• People use “Kafkaesque” to mean senseless and sinister complexity

• Extestentilast – focus on human emotions/rel. Not science based.

• Franz was considered one of the most important and influential in 20th century (unique views)

• Ideas authoritian (felt that it was cruel and not understandable)

• Absurdist- absurdity of existence (humnan life) and finding reasons for everything.

Spotlight Metamorphosis

• Known as Franz Kafka’s masterpiece.

• Lends itself to psychological, sociological or existential interpretations.

• His writing is an odd mixture of startlingly dramatic images or situations.

“Anyone who cannot come to terms with his life while he is alive needs one hand to ward off a little his despair over his fate... but with his other hand he can note down what he sees among the ruins.” – Franz Kafka

The Metamorphosis (1912) is Kafka’s most important short stories, his masterpiece.

The Trial (1925) is one of Kafka’s most successful novel, it was published one year after his death.

The Castle is Kafka’s final novel, he died before he had the opportunity to complete the story.

Kafka also had his diaries where he wrote about his ideas and made notes about his tormented life.

“Books are a narcotic.”
