June sees the return of the popular event, Royston Open Secrets on Therfield Heath. Open Secrets is an annual event for all the family to enjoy, showcasing all that the Royston area has to offer. It’s a great way to meet the small businesses and organisations, many of whom don’t have a shop front. Expect arena displays, activities, a classic car show and an agility course for dogs. You can find out more at www.open-secrets.co.uk

Also on the Heath is Royston in Blue, the 5k family fun run/walk in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. Last year over 800 people took part, creating a wave of blue across the Heath and raising over £25000 for Teenage Cancer Trust in the process. The event is made possible thanks to the generous support of Royston businesses, which means that all entry fees and sponsorship raised goes direct to the charity. Join in the fun on 23rd June, more info www.roystoninblue.co.uk

Look out too for the fetes and markets throughout the villages: Melbourn, Barkway, Therfield and Orwell have organised traditional events including an Open Gardens, with activities and fun for all.

Meldreth Local History Group’s latest project will begin in earnest this month, when ten test pits are dug at various locations around the village on the weekend of 8th and 9th June. Over 40 volunteers will be involved each day. MLHG has received an Heritage Lottery Fund All Our Stories grant to finance the project, which it hopes will reveal information about how the village developed and evolved.

The Group is working closely with Cambridge University’s Cambridge Community Heritage (CCH) team and Dr Carenza Lewis, head of CCH and former Time Team presenter, has already made several visits to the village in connection with the project.

Several of the pits will be open to the public, so please come along and have a look at what we are digging up! Locations will be published on our website, www.meldrethhistory.org.uk, closer to the time but will include pits at the British Queen, Flambards Close, Fieldgate Nurseries and Chiswick End. Just look out for the blue and white balloons around the village which will mark our public digs, or speak to one of our volunteers that weekend. More test pits will be dug on 6th/7th July and 17th/18th August.

For more information visit www.meldrethhistory.org.uk or contact Kathryn Betts on (01763) 268428 or email [email protected].

Local online business So Gifted has moved to new premises on Highfields Business Park, just off the A1198 in Kneesworth, and is proud to launch its So Quick Counter Collection service.

Nici Martin launched gift and homewares company So Gifted.co.uk online in 2003, when she and friends struggled to find good quality, fun and educational toys for their small children. The site offers a wealth of unique gifts for all budgets and all occasions.

Since then, the business has grown phenomenally, launching sister sites SoGiftedEducation.co.uk which provides inspirational teaching and learning aids to schools and nurseries, and MyGreenWellies.co.uk, jam-packed full of new and innovative products for the experienced or novice gardener.

The new premises mean that local customers can place orders online and opt to collect their orders free of charge from Highfields Business Park. So Quick Counter Collection is available 10am-5pm Monday to Friday, with orders placed before 3pm ready to collect that same day.

In addition, So Gifted is offering a fulfillment service to other local businesses. Perhaps you run an online shop but are struggling to fulfill the orders from home? Or your time is spent packing up and sending brochures and mailings? One such company that So Gifted fulfill orders for is ThisHealth.com, a Super Foods, enzymes, vitamins and oils retailer which offers superior quality products at an affordable price. Taking advantage of So Gifted’s great courier and Royal Mail networks could be a cost effective solution for your business. To find out more visit • www.sogifted.co.uk • www.sogiftededucation.co.uk • www.mygreenwellies.co.ukYou can speak to Nici Martin by calling 01763 241111So Gifted, Unit 4a, Highfields Business Park, Old North Road, Kneesworth, Herts SG8 5JT

Meet-in Melbourn is a new networking initiative in Melbourn to bring people together who perhaps have just moved in to the village or who want to make new friends and acquaintances with a view to arranging social events such as visits to the cinema and theatre, dining out, walks or just

meeting regularly in the local. Meetings are monthly, rotated around the pubs in the village. Already there has been a team at a local quiz night and a meal out.

CATalyst volunteers have started recording the working life stories of older residents in Melbourn. This is for the WISEArchive digital project. If you have a story to tell or would like to be involved with the interviewing please DO contact us.

