MANAGEMENT RESTRUCTUREFollowing an internal review of GA’s management andadministration, three key departments were established.Staff Managers appointed to these areas were MattConnell (Business), Jenny Collins (Development) andKaren Myers (Sport).

SPORTInternationalAustralian Gymnasts competed in excess of 30 majorinternational events across six Gymsports.

In addition to the Commonwealth Games Women’s teamgold, outstanding individual efforts also produced goldmedals for Philippe Rizzo (3), Allana Slater (2) andnewcomer Sarah Lauren (1). In all, our medal tally inManchester (achieved in the absence of RhythmicGymnastics) was 6 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze.

Strong and consistent performances by Philippe Rizzo,Allana Slater and Jacqui Dunn on the World Cup circuitqualified them for the prestigious World Cup final inNovember against the world’s best, where Philippe wonsilver on the high bar, Jacqui silver on the uneven barsand Allana, bronze on the floor.

Other outstanding performances included Lauren Farry(Sport Aerobics) in winning the individual womens ANACWorld Championships, and Sports Acrobatics trio ElenaArmenis, Tara Busbridge and Veronica Gravolin finishing4th in the Sports Acro World Championships –outstanding results for two of our non Olympic sportswhich have limited financial support.

Our Rhythmic Gymnastics Team competed successfullyin England in a pre-Commonwealth Games competition, finishing 2nd and our leading Rhythmic athletes havepursued other international competition opportunitiesthroughout the year.

Our trampoline athletes also competed in internationalevents in Canada and the USA and conducted a highlysuccessful International Challenge at the Gold Coast inJuly.

NationalFourteen national events were successfully conductedand national champions are noted elsewhere in thisreport.

Cheerleading officially became part of GeneralGymnastics with the establishment of a nationalprogram, accredited coaching courses and a nationalchampionship. Over 400 competitors took part in thefirst event and judging by the interest generated, thenumber of participants will rise dramatically over thenext two years.

Australia’s leading gymnasts built on their growing international reputation, highlighted bythe Women’s team gold and individual medals in Manchester, while GA completed a fullnational competition program across all Gymsports, increased membership, introducedadministrative improvements, undertook a major business initiative with the Great ChinaCircus and strengthened its award winning Club 10 program in partnership with the ASC.

High Performance ProgramsOur international performance is a direct consequenceof the world-class programs and commitment of thoseresponsible for, and participating in, our highperformance network at the AIS, VIS, WAIS, QAS andNSWIS. We continue to work closely with our partnersin these programs to ensure that the considerablefinancial commitment is put to the best use and thatour athletes gain the maximum advantage from theseprograms.

Sport Management CommitteesSeven Sports Management Committees comprisingdedicated volunteers with valuable technicalknowledge, supported by a network of ProgramManagers employed by GA, continued to provide activeand expert leadership and direction of their respectivegym sports. The SMCs’ structure, now firmly in place, continues to provide an excellent system ofmanagement of our multi-disciplinary sport.

DEVELOPMENTJenny Collins’ department continued to deliver qualityprograms and services for our State Associations andaffiliated clubs.

Phase two of the Club 10 Accreditation program wascompleted. Over 60 clubs helped trial the program inreadiness for the national launch in 2003. Nationalservice standards were developed for affiliated clubs. For the second year in a row we were honoured toreceive national recognition for this program in winningthe ASC/Ausport National Sporting Organisation –Community Sport Award.

Education remains a priority and work continues to bedone to ensure quality courses and resources areavailable to GA’s Registered Training Providers, nowexpanded to include some non-traditional providerswho are able to meet the required standards.

BUSINESSFocus was on new business opportunities, e-businesssolutions and membership issues.

GA’s new website was prepared in-house by MattConnell and has become a major communication toolfor GA. The website not only showcases our sport butkeeps members updated and informed.

Membership grew by 8%. Membership data collectionwas refined and “flat fee” registration is provingsuccessful. We also had some success in managingthe impact on clubs of the public liability blow out, through our National Insurance Program.

FIGGA continued to actively support our InternationalGymnastics Federation (FIG) by representation on theFIG Council (Murray Chessell), WAG TechnicalCommittee (Kym Dowdell) and General GymnasticsCommittee (Jenny Collins). GA had much pleasure inhosting an FIG General Gymnastics Committee Meetingin Melbourne in February.

2005 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPSGA was delighted to secure from the FIG, the rights toconduct the World Artistic Gymnastics Championshipsin Melbourne 2005, following significant financialsupport and encouragement from the VictorianGovernment through its Victorian Major EventsCorporation.

This event is expected to provide a substantial boostfor the sport in Australia and an excellent businessopportunity for the Federation particularly given itsprogramming in the lead up to the 2006Commonwealth Games.

BOARD AND GOVERNANCEThere were six board meetings throughout the year.An executive committee and other committees ensuredthat board operations were closely aligned to corporategovernance standards.

Graham Carey (QLD) retired from the Board in Octoberwith the appreciation of GA after more than two yearsof service. He was replaced by Grant Harrison, Presidentof GKSA, who brought marketing and business skillsas well as gymnastic experience to the position.

A National Planning Conference attended by StatePresidents, State Directors, GA Board Members andManagement staff, was conducted in Melbourne inOctober. Professor David Shilbury was the key-notespeaker with the focus of the Conference being theco-ordination of our national/state managementstructures and service delivery systems.

FINANCESGA incurred losses of $165,320.85 for the calenderyear 2002 against a budgeted deficit of $57,668.

