Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3

PASTORS CORNER: I wish to thank Ellen Yacobozzi and Don Gates for their service on the Parish Council. Ellen and Don have met monthly for four years (each serving 2 consecutive terms of two years) to reflect upon issues facing the parish and to advise me on items that I present to them. As a consultative body of the parish they are able to see the bigger picture of the parish and how the various ministries interact or do not interact with one another. While on counsel these two individuals may not have been dealing with major issues such as church construction or merger, but they dealt with what

may be a bigger challenge. And that is the challenge of facing a growing parish at a time when most parishes are not growing. The Parish Council has been dealing with the day to day routine and ordinary issues as a parish community and dealing with these issues can be more challenging. The ordinary issues are not often exciting nor do they catch the attention of most parishioners. However, these issues are very important and take a strong commitment to address. I thank Ellen and Don for the difficult work of dealing with the ordinary and routine issues that face the parish. Please keep them in your prayers as they transition into other ministries within the parish.

OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE

RCIA begins this Wednesday, September 7th at 7:00pm in the parish hall. The RCIA is for anyone who is interested in learning more about the Catholic Church with an interest in becoming Catholic. We meet every Wednesday from September until May for about an hour and a half. There are no tests although you will find your beliefs tested at times. Reception into the Church takes place at the Easter Vigil which is April 15th this year. For those who have never been baptized they are baptized during the Vigil mass. For those who have been baptized in another Christian church they are not baptized again but rather they make a Profession of Faith and then together with the newly baptized are Confirmed and receive Holy Communion. There is no commitment until the middle of November when candidates are presented at mass on the weekend to the community and together with the community journeys through prayer and support to the Easter sacraments. The RCIA sessions consist of topics regarding Scripture, Sacraments, and Discipleship and are presented in the context of faith sharing rather than an academic class structure. For more information contact me, Sr. Kathleen, Grace Ogonek or Sally Logar. Please keep in your prayers those who are considering joining the Catholic Church. INTERESTED IN LEARNING more about your Catholic Faith? This year we are inviting anyone who would like to learn more or update their faith to join in the RCIA sessions. These open sessions will only be for six weeks at which point there will be

options for separate adult faith formation programs. The topics are: September 14: Who is Jesus Today? September 21: God is…. September 28: Jesus’ Life Lessons October 5: Teach Us to Pray October 12: Mystery of Suffering October 19: Head-Heart-Action You are welcome to attend all or as many as you would like. The RCIA meets at 7:00pm on Wednesdays and these open sessions will begin on September 14th. CONFIRMATION: Any baptized adult Catholics who have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation and are looking to complete their baptism through this sacrament is asked to contact Fr. John. There is a separate program from the youth preparation and the RCIA for adults which consists of four classes culminating in the celebration of Confirmation in the Spring. GLUTEN FREE HOSTS: If you require Gluten Free hosts, please let the Mass Coordinator know before mass and they will place one in a special container and inform Father John. FOLLOW YOUR PATH You have to do your own growing no matter how tall your grandfather was. —Abraham Lincoln

“Why Join a Music Ministry?” by Rob Keshock, Parish Music Director

Make Friends Any time you challenge yourself with a group of people, all of you develop something in common and ultimately a bond forms. Devoting yourself to a choir at Our Lady Queen of Peace will give you a new way to measure yourself and grow, both individually and as a group. Even if youʹre not a social butterfly, pouring energy and emotion into holy music will bring you close to your choir mates.

The Essence of the Choir Showing praise, love, appreciation and joy for God and his kingdom are all things you do when you sing in the church choir at Our Lady Queen of Peace . Those are good traits you should be proud to express. Participation in church activities is always a very special and good deed that brings you close to God.

Learn History, Music and Performance By immersing yourself in choir music, youʹll develop a new attachment to the Bible. Added exposure will make you more adept with regards to stories, language and context. As a stage performer youʹll develop confidence singing and may wish to pursue public speaking or other forms of music.

Come See for Yourself OLQP Choir rehearsals (high school age and up) are from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the church each Monday. The Jr. Choir / Teen rehearsals (Grades 2 –12) are from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the church on Saturdays. Please consider joining a music ministry. We have saved a seat for you!
