The mission of the Sun ValleyCenter for the Arts is to stimulate and provoke the imagination whileopening hearts and minds through diverse arts programs.

Dear Members and Friends, The Sun Valley Center for the Arts is proud to present the 2008/2009 Performing Arts Series. This series runs the gamut from classical to jazz, solo ukulele to an eight piece brass band and beyond. It promises familiar sounds as well as surprisingly new ones. The concerts begin in November and continue until May, reflecting the Center’s com-mitment to program full seasons of arts events for our community. This year we are offering season tickets to these shows. By purchasing the series, you receive a 20% discount and priority seating at all the concerts. In addition to the public performances, three of the groups (African Children’s Choir, Perla Batalla and the Hot 8 Brass Band) will be visit-ing local schools to perform for and work with the community’s students. The Center is able to provide these opportunities to the schools free of charge because of the generosity of our members and donors. African Children’s ChoirNov. 2, 2008, 7:30 pm Church of the Big Wood, Ketchum

What do Queen Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela have in common? Both have enjoyed perfor-mances by the African Children’s Choir. The choir has performed with Paul McCartney and Bobby McFerrin, and appeared at Live 8 in London and on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. The African Children’s Choir brings hope and joy to audiences throughout the world while shining a spotlight on the plight of Africa’s children. With a focus on education, the choir currently supports relief and development projects for several thousand underprivileged children throughout Africa.

Don’t miss this encore performance by Perla after her stunning debut last year in the Wood River Valley! One concertgoer dubbed it “the best concert I have ever seen,” and once you experi-ence her mesmerizing renditions of Christmas classics combined with her soulful interpretations of Leonard Cohen and her original composi-tions, you’ll agree that her voice is in a class with the best singers of our age. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Batalla first gained international attention as a backup singer for Leonard Cohen. Her “mestiza music” is a vibrant mixture of her South American, Mexican and American roots and conveys great passion, spirit and love.

If there’s such a thing as “born musicians,” then the accomplished sons of famed jazz pianist Dave Brubeck definitely qualify. The Brubeck brothers have been playing together all their lives, and yet they produce innovative jazz that sounds brand new. The talented brothers— Dan on drums, Chris on trombone and bass—and their bandmates, Mike DeMicco on guitar and Chuck Lamb on piano, have brought audiences all over the world to their feet. Favorites at jazz festivals across the country including Monterey, Detroit, Sedona, Ra-vinia and Las Vegas, the Brubeck Brothers Quartet also conducts workshops and clinics at universi-ties nationwide.

Formed in Shanghai, this versatile ensemble is known for its passionate musicality, virtuoso tech-nique and multicultural innovation. The Shanghai Quartet melds the delicacy of Eastern music with the power of Western repertoire, from traditional Chinese folk music to the most challenging clas-sical works. The quartet regularly tours the great

music centers of North and South America, Asia and Europe, including frequent appearances at New York’s Carnegie Hall. To celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2008–09, the quartet will premiere commissions from compos-ers Chen Yi, Krzysztof Penderecki and jazz pianist Dick Hyman.

His virtuosity defies label or category. Playing jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco and rock, Jake’s mission is to show everyone that the ukulele is capable of so much more than traditional Hawaiian music.

New Orleans’ own Hot 8 Brass Band has epit-omized New Orleans street music for over a decade. The band plays the traditional “second line” parades, hosted each Sunday afternoon by the social aid and pleasure clubs, infusing its performances with the funk and energy that make New Orleans music loved around the world. Born and raised in New Orleans, the members of the Hot 8 Brass Band began playing together in high school. What makes the Hot 8 so special are the sounds they coax from their well-loved, well-worn horns. An evening with the Hot 8 is like no other!