This was despite significant savings and surpluses inprojects and events.

Significant and disappointing losses ($214,328)however resulted from a joint venture project withCircusco International Pty Ltd for the promotion of atour by the Great China Circus and Australiangymnasts (see details elsewhere in this report). Theselosses were covered from reserves and did not impacton current or proposed projects or operations.

GA remains reliant on the Australian SportsCommission for the funding of its developmentprojects and High Performance Programs. We are alsoindebted to the AOC and ACGA for their assistancein the preparation of our athletes for the Olympicsand Commonwealth Games. The involvement of ourkey partners is presented in detail following this report.

Craig Otto’s “Acromat” continued its invaluablesponsorship with both direct financial support and theprovision of first class equipment at our nationalevents. The support of GK Leotards for our NationalTeams was also of importance.

Considerable time and effort was devoted tomarketing. Sporting Frontiers Ltd was contracted inan unsuccessful attempt to develop other significantsponsorship of the sport. This area remains the majorchallenge for GA.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTSGymnastics Australia continued to enjoy theenthusiastic support of its state associations, clubs, members and thousands of volunteers throughout theyear.

Finally we would like to acknowledge the dedicationand commitment of our colleagues on the GA Boardand National Office staff who managed a successfulyear marred only by the painful financial outcome ofthe Great China Circus venture.

In November 2001 some of Australia’s top gymnasts “joined the circus” andtoured the east coast with the world’s leading circus performers from the GreatChina Circus in a production called, Evolution – The History of Circus andGymnastics.

The “stars” including Ji Wallace, Lisa Skinner, Damian Istria, Danielle LeRay andLauren Farry enjoyed every minute of the three week tour. The synergies betweengymnastics and circus were obvious and our athletes readily fitted into theprofessional environment of the circus production.

Showcasing our sport as entertainment, and providing professional opportunitiesfor our athletes is an important part of the GA business plan.

After a careful analysis of an attractive proposal presented by Circusco InternationalPty Ltd, (whose principals came from within the gymnastic community, and whohad previously represented the Great China Circus in Australia and New Zealand),the board approved investment in the project on a joint venture basis.

A joint venture company was established, a professional production team wasassembled and major venues in each of the eastern state capitals includingCanberra and Newcastle, were secured.

The athletes named above, together with Peter Maamary and Rhiannon Jones, ayoung sports acrobatic team from Sydney, did an outstanding job, and AcrobaticsFunatics (QLD), Gosford Gymnastics (NSW), AIS Gymnastics (ACT) and PITGymnastics (VIC), provided much appreciated local support in the performances.

Although ticket sales were professionally promoted through television, independent publicists and press advertising, sales fell far short of the targetresulting in a disappointing financial outcome for GA and its partner.

This was not our first attempt at showcasing gymnastics as entertainment, but itwas certainly the most ambitious and professional such venture ever attemptedby GA. Although we incurred losses, this major undertaking provides us withinvaluable experience for future ventures.

Business Report

Matthew ConnellBusiness

Manager

2002 saw a change in the management and administration of key work departmentswithin Gymnastics Australia. A clear delineation was made between the areas ofDevelopment, Sport and Business. This report focuses on the Business arm of GymnasticsAustralia and takes into account the following areas:-

EVENTSWhilst specific events will be covered in more detailunder the Sport department of this report, it shouldbe highlighted the work undertaken by GymnasticsAustralia within the Events area.

Headed by Shaun Doyle, Gymnastics Australiacontinues to maintain a busy schedule of eventsincluding National Championships for eachcompetitive Gymsport, an Aussie GymFest forGeneral Gymnastics (held every two years) as wellas National Club Championships and Internationalevents.

The management and administration of Nationalevents is a key role of Gymnastics Australia andprovides a necessary and essential component ofeach Gymsport. For a complete listing of all eventsundertaken throughout 2002, please see the Sportsection of this Annual report.

The events undertaken by Gymnastics Australiaare the culmination of much hard work andplanning by the Gymnastics Australia Events team. This includes Shaun Doyle, Russell Smart,GymSport Program Directors, their Committees,State Associations local clubs, volunteers andorganising committees. Thanks are extended toall, including the ongoing volunteer support ofGeorge Tatai and Steve Chetkovich.

MERCHANDISEGymnastics Australia continues to market and sellresources specific to the Gymnastics community. This includes a range of technical and club basedresources such as manuals, videos, teaching aids,as well as apparel for teams and the public, stationary items and well as books and otherpromotional items.

In 2002, Gymnastics Australia began tracking salesof merchandise through the iMIS program. Thisenables the recording of sales against membersand allows the review of items and their salesfigures. The use of the iMIS program in processingsales is also ensuring a more customer focusedapproach is taken to the sale of GymnasticsAustralia merchandise.

Gymnastics Australia’s entire range of merchandisewas also publicised via the website in 2002.Investigations have begun to establish e-commercevia the website in order to allow customers topurchase merchandise items “on-line”. Thanks areextended to Suimai Hare (Merchandise Officer) forher work in this area.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYOne of the key challenges facing GymnasticsAustralia is the ability to capitalize upon

advancements in Information Technology to delivertangible benefits to the sport.

A key objective of Gymnastics Australia is to providebetter communication to its members and thegeneral public and to this end, two major tasks in2002 have been the continued development of theMembership Database (iMIS) and theredevelopment of the Gymnastics Australiawebsite.