By the time you are reading this article the first community car boot sale organised by CATalyst will have been held at Melbourn Village College and there are more to come. Look out for posters around the village and on the CATalyst webpage. CATalyst is grateful to MVC for use of the school grounds.

Also, in partnership with stART, CATalyst will have supported a two day Creative Volunteering initiative to encourage volunteers to build on and explore their own creativity. The volunteers then have the opportunity to use their skills in organising creative activity sessions in community settings.

Please look out for the CATalyst red gazebo at the Melbourn village fete on Saturday 29th June. Come along and find out what volunteer-ing opportunities are on offer and try your luck at the tombola. CATalyst would like to thank the Village Fete Committee for their recent kind donation.

CATalyst is always encouraging more people to volunteer locally and especially to become members of the Committee. In particular the Committee needs representatives from younger people, those who have experi-ence of disabilities, a fund raiser/bid writer and an events organiser.

If you are interested and want to find out more please contact us either by email at: [email protected] or phone CATalyst on: 0774 953 0112

Meet-in Melbourn is a new networking initiative to bring people together who perhaps have just moved in to the village or who want to make new friends and acquaintances with a view to arranging social events such as visits to the cinema and theatre, dining out, walks or just meeting regularly in the local. Meetings are monthly, rotated around the pubs in the village. Already there has been a team at a local quiz night and a meal out. Look out for posters in the village or check the dates on the CATalyst webpage.

A SPECIALLY composed piece of music is to be performed at a Royston Arts Festival Occasional Event concert this June.

The talented pianists, the Cann Twins, will include the work in a concert at the Royston Parish Church on Friday 28 June.

The work, The Gaudete Suite, was written by Michael Elliott to commemorate the 850th anniversary of the building of the Augustinian Priory in Royston.

Other works to be included in the concert will be by Mozart, Liszt, Bizet and George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

The concert will be supporting cHALLenge, the group raising cash to provide a parish hall. Claire and Antoinette Cann said, “We’re delighted that the concert is supporting cHALLenge as the new Parish Hall will be a wonderful facility for the whole community.”

The Cann Twins have travelled the world giving recitals and the Doha Times describes their performance as ‘world class’.

Tickets cost £10 (£8 concessions) and £5 (under-19 and student) and are available online at www.roystonartsfestival.org or Julia Garfit on 01763 242137.This year’s Royston Arts Festival will run from September 21 – September 29.

If you would like to volunteer during the Festival, please contact Tina Filby at [email protected]

Formed in 2009, Meldreth Monday Art Group currently has 11 members - 6 men and 5 women. We meet informally, usually fort-nightly, at Meldreth Church Hall. In the good weather and summer time we may sometimes meet at an outdoor location. Casual group visits to London Art Galleries have also been arranged.

Members paint a wide variety of subjects, in whatever medium they choose, watercol-our and acrylic being the most popular. The group includes some experienced artists and some relative beginners. We paint in a friendly atmosphere encouraging each other and com-menting constructively on each other’s work.

There are no membership fees and no com-mittee. The cost of hall hire is shared equally between us. Meldreth Monday Art Exhibition, until 20th July, Royston and District Museum

THEBRiTiSHREDCROSSiNHERTfORDSHiREThe British Red Cross is well-known

for its work bringing aid and relief to the scenes of disasters and conflicts around the world. Less well-known is the range of community services provided by Red Cross volunteers across the UK. Led by trained volunteers, the charity works to help people prepare for and deal with crisis every day here in Hertfordshire. Some of the local services include:Health and social care

Red Cross volunteers are on hand to pro-vide short-term care in the home for adults who need help or reassurance to get back to their normal routine after a hospital stay, or after disruption due to crises such as illness, bereavement, or breakdown.

Volunteers are trained to help with a wide range of needs, including transport to and from medical appointments, prescription collection, help with shopping, meal preparation or light housework, visits to family and friends and assistance with keeping up hobbies or social ac-tivities, or even finding new ones. This service gets people back on their feet, and can even help them avoid being readmitted to hospital.

