher who tells great bedtime stories. They share the starstuff adventure with pirates, mermaids, islanders who hate the English but love gourmet pasta, and Queen Victoria (God Save Her!). Come along while we turn the story you’ve known all your life into a whole new-yet-familiar adventure.

WRITTEN BY WILL ENO

ABOUT THE PLAY

Simple conversations, complex communication; minor irritations, major confrontations; everyday affection, transcendent love. Winner of two Drama Desk Special Awards and nominated for three Drama League Awards in 2014, Will Eno's poignant look at everyday people is full of gentle humor and wry commentary on how we deal with our own mortality. The Joneses (both couples) are doing their very best to navigate modern life in all its glorious everyday chaos, while fighting for the quiet time and inner space to make sense of it all. This play will warm your heart and break your heart, showing that there is somebody’s hero in each of us, even though none of us can be heroic all the time. And as long as we stick by each other, we don’t have to be.

WRITTEN BY OSCAR WILDE

ABOUT THE PLAY

Think “Downton Abbey” with the knives out. The master satirist of the Victorian era skewers the upper crust of British society as they indulge their penchant for carving each other to pieces. This is hypocrisy with a Public School accent, mercilessly exposed by a keen observer. Join us for this brilliantly acerbic variation on a universal theme that resonates across time, class, and national borders—a classic play, full of Wilde’s signature wit, wisdom, and a surprising snap.

Hi Friends,

This coming season will mark my fifteenth year as a member of the Live Arts family. For fifteen years I’ve been happily busy welcoming the wonderful people who come to enjoy our shows. We’ve come a long way since I joined the staff in 2002, and this year, I want you to come and celebrate that journey with me!

I’d love to have all of my subscriber friends renew this year. There’s no better way to show your appreciation of the work the Live Arts Company does than to subscribe to the whole season. Oh, wait, yes there is a better way—bring a friend. If every Live Arts subscriber brings one new subscriber to our house this year, I’ll be busier—and happier—than ever! Our target this year is 700 subscriptions, and we know that our best salespeople are you, the folks who spread the word.

So call a friend who doesn’t know us. Tell your friend about the great shows we produce here, and how exciting live theater can be. Explain the perks of reserved seating at every performance, the great savings that a subscription offers versus single ticket purchases, the Live Arts t-shirt—all the ways we let our subscribers know how much we love them. Just look on the other side of this card—there’s a chart that lays it all out for them (and you)!

So share your brochure and make a copy of the subscription form for someone you know and love, so they can become someone we know and love. There will always be room in the Live Arts family for more!

See you soon!

OPEN AUDITIONS FOR EVERY SHOW

Live Arts holds open auditions for all of our productions, and none of our mainstage shows are pre-cast. Everyone interested in being considered for a role is warmly welcomed to the audition room (which is absolutely not as scary as you think) with open arms. Notices about the dates and times for auditions are published in local media sources, and there is always information about upcoming auditions, plus valuable tips on preparing for your audition, available at our website. Doesn’t matter if you’ve never acted before—jump in and give it a try! Email Tracie ([email protected]) to reserve your audition slot.

EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

We’ve got classes in performing arts and sciences all year long. Classes for young people to help them build their skills and their confidence (and to build the next generation of theater makers and theater-goers). Classes for grown-ups who want to become actors, or become better actors, or learn to tap dance or—you tell us what you want to learn, and if it’s a theater thing, we’ll help. Questions? Contect Director of Education, Mike Long, at 434.977.4177 x100 or [email protected].

OTHER ONEDERFUL OPPORTUNITIES (SEE WHAT WE DID THERE?)

We do cabarets, staged readings, workshops, seminars, and intensives on special topics, including technical theater specialties, throughout the year. The Readers Circle meets monthly to read and discuss a play. The Playwrights Lab meets twice a month to hear and discuss works in progress by local playwrights. Our Foundry programs boast myriad opportunities to create, stretch, and explore. Meanwhile, check out the website (www.livearts.org) for all the cool things we’re already doing.