The divergence of these two essential tools, willensure Gymnastics Australia and the sport ingeneral is keeping pace with the InformationTechnology area and providing better service tomembers.

In July 2002, Gymnastics Australia released its newwebsite (www.gymnastics.org.au). This was theresult of six months of work and allowed the sportto be presented to the public as a unified bodyencompassing all seven Gymsports. The site ismaintained and managed on site by GymnasticsAustralia staff, with valuable input from selectedmembers of the National Sport ManagementCommittees. Whilst the site continues to developon a monthly basis, it is essential that the site andthe database continue to interact in order toprovide the information required by members andeffect more efficient processes includingmembership renewal and club search capabilities.

In order to effect better communication,Gymnastics Australia instigated a weekly “LatestNews” e-mail service to Technical members, Clubsand personnel involved in the sport. This initiativehas received praise from the community and willcontinue to be developed throughout 2003.

Substantial work was also undertaken throughout2002 on a new Membership card for athletes andtechnical members. Work began in May 2002 onthe concept of a CD-Membership card for our 2003members. The card allows the sport to be promotedvia multi-media content, including; video clips, athlete interviews, computer wallpapers, whilst alsoproviding competition opportunities and links tokey partners within the Gymnastic community.

The development of the CD-Membership card willbe trialed throughout 2003 and closely monitoredby Gymnastics Australia. Thanks are extended tothe Australian Sports Commission for their supportof the CD-Membership card concept.

TARGETED PARTICIPATION GROWTHPROGRAMUnder the direction of the Australian SportsCommission (ASC), Gymnastics Australia launched

7

Page 10: List of Office Bearers€¦ · program, accredited coaching courses and a national championship. ... Focus was on new business opportunities, e-business solutions and membership issues

Australian Gymnastic Federation

two new “business - participation” initiatives in2002. With an aim to substantially increaseparticipation and attract increased clubmembership, the ASC invited National SportingOrganisations to apply for financial support to growtheir sport.

Gymnastics Australia developed two businessproposals and submitted these to the ASC forconsideration; they were AEROSkools, a grass rootsSport Aerobics participation program aimed atschools/clubs culminating in event opportunities ata State and National level and GYMSkools, a feefor service Gymnastics program operated by anexternal provider (KidSkills Australia), aimed atprimary schools.

Considerable work was undertaken in the early partof 2002 in establishing both programs andlaunching them in target areas, throughoutAustralia. The future success of these programs, will rely on continued focus and energy to drawgreater participation in both programs as well asexploring the opportunities for attracting theseparticipants to the club environment.

Thanks are extended to our National Co-ordinatorsof these Programs; Karon Williams (NationalAEROSkools Co-ordinator) and Linda Pettit (NationalGYMSkools Co-ordinator) for their hard work inestablishing these programs along with the KidSkillsAustralia staff and appointed State AEROSkools co-ordinators.

MEMBERSHIPGymnastics Australia continued to grow inmembership throughout 2002. Our threemembership categories are Athlete, Technical andClub and all showed an increase in numbers in2002. This is a positive sign, especially in the areaof Technical Membership where an alarming trendof negative growth had been prevalent for the pastthree years.

In an effort to streamline the process of membershipapplication and renewal, Gymnastics Australiaworked with its State Associations to processTechnical Membership renewals direct to theNational Office in 2002. This relieved StateAssociations of extra workload early in thecompetition year and allowed them to focus onthe processing of Athlete membership and theservicing of their Club affiliates.

In order to cope with the increased workload,Gymnastics Australia employed a full timeMembership Services Officer (Danni Hanna) tohandle the processing of all Technical membershipsand work alongside Shaun Doyle in our Membershipdepartment.

Our Membership database (iMIS) continued toreceive attention in 2002, with a variety of upgrades

to both the desktop client (used by GymnasticsAustralia and its State Associations) and well asthe Web Browser version used by affiliated clubs. It is clear that the work that has been undertakenover the past 5 years is starting to pay dividendswith our Membership database playing a pivotalrole across key departmental areas.

It is pleasing to note that a growing number ofaffiliated clubs have invested in both the ClubDatabase program or the Gymnastics On-Linesystem in order to register their athletes. This willbecome increasingly important in future years asthe sport undergoes rapid development in theInformation Technology area. Clubs willing toinvest in new systems and processes will find theresults rewarding. Gymnastics Australia willcontinue to assist clubs in making the transitionto new systems through its Club 10 program.

Furthermore, Gymnastics Australia assisted thoseclubs willing to invest in the Club Databaseprogram or Gymnastics On-Line by providing atrial Club IT Helpdesk. The Helpdesk allows clubsaccess to phone support for computer relatedissues or membership database queries. As thenumber of clubs accessing computer drivenmembership systems increases, the need toprovide adequate training and support will beparamount to continued membership growth.

Thanks are extended to Shaun Doyle, DanniHanna and Ben Kerswill (our Membership Team)for their continued growth of the Membershipdepartment. Acknowledgement is also made ofGymnastics NSW and Helen Colaguiri for theirwillingness to assist Gymnastics Australia intrialing membership processes. With theassistance of the Club 10 trialists and Club 10Officers, the Membership area continues tounderpin the organization and provideadvancements to the sport in general.

Business Report

8

CONCLUSIONIn summary the Business area of GymnasticsAustralia has contributed greatly to theconsolidation of sport throughout 2002. With arenewed focus on the Information Technologyarea in 2003 and beyond and a key objective toprovide better service and benefit to ourmembership, the Business arm of GymnasticsAustralia will be well prepared to capitalize uponfuture growth initiatives.