The Red Cross also runs a medical equipment loan service, which hires out wheelchairs and offers short-term loans of equipment like backrests, bath seats, walking sticks and frames, commodes, bedpans and urinals.Emergency response

Red Cross emergency response teams can be called out any time of the day or night to the scene of a fire, or another crisis such as an evacuation, industrial accident or flood. They offer comfort and practical help to the victims of the incident, often with the help of a Fire and Emergency Support Service (FESS) vehicle, which is equipped with a shower, spare clothes, blankets, hygiene packs, food and drink, first aid kits and other emergency supplies. Volunteers may support people who suddenly find themselves in crisis by helping to arrange temporary accommodation, advising them on other organisations and agencies which can help, and providing emotional support to help them cope.First aid

The Red Cross wants everyone to learn life-saving skills so that they are prepared when emer-gency strikes. It runs a range of first aid training courses which can be tailored to meet the needs of different groups, and also offers first aid tips through its website and a mobile app.

As well as first aid training, the Red Cross provides skilled and equipped first aid volunteers for public events. Red Cross Week

Annually, the Red Cross holds a week of fundraising and awareness-raising activity based around public collections and local events, between 5th and 11th May. Events can still be held throughout May and June to count towards the Red Cross Week. Our Hertfordshire branch hopes local communities will be interested in donating or holding a fundraising event that will support their local area. Remember, if you live in Hertfordshire, monies you raise will benefit those who live in Hertfordshire. To see full list of events visit: www.redcross.org.uk .For more information and ideas please see www.redcross.org.uk/redcrossweek or contact Hertfordshire senior community fundraiser, Cathy Curtis, on 01992 585969 / [email protected] . paLazzORECipEOfTHEMONTH:iNSaLaTaTRiCOLOREThis week Italy celebrates Festa Della Repubblica, the remembrance day by which the nation gained independence by voting out the monarchy after the fall of Fascism in 1946. The day is celebrated with food and wine festivals in the patriotic red, white and green colors of Italy, such as the classic Insalata Tricolore...

Ingredients• 2 avocados• 200g smoked salmon• Tin of beetroot in own juices• 1 lemon• 250g cream cheese• Seasoning

Method1. Open the beetroot and reserve the beetroot pieces for another day. Soak the smoked salmon in beetroot juice for 30mins then drain off.2. Meanwhile prepare the avocado. Slice in half lengthways and pull the two halves apart. Using a spoon gently pluck out the stone and place the avocado flat side down on a chopping board.3. From the top of the avocado make slices across approximately half a centimeter thick so that you end up with roughly eight short “C” shaped pieces.4. Run a piece of lemon around the inside of a medium sized ramekin and arrange the avocado into the bottom to make a flat covered surface. The lemon will stop the avocado from going brown.5. Next mix the cream cheese in a bowl with a pinch of salt and cracked pepper and a slight squeeze of lemon juice.6. Add a layer of the cream cheese mixture on top of the avocado in the ramekin about 1cm in thick-ness.7. Top the cream cheese mixture with the beetroot-infused salmon to make the third layer, then cover and refrigerate for 10 minutes to set.8. When you are ready to serve the dish run a warm knife around the inside of the ramekin and turn out on a plate, and complement with slices of beef tomato, sliced buffalo mozzarella and sprigs of basil topped with olive oil.A truly colorful dish! Buon Appetito!

Wimbledon is almost here so break out the Pimm’s, sunshine and strawberries and cream!Pimm’s is a fantastic liqueur and far too versatile to be enjoyed exclusively in one cocktail, so here are a couple of variations as well as the original Pimm’s and lemonade... After all it has been almost twelve months since we have seen the sun!

Pimm’s & LemonadeTake a tall glass filled with ice and add 1/3 Pimms, 2/3 lemonade with some mint, a slice of cucumber, some orange and a couple of strawberries.

