• The workshop was carried out with the help of of Ann Wigmore foundation in

Lithuania.

• The director of this foundation, living food activist and lecturer Paulius Jarusevičius

shared the idea of living foods (living Foods are foods that contain enzymes), talked

about how to overcome illnesses naturally, how to use wheatgrass (its juice) and fresh

edible sprouts, how to grow greens at home.

• Tasting fresh sunflower sprouts;

• Explaining the healthy reasons to eat sunflower sprouts (they contain high amounts of

zinc, vitamin E, are high in B vitamins, etc.);

• Sharing business ideas (e.g. growing edible sprouts for marketing purposes, opening fresh juice bar,

etc.)

• Tasting pickled beets and their juice.

• Explaining the healthy reasons to eat them.

• Workshop was carried out with the help of herbalist, advocate of healthy living Dale Petraitiene

WORKSHOP “LITHUANIAN MEDICINAL PLANTS”

Lecture on medicinal plants:

• Healing powers of plants growing in Lithuanian forests and meadows.• History of Lithuanian medicinal plants.• Herbal remedies in traditional and contemporary medicine.

Tasting:• Tasting of dried dandelion root;• Trying different herbal teas recipes.

• Learners were delighed by the first workhop run by herbalist Dale Petraitiene in May, so she was asked to

come back again.

• Discussion about use of wild plants for food and medicine.

• Most listeners were surprised by a possibility to include Lithuanian nettle in our daily diet. (Freshly crushed nettle

can be used in soup and salad recipes. Cooked nettle can be used in a wide variety of recipes).

• The project participants had a great opportunity to see, touch, smell and even taste fresh herbal plants brought

by Dale Petrainiene.

• Everybody enjoyed tasting different herbal teas and trying to find their favourite.

EMBROIDERY CLASSES

The goal – to create the embroidered picture of the BEST logo, chosen by the inmates.

METHODOLOGY USED: • Learners teachning learners (inmates serving as teachers); • The method helped to engage prisoners in educational planning, teaching, evaluating, decision-making, and more.

WORKSHOP “FRESH JUICES”

• Health benefits of fresh fruit and vegetables juices were discussed.• Tasting freshly squeezed juice (rich tomato juice, beetroot juice mixed with apple juice, carrot juice, carrot juice mixed with apple juice).• Project participants were tought to produce „glotnutis“ (some kind of purree or thick shake) of pumpkins and pears. „Glotnutis“ is great for breakfast – it helps to start your day in a better way).

MAINTAINING OUR FOREST GARDEN

Successful implementation of forest gardening idea:

• Our experiment resulted in a high yield.

• Forest gardening was less labor intensive than managing a conventional garden.

• Forest gardening was practiced by the inmates of all different levels of gardening skill.

• Forest gardening education will bring lasting results (the participants of the project can begin to apply this idea immediately into their daily life as well as share what they have learned with others).