Development Report

Jenny CollinsDevelopment

Manager

2002 was an extremely busy and rewarding year for the Development Unit, which includesthe two key areas of Education and Club 10. This year concluded with Gymnastics Australiataking out, for the Club 10 Project, the National Sporting Organisation – Community SportAward for the 2002 Ausport Awards. This national acknowledgment was fantastic recognitionfor all who have been involved in the Club 10 pilot. Following is a summary report on theactivities undertaken within the areas of Club 10 and Education.

CLUB 10Following a detailed evaluation of the pilot carriedout throughout 2001, which confirmed theproject’s success, the Club 10 project was continuedinto a 2nd phase pilot for 2002. This involvedexpanding the pilot to incorporate a larger numberof affiliated clubs. The work undertaken by the 29pilot clubs in the previous year could again betrialed in anticipation of releasing the scheme toall affiliated clubs in 2003. The Phase 2 pilot hadtwo key components:-

· New pilot clubs (40 in total acrossAustralia) responsible for trialing schemeas new entry clubs. This included allcomponents such as;

:affiliation and entry into Club 10scheme procedures: revised Club 10 QualityImprovement checklist: Accreditation application and auditprocedures

· Phase 1 clubs – 29 in total across AustraliaDue to involvement in the schemethroughout the previous year, these clubswere accredited into the 5 categories andwere responsible for trialing thebenefits scheme associated with Club10. In addition annual renewal procedureswere also trialed.

As well as expanding the number of clubs involvedin the scheme a number of State Associations alsoappointed a Club 10 Officer within their staffingteam to be responsible for the Phase 2 pilot. TheClub 10 Officers network consisted of 10 staff, across Australia, who worked directly with the 69clubs involved in the pilot.

A key outcome of the Phase 2 pilot was theadoption of a national club affiliation process byall States. This important achievement included:-

· Adoption of affiliation standards &conditions across Australia, which alsoincluded minimum standards in regards toInsurance coverage

· Use of a consistent affiliation form; across allStates

· Administrative links to the Nationaldatabase program, iMIS to ensure thenewly developed “Club Search” facilitycould operate with correct contactinformation for each affiliated club

· Introduction of “Club 10 Briefingworkshops” as part of the club affiliationprocedures across Australia

Another key outcome coordinated as part of thePhase 2 pilot was the linking of the Club 10scheme to the Government’s Active AustraliaProvider network. This saw all gymnastic clubsachieving Star 3 or above accreditation also beingimmediately recognised and awarded with ActiveAustralia Provider status. Again, this recognitionprovided by the Australian Sports Commission, confirmed the importance and benefit of the Club10 framework in providing services to affiliatedclub members and a framework, whichencouraged clubs along a pathway of continuousimprovement.

Congratulations and thanks must be extended toevery club and Club 10 Officers involved in thePhase 2 pilot. The enormous amount of workundertaken throughout 2002 ensured that anexcellent operational framework, supportresources and benefits scheme was finalised forrelease to all affil iated clubs in 2003.Congratulations must also be extended to therepresentatives who form the Club 10 AdvisoryCommittee for their foresight and commitmentto ensuring implementation of Club 10 as thegymnastics club affiliation scheme.

EDUCATIONAnother key development area within the sportis Education. Linda Pettit joined the NationalDevelopment team staff, in a full time capacityfrom February 1st to coordinate this area.

2002 was an extremely busy year with the re-accreditation of the Federation’s six Level 1Coaching courses (MAG, WAG, RG, GG, AER, KIN)by the Australian Sport Commission’s (ASC)Education unit. In addition, two new Level 1courses (Trampoline and Cheerleading) were alsofinalised and submitted for Accreditation underthe ASC’s National Sport Accreditation Scheme.Accreditation of all courses was achieved and will

10

Page 13: List of Office Bearers€¦ · program, accredited coaching courses and a national championship. ... Focus was on new business opportunities, e-business solutions and membership issues

2002 Annual Report

be valid for another four year period. A Level 2Coaching Course for Trampoline Sports was alsoaccredited with the ASC during 2002.

Throughout the year a strong focus was on refiningadministrative procedures and operationalguidelines across the education area. Key activitiesincluded:-

· The processing of Technical Membershipsdirectly by the Federation

· Reviewing and expanding the CourseProviders Licence scheme so that otherProviders, external to State Associations couldbe recognised,

· Establishment of a course sanction processwhich utilises the iMIS database as anadministrative tool. This also enables the sportto produce an annual national calendar forcoaching courses/workshops and ensuresdetails are logged onto the database when aperson enters an education course.

· Establishment of a National Presenters teamto assist in the delivery of quality coursesacross Australia

All of the above activities were presented andconsidered at great length at the State Directorsmeetings to ensure co-ordination and unificationacross Australia. Thanks are also extended to bothVictoria and Queensland who actively trialed thecourse sanction procedures prior to their releaseto ensure a smoother implementation processcould occur.

In the later half of the year a special resourcedesign meeting was held to consider and assistin the development of a new updated coachingresource for the Level 1 Coaching courses now inplace. Development of the resource, to be titled

“Jump into Gymnastics” will be continuedthroughout 2003 with an anticipated release datein 2004. This resource will replace the Federation’svery popular ‘Introductory Gymnastics’, which isno longer in publication.