Pimm’s & GingerTake a tall glass filled with ice and add 1/3 Pimm’s, 2/3 Ginger Ale, a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint

Pimm’s RoyalIn a Champagne Flute add 25mls of Pimm’s then top up with Prosecco and garnish with a strawberry

Pimm’s DueceTake a tall ice filled glass and add 1/3 Pimms, 1/3 orange juice and 1/3 cranberry juice then garnish with a strawberry and slice of orange.

Good luck Andy Murray... Bottoms up!

NEWfiTNESSSESSiONSfORpaRENTSMums and dads of under-fives are being encouraged to come

along to new, sociable fitness sessions in Royston. The ‘Buggycise’ sessions are aimed at parents of babies and

toddlers who would enjoy spending an hour a week with like-mind-ed people, getting fit alongside their little ones. Based outdoors, mums or dads can get their exercise without the need for a babysit-ter while the children get some healthy fresh air.

Organised by NHDC, which supports the sessions in partner-ship with Royston and Villages Children’s Centre, they take place every Wednesday morning from 9.30am to 10.30am on Therfield Heath until 17th July.

Sessions include aerobic and resistance exercise as well as activities to enhance core strength and posture, all tailored to each individual’s abilities. Parents with children under five are welcome and there is no need to book in advance. The first session is free, £2.50 a week thereafter. Buggies are not compulsory!

Royston & Villages Children’s Centre Manager, Mandy Dockery, added: ”These classes have been very popular with our parents, as they are fun, friendly and for all types of fitness levels. Parents have said they feel fitter, have made new friends and had a lot of fun!”

WONDERfULWEBSiTESTHaTWORkWebsites are really important these days – no self-respecting company

should be without one. But before you rush out, chequebook in hand to commission something fantastic, consider for a moment what your site needs to do.

Who’s it for? Your site must be focussed towards one particular group of customers – if your business serves more than one market, you may want to consider multiple websites.

What should it say? Most people will visit your site to solve a problem, or answer a question – do you know which problems and which questions?

Obviously your site needs to be well written so that visitors get what they went there to find – and get it quickly! Also it should be written from your customers’ perspective, not yours. Don’t start sentences with ‘We will deliver...’, instead, think of the benefits your customers get working with you and start your sentences with ‘You will receive...’ And for every page, ask what is the one thought you want your visitors to take away.

But all this matters little if your website can’t be found – so your site must be search engine-friendly too. Luckily, Google recognises that customers like well written, well-targeted popular sites and prioritises them accordingly, so put most of your effort into that.

Links back to your site from social media platforms will also boost your rankings, as will the inclusion of video (don’t forget that Google owns YouTube), although the video needs to be as targeted and focussed as your words and contain really useful content to keep visitors coming back for more.

To make sure your efforts aren’t wasted, all your online marketing must be integrated together to make sure it delivers the right message to the right audience at the right time. Just like it says in your overall marketing plan – you do have one of those, don’t you?

In the garden... JuneThe garden is really alive with activity now and summer is coming. Many shrubs are working

hard to give a good performance. A very under rated late spring specimen is Choisya ternata commonly known as the Mexican orange blossom. It produces fragrant, star shaped white flowers and has aromatic foliage. It is good value because it is evergreen and will grow in fertile well drained soil, preferably in sun. I like to use Choisya ‘aztec Pearl’ in my garden designs because it is more compact and has darker, narrower leaves. Choisya does also have a second flush of flowers in late summer and early autumn.

Philadelphus ‘belle etoile’ the Mock orange is a pretty early summer flowering deciduous shrub. It produces very fragrant, white cup shaped flowers and will grow in average garden soil in full sun or partial shade. It is realatively small in habit for a philadelphus at around 1.2 metres in height and 2.4metres in width. If you have the space Philadelphus ‘beauclerk’ or Philadelphus ‘Virginal’ are lovely larger examples of this genus.

