LIU-SPS: BI review

Introduction

Page 2: LIU-SPS: BI review

LIU-SPS• Constitute a working group with a core team, define the work,

coordinate activities

• Evaluate/Confirm the actual maximum performance of the accelerator

• Propose the optimum scenario for the accelerator upgrade - imply forming task forces when needed to study specific subjects

• Prepare WP (M+P), establish roadmap – EVM

• Follow the procurement, tests and implementation of the changes

• Prepare and commission the upgraded accelerator

Page 3: LIU-SPS: BI review

Aims

• Review requests and possibilities• Agree on main functional requirements where possible• Define detailed follow up

– Further study/discussions– Specifications– Deadlines– Responsibles

Page 4: LIU-SPS: BI review

Beam instrumentation topics• Already discussed and first draft of “requirements” document

circulated, and available on LIU EDMS site (!)

Page 5: LIU-SPS: BI review

Requirements – beam size

• Wirescanners (high priority)– Individual bunch gating– Two reliable measurements per WS per cycle (IN and OUT)– Two WS per plane operational to make cross checks– Define limits (intensity, emittance) of present systems– Some display upgrades (add SC number, beam intensity, ...)– Deployment of IN/OUT correction algorithm– Calibration between PS, TT2/10, SPS, TI2/8 and LHC measurements

• BGI monitor– Make available for MD– Continuous beam size measurement through cycle with bunch gating– Data logging

• BSRT– Check status and investigate prospects for transverse BQM

Page 6: LIU-SPS: BI review

• MOPOS– Check coherency of proposed upgrade and include LIU requirements

(parameter range)

– For optics measurements• Investigate increasing Q kicker strength above 100 GeV• Investigate AC dipole for SPS• Improve global setting of delays

• LHC BPMs– Connect all 3 monitors

– Improve data logging

– Investigate acquiring 2e5 [turns * bunches]

Requirements – beam position

Page 7: LIU-SPS: BI review

• Ionisation chamber BLMs– Upgrade readout and SW to 40 us time bins (like LHC)

– Add capture property, for e.g. injection and on demand

• Fast (diamond) BLMs– Add fast BLMs at key locations

– Easy readout and data logging

– Define locations and total number

Requirements – beam losses

Page 8: LIU-SPS: BI review

• Continuous Q and BBQ– Gating on single bunches

– Profit from LHC developments

Requirements – tune

Page 9: LIU-SPS: BI review

• FBCT– Provide intensity measurement over first 1000 turns

– Investigate problem of limited bandwidth

– Cross calibration with PS and TL monitors

– Solve issues seen with different bunch spacing

– Improve logging and data retrieval

Requirements – beam current

Page 10: LIU-SPS: BI review

• Injection matching monitor– Provide operational injection matching monitor using segmented PMs

– Details of specifications to agree

Requirements – injection matching

Page 11: LIU-SPS: BI review

• Schottky monitor– Any prospects for long/transverse Schottky data in SPS

Requirements – Schottky

Page 12: LIU-SPS: BI review

• Headtail monitor– Provide reliable data in H and V (simultaneously?)

Requirements – Headtail monitor