Congratulations are also extended to Tim Lees(QLD High Performance MAG Coach) who wasselected and represented the Federation as an“Expert” Presenter for the 1st FIG CoachingAcademy held in Malaysia in mid February.Gymnastics Australia was also invited by the FIGto present their Level 1 MAG and WAG coursesin Qatar in December. Special thanks areextended to both Tim Lees and Kate Debnam(QLD) who took on this task and travelled to Qatarto present the courses to over 50 participants.

IN CONCLUSIONThe Club 10 pilot has been extremely successfuland achieved all planned outcomes. The educationarea has seen enormous administrativeenhancements and is well positioned for thefuture. I wish to sincerely thank and congratulateall those involved from State Associations, Clubsand Gymnastics Australia’s staff team. I would liketo make special mention and acknowledge theenormous work and assistance given by theNational Development team, Nerine Cooper, BradEdwards and Linda Pettit, who have continued tobe enthusiastic and committed to improving alloperational areas regardless of the work load thatchange always brings. I am confident that thesport of Gymnastics will reap the rewards in yearsto come from the changes that have beenimplemented in 2002.

The team of Program Managers supporting theirrespective SMC’s includes the following personnel:

MAG - John CurtinWAG - Karen MyersRG - Danni PeersGG - Jenny CollinsAER - Matt ConnellTRP - Russell SmartACR - Russell Smart

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATIONA great deal was undertaken throughout 2002,to facilitate the standardisation and productionof a range of management and administrativetools aimed to assist each SMC with theiroperations. A consistent format was applied acrossall Gymsports, with regard to the followingoperational documents:

· National Selection Policies· National Technical Regulations· National Squad Handbooks· National Competition Handbooks· National High Performance Plans

It was the role of the Sport Manager to liaise andassist each Sport Program Manager to provideoperational tools that were required within theirsport as well as provide advice and support to theProgram Managers on daily administrationmatters.

A new Athlete Biography template was alsoestablished and utilised on the GA website. Thetemplate was used to record all National Squadathlete personal data and event results. Thetemplate was adopted and modifed for eachGymsport and used as a tool to collect and archivepertinent athlete data.

NATIONAL SQUADS AND TEAMSNational Team UniformBefore the establishment of the “Sport”department, each SMC created their own NationalTeam uniform which was not only confusing inthe community but also expensive and difficult tomaintain appropriate stock levels.

Under the direction of the Sport department, asingle National Team Uniform including tracksuits, polo fleeces, t/shirts, backpacks and jackets, hasbeen created, that services the needs of allgymsports. The establishment of a National TeamUniform Register has also allowed each Gymsport

With the establishment of the key work departments of Business, Development and Sport in2002, this created an ideal opportunity to co-ordinate the roles and responsibilities of theindividual Sport Program Managers under the “Sport” banner. This also ensured a supportsystem was established for members of the volunteer National Sport Management Committees(SMC).

to track the movement and fit out of all NationalTeam members and ensure stock levels aremaintained for all appropriate events.

National Tours and Training CampsThroughout the year Gymnastics Australiaconducts a large number of National TrainingCamps and overseas Tours. Relationships havebeen established with the GA Tour Operator andthe Australian Institute of Sport, where advice andexperience can be passed onto the ProgramManagers to assist them with their arrangements.

REPRESENTATIONThere are many occasions when GymnasticsAustralia is required to be present at conferencesor meetings on “Sport” matters where it isimpossible to have all Program Managers present.

It is the responsibility of the Sport Manager toattend these meetings and bring all the relevantinformation back to the respective ProgramManager.

Meetings attended during the year included:

- ASC Elite Program Reviews andWorkshops

- ASC Conferences- ASC Selection Policy Workshop- AOC Team Management Meetings

for Athens 2004.- AOC Section Manager Workshops- ACGA Briefing meetings for 2002

Commonwealth Games- ACGA Section Manager Workshops- ACGA “Target 2006” forum

The Sport Manager also acted as the point ofcontact for all ASDA matters ensuring the registerof athletes was maintained for drug testingpurposes and all Program Managers were fullyconversant with ASDA drug testing and educationprocedures.

CONCLUSIONThe seven sports within Gymnastics Australia areall supported by very committed National SportsManagement Committees. On behalf of allProgram Managers, thanks are extended to thesevolunteer members who give many hours of theirtime to the sport. Their technical expertise andwork are invaluable to the ongoing developmentof the Sport department.

Australian Judges Hall of Fame Inductees:John Hargreaves (TAS) and Kath Graham (ACT)

It is with regret that we note the passing of DavidAllan in October. Dave was the New ZealandNational Judging Coordinator, and has beeninstrumental in the development of men’sgymnastics in that country over the past decade.Dave was a good friend of many of the judgesand coaches in Australia, and both his presenceand good-natured humour will be sorely missed.

CONCLUSIONIn closing, I would like to thank once again theMAG Sports Management Committee and theirsub committees for their enormous efforts in2002. In particular John Curtin, in his role asNational Program Director, whose tireless effortsto coordinate the National Team and maintain astrong national program, is greatly appreciated.

Philippe Rizzo continues to be GymnasticAustralia’s most successful international gymnast. His talent and experience in the Senior NationalTeam will be needed to secure 2004 Olympic teamqualification at the 2003 World Championshipsin Los Angeles. I look forward to 2003 and thesuccesses it will bring.