One of my favourite shrubs at this time of year is Kolkwitzia amabilis’Pink Cloud’ commonly known as the Beauty bush. It is an arching, deciduous shrub that produces masses of bell shaped pink flowers. It will thrive in well drained fertile soil in full sun, but can tolerate a little shade. It will become a large shrub at around 3metres high by 4 metres wide. Well worth considering if you have a larger garden.

NaTiONaLTHEaTRECONNECTiONSThis year Meridian Performing Arts Depart-

ment took part in the National Theatre Connections project for the first time. We performed a new play written for the project called ‘What Are They Like?’ by Lucinda Coxon. 12 students from Years 10-13 took on performance and technical roles and have been rehearsing for the project since December.

After 3 successful performances at Meridian in March, we were given the opportunity to perform in a Connections Festival at The Royal and Derngate Theatre in Northampton recently. It was a fantastic opportunity to perform in a professional venue and meet members of other companies similar to ours. We participated in the festival over two days, where we were able to take part in a clowning workshop, help create art work based on our perform-ance and watch two other plays at the theatre.

“The festival was great fun. The cast’s hard work paid off, resulting in a mature and confident performance. Well done to all involved”, said Cathy Harrison, Performing Arts Department.

Bugs and beasties are really thriving in this warmer weather, so just how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year? Aphids

Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and can transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed incredibly rapidly, so regular control is necessary.• Check plants regularly and either spray with a suitable insecticide or a soap or plant oil based insecticide • Use biological controls – they’re totally safe for all other creatures and of course leave no residues• Use a strong jet of water to blast the aphids off plants, but do a thorough job or else they will soon be back up and causing damageCaterpillarsCaterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through your plants and perhaps even into your vegetables.• Hand pick the pest where possible and either squash or place on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or very early in the morning.• Spray with a suitable contact insecticide or better still use the Nemasys Caterpillar biological control. • Some caterpillars, in particular the Tortrix Moth produce quantities of fine webbing which they use to bind leaves or other plant parts together to create particularly safe shel-ters for themselves. It’s hard for a pesticide to actually reach them so hand picking or squashing is often the best answer.• Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops such as calabrese, broccoli and other brassicas with Envirofleece or Enviromesh. Woodlice

Woodlice often cause a lot of concern, however these little creatures are rarely responsible as they simply do not have ad-equately strong mouthparts. They can cause damage to soft new growth or occasionally to soft-fleshed fruits such as strawberries but can’t tackle tougher plant growth. You may see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and pre-sume that they have caused the initial

damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures.Earwigs

Earwigs can cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they nibble out large quantities of petal or occasionally leaf. Try trapping them using an inverted flower-pot on top of a bamboo cane. The bamboo cane and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can them simply be emptied out on a regular basis.Mildew

Powdery mildew is also a problem at this time of year; it coats plant leaves, stems, buds and sometimes even petals with a white floury deposit. Sometimes the mildew can also prevent fruits from swelling normally, cause the leaves to become distorted and even fall early. Prompt action is essential and if you wish you can use a proprietary fungicide but check the label carefully for suitability.

Keep the damage to a minimum in the first instance by ensuring that the plants are kept well watered. In addition try to ensure a good flow of air around the plants. A bit of careful pruning or weeding often helps too.

ROySTONCaVEDVDA new DVD has been produced on Royston Cave which

presents a number of theories on the origins and use of the Cave.A launch evening held last month saw the town mayor and

a number of councillors attending, along with members of the public and the History Society.

Sylvia Beamon and Peter Houldcroft, both well known ‘Cave authors’ were there to answer questions about their theories on the origins and use of the Cave and Tobit Curteis, the Cave conservator was on hand to explain the conservation programme. Richard Whitmore, former BBC newscaster, who did the voice over for the DVD also spoke about his involvement in local history projects in Hertfordshire.

All in all around a hundred people attended. The showing of the new cave DVD was very well received. The DVD is

on sale at the Museum and via Amazon. Simply seach online for Royston Cave DVD.The Cave is open from Easter to September every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday from 2.30 to 5.00 (last entry 4.30).