Preparation for Commonwealth Games was the focus of 2002, culminating with the fantasticvictory for our team in Manchester.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONSThe first major International competition for the year was Pacific Alliance, which was held in Vancouver,Canada. Both our Senior and Junior teams placed second behind very strong teams from USA. As aforerunner to Commonwealth Games China came to Australia for a competition which was held inconjunction with Levels 4 – 6 National Clubs. Although the Chinese girls looked great at training theAustralian girls competed well and had a strong victory.World Championships in 2002 was an Individual Apparatus event and the competitions that Australiacompeted in both prior to and after Worlds were focused on individual results. Allana Slater andJacqui Dunn represented Australia at these events.

TRAINING CAMPSThese were held prior to Pacific Alliance andCommonwealth Games. As the other events wereIndividual events the gymnast’s preparation wasdone in their own programs with Peggy Liddickworking with the personal coaches.

SUB JUNIOR PROGRAM - 2001 andBeyondThis program continued to grow in 2002 . TheNational Coach travelled around Australia toensure that all gymnasts, coaches and judges bothknew and understood the routines. We are nowstarting to see the benefits to the gymnasts whohave worked through Stage 3 and are in Stage 4.

LEVELS 4-6 NATIONAL CLUBSAgain held at the AIS and hosted by GymnasticsACT. The numbers at this event increase everyyear as more States/Clubs become involved. Theinclusion of the Australia vs China Competitionallows many of our younger gymnasts and newercoaches to see international standard gymnasticsboth at training and in competition.

LEVELS 7-10 NATIONAL CLUBSThis was held in Sydney at a new venue on theNorthern Beaches. All agreed that this was a greatplace to hold the competition as trips to the beachcould be organised between competitions.Numbers at this event are declining – possiblybecause of the popularity of the Reach for theStars Competition at which clubs are able to bringtheir gymnasts from all Levels. The National SMCis looking at the possibility of combining the twoWAG National Clubs events into one competitionin 2004.The Apparatus Challenge was again held but witha new format. The top gymnasts on eachapparatus from the Level 9/10 Division wereselected to compete against the Junior Nationalgirls. It was pleasing to see that the medal winnersat this event came form both the Level 9/10 girlsand the Junior National girls.

REACH FOR THE STARSLEVELS 4-6 & 7-10The December program at the AIS is always busyand this competition provides both the WAG and

MAG clubs with a friendly competition at theconclusion of their year. Included in the 2002Reach for the Stars was the trial to select theAustralian team to compete at the AustralianYouth Olympics in January and the OpenChallenge. This popular competition gives theLevels, Junior National and International girls anopportunity to compete together.

USA LEVELS TOURThis team of six was selected from the level 9/10Division at National Clubs. Gymnasts whonominated and were selected were:

Felicity Hallam NSWAime Hawkins NSWJessica McIlwraith NSWHolli Lawler VICChloe Jackson QLDTaleah Reilly QLDCoaches:Daniel Benson NSWBelinda Wall QLD

PUBLICATIONSBoth the National Levels Manual and the Sub-Junior Manual were updated and reprinted.

JUDGINGSub-Junior Courses were held in most States toensure that States had the required number ofjudges to qualify their gymnasts for NationalChampionships. In December, in Canberra prior to the Reach forthe Stars competition, a National Levels Courseand a National Sub-Junior Course were run. Thisinitiative of holding judging courses in Decemberat the AIS will continue as the week of NationalChampionships is too busy to run any judgingcourses. The facilities at the AIS are ideal for thesecourses and conducting them prior to the eventallows judges the flexibility of coming only forthe course or combining their attendance at thecourse with either judging or coachingresponsibilities at Reach for the Stars.

2002 Annual Report

RhythmicGymnastics

We had anticipated that this year, 2002, would be one of consolidation, in respect to thetechnical direction received from the FIG Rhythmic Technical Committee. Quite to the contrary, between July 2001 – December 2002 we have been challenged with 14 FIG Errata that haveresulted in changes to the FIG Code. These continual adjustments and modifications havebeen unsettling to the Australian Rhythmic community, but it is our duty to ensure that thetechnical direction that we are commissioned to provide, is up to date with the World R.G.technical information. To say the least it has been extremely difficult for our Elite Coachesand Judges to prepare our potential 2003 World Championship team members for the Olympicqualification competition.

Development of a GroupCompetitive ProgramThe aim of the SMC is to provide a Group Programfor the school system that can be both user friendlyfor the schools and clubs. This program will addto the current schoolgirls schedule. This has been a major undertaking in respect thatour National Education Coordinator did not comeinto office until March 2002.

" Categories and Grades Technicalsupplement 2002-5 for the Nationalprogram Manual is completed andpublished.

" Key people have been identified for thesteering committee for the NationalSchool Girls event.

" Concept paper & regulations to be basedprincipally on the Independent SchoolGirls Competition. This format is presentlyvery strong in NSW and QLD – NicoleHigham is the NSW IGSSA R.G.Coordinator.

" Promotional brochure to be produced andbe distributed Nationally – Sept 2003.

" Target competition date 2004 September/Oct.

" Initial information to be distributed anddiscussed at Australian Championshipsand National Clubs 2003.

National Clubs 2002The Host club was Queensland Academy ofRhythmic Gymnastics. Meryl Papas and heramazing team of workers held yet anothersuccessful National Clubs Championships. QRGAhosted an invitational Level 4-6 tournament priorto the National Club event. Queensland Academyof Rhythmic Gymnastics won Club of the year.

TRAINING CAMPSLevel 4-10 January 2002: The program of theJanuary camp was very comprehensive due to therelease of the National Program Manual and thecontinued devolvement of the Categories andGrades program. The Levels Code has taken apositive direction in judging and provides achallenge for all level of gymnasts.

Levels 4-10 December 2002: The focus of theDecember Camp was Categories and Grades. Thedocument, which covers all aspects of this work,is the multiples supplement to the NationalProgram Manual.

Stages Camp: Each year the Stages gymnastscome into camp for their Medical and skills testing, and each year we see a marked improvement inthe preparation of our young elite gymnasts. Weare delighted to have our “younger” Stagesgymnasts in attendance in camp. This camp is theirintroduction to representation in sport and itprovides them with an opportunity to meet someof the people who they will be involved with duringtheir sporting career. Credit must go to theindividual program coaches and the NationalCoaching Staff for the technical improvement ofour Elite gymnasts. The NCS have developed aNational Warm up which is to be taught to allNational Squad gymnasts in preparation for theirrepresentative tours/competitions.

Invitational Camps: In July 2002 the VictorianHigh Performance Centre invited Eva Serrano -World Championships Bronze medallist to run aclinic. This camp was an open invitation to allgymnasts across Australia. Jo Edinger and JoMansfield took their club gymnasts to Canada toexplore the draft 2003 Code and to work with BBIgnatova.

Australian Championships – 2002/3South Australia was a wonderful host again andhas provided us with memorable Championshipsover the past 3 years. We are now in the positionthat it is necessary to limit our entries as theprogram is becoming too large and thus financiallynot viable. In an endeavor to reduce our programto within the time frame, the SMC has met anddiscussed the program and associated costs atlength with GA. We reduced the Finals program

and this proved very successful so we will remainwith this format.

CONCLUSIONThe SMC thought that 2002 would be a year ofconsolidation and stability rather we have beenextremely busy keeping up to date with the ever-changing regulations from FIG and incorporatingthem in our National Programs. I must thank mycolleagues on the SMC who continue toencourage the RG Community to challengethemselves in developing the sport. Danni Peersand Jane Allen and the staff of GymnasticsAustralia are always ready to support our goalsand provide us assistance. We appreciate andthank Danni for her commitment to RG. JaneAllen is always clear, decisive and objective in heradvice and I personally thank her for that.

Unfortunately, a slightdecrease in membership was experienced withinthe Kindergym area with a total of 18692participants being registered by the close of theyear, compared to 19200 in the previous year. Thedecrease could, in the main, be contributed to theclosure of several regional South Australian basedclubs due to the price of insurance.

INTERNATIONAL SELECTION TRIALSThe International Selection Trials and National SquadTraining Camp were held at the AIS in Canberra fromthe 25th – 27th January. Camp personnel included a skillscoach, judges, choreographers and a team of medicalofficers from CSC Health in WA. All athletes wererequired to perform their routines in front of a selectionpanel. Immediately following the trial, all athletesattended an intensive two days of training where theyreceived expert advice and guidance from camppersonnel. Athletes were assessed on the standard oftheir performance and their overall application to settasks throughout the two days of the camp.

INTERNATIONAL EVENTSSuzuki World CupThe first event on the international calendar was theSuzuki World Cup held in Tokyo from the 13th – 14th

April 2002. This was the 13th World Cup run by theInternational Aerobic Federation. A total of 116 athletesrepresenting 17 participating member federationscompeted in 6 categories of competition. For the firsttime, two new youth categories were introduced thatshowcased the talent of young athletes from aroundthe world.

Australia was well represented with the WA Senior Trio(Leah Henville, Melissa Davies and Melissa Read)winning the bronze medal, Sandi Carmichael winningbronze and Kieran Gorman placing 6th in the YouthVarsity category. Lauren Farry placed 4th in the SeniorFemale category. Karon Williams represented Australiaon the judging panel and was the spokesperson forGymnastics Australia at the IAF World Congress. KerrynCormick was the official Coach for the Australian Team.

ANAC World ChampionshipsThe ANAC World Championships were held in MiamiBeach Florida from the 5th – 10th August 2002. Withthe FIG threatening to ban athletes from future FIGevents if they attended the ANAC World Championshipsand the threat of possible sanctions on GymnasticsAustralia by the FIG if Gymnastics Australia supportedsending a team to the event, it was decided not to sendathletes to the event. A period of reprieve was requestedto the ANAC to allow Gymnastics Australia toinvestigate the issues at hand and to present its case tothe FIG. All National Squad athletes were kept informedof the situation and accepted Gymnastics Australia’sdecision.

Lauren Farry was invited by the Director of ANAC tocompete at the event. She competed fullyunderstanding the repercussions that could be imposedon her by the FIG. Lauren was not perturbed by thesethreats and successfully competed winning the WorldChampionship title in the Individual Female category.

2002 was a year where Sport Aerobics continued to attract new athletes into the competition arenawith the launch of the AEROSkools Program and the staging of the National Championships inMelbourne attracting over 500 athletes. At an international level the politics of sport did affect Australianrepresentation at two of the three major international events. While the number of Australian athletescompeting oversees was down, the results were outstanding with Lauren Farry achieving a WorldChampionship title in 2002.

FIG World ChampionshipsThe FIG World Championships were held in KlaipedaLithuania from the 29th – 31st July 2002. Leah Henvillewas the only Australian athlete to compete in theevent. Unfortunately Stuart Fisher had to withdrawdue to illness. It was unfortunate the FIG WorldChampionships and the ANAC World Championshipswere only five days apart. The majority of NationalSquad athletes trained for selection to compete at theANAC World Championships. With the decision madenot to send a team to the ANAC event, time did notallow athletes to enter the FIG event.

Karon Williams judged at the event and Trudi Nursewas the appointed coach. Karon also attended theFIG Round Table Discussion where the ANAC and FIGissues were discussed amongst the 33 memberfederations present at the meeting.

New Zealand National ChampionshipsThe New Zealand National Championships providedthe opportunity for National Squad athletes thatmissed out competing at the ANAC and FIG WorldChampionships with the chance to compete in anevent close to home. The event was held on the 12th

October at Selwyn College Theatre, KohimaramaAuckland. All Australian athletes achieved a top 3placing indicating the high standard of performanceof our National Squad athletes. All athletes and officialsthoroughly enjoyed the experience and every effortwill be made to ensure Australia is represented atfuture New Zealand events.

Libby Boak was the Head of Delegation and judged atthe event. Justine Bratanavicius was the appointedCoach.

National ChampionshipsThe 6th National Championships were held at theMelbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on the 31st

August – 1st September. Over 500 athletes from thebeginner through to the elite competed at the event. The popularity of the Sport Aerobics Levels divisionswas evident by the 83% increase in entries comparedto 2001. The event was hosted by Gymnastics Australiaand special thanks must go to the GA staff for theirtime and effort in running the event over the two days.

AEROSkools PARTICIPATION PROGRAMIn 2002, with funding assistance from the ASC,Gymnastics Australia launched its AEROSkoolsprogram in WA, SA, VIC and TAS. 2002 was a year of regrouping for Trampoline Sports. An Elite Coaches conference foreach discipline of Trampoline, Double Mini Trampoline and Tumbling was formed to allowdirect input to the National SMC on elite matters. Gymnastics Australia employed aNational Elite Coordinator to oversee and respond to the recommendations from the EliteCoaches Conferences. This proved to be successful.

A second focus area was to develop a “National Club Levels” competition in an effort tospread participation to all athletes in all levels. Queensland Gymnastics and the RobertsonGymnastics Club held this event successfully and the event will continue to be developedover the next few years until it can stand alone on the National calendar.

Our athletes enjoyed a range of events over the year and achieved some great results.

2002 Annual Report

The year 2002 has proved to be a particularlychallenging and at times rewarding one. Thefurther progression in the workings of theSport Management Committee structure isnow becoming more widely accepted butthere is stil l an improved structure ofcommunication within Gymnastics NSWrequired to ensure that effective servicedelivery is provided for the member. Thisimproved communication will become thefocus of the management of the organisationfor 2003.

It is timely to remind all that the SportManagement Committee, duly elected by themembership, is responsible for the technicaland competition aspects of the sport, with theadministration and communication providedby management. The NSWGA board will focuson financial planning and management, strategic planning, policy and procedure, marketing and promotion, facilities, sponsorship and liaison with governmentagencies. Day to day operational matters andthe link with clubs and members is providedin the most part by the staff at NSWGA office. This structure which encompasses gymnasts, officials, clubs, committees, board andemployees is the Gymnastics NSWorganisation. Collectively we are GymnasticsNSW, all working toward a common goal ofproviding fun, fitness and friendship throughparticipation in a wide range of sport andrecreation programs.

It is pleasing to see the number of registeredgymnasts continues to slightly increase eachyear. This can be attributed to the addition ofextra Gymsport programs but is largely dueto the active local promotion of gymnasticsby clubs and coaches and the quality programsthey offer the community within their region. The flat fee membership system is definitelyimproving the administration requirement by

It is with much pleasure that I am able to begin my report by taking the opportunity tocongratulate all gymnasts, coaches and officials who represented New South Wales andAustralia during 2002. While the focus of Gymnastics NSW is fun, fitness and friendship forthe membership, representation of state and country is the pinnacle of any sportingachievement. Special recognition needs to be made of the achievements of Philippe Rizzo insecuring the first World Championship gold medal for artistic gymnastics and his outstandingperformance at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Detailed achievements andoutstanding performance of other gymnasts will be covered in the Gymsport sectionsthroughout the annual report.

the club and assisting with management ofcash flow at both the club and state office.Additional programs that are being offeredwithin Gymnastics should continue to attractparticipation from the market and in turn leadto continued increase in registered members. It is anticipated that further new initiativeswill ensure that all who participate inGymnastics will be proud of their associationwith the state and national body.

The national Club 10 trial continued intophase two of the project with 69 clubsparticipating throughout the country. Club10 will become the framework for thenational affiliation and accreditation systemfor all gymnastics clubs from 2003. Improvedquality systems and programs delivered to thecommunity by member clubs will become thebenchmark that determines how the sport isperceived and accepted by the community.Gymnastics has an outstanding opportunityto capture a larger slice of the early childhoodparticipation market by delivering qualityprograms in a safe environment, key elementsthat the public is demanding. Club 10 willprovide the framework to assist clubs withthis service delivery to the market.

A critical point for GNT was the workshop forBoard Members and staff held in June andfacilitated by Gymnastics Australia CEO, Jane Allen.Over two days the Board reviewed our currentconstitution then developed a completely newconstitution that reflected a new managementstructure. The new structure brings us into linewith national office structure, allowing easierliaison with GA and identification of responsibilitiesof individual Board Members. The new constitutionwas unanimously accepted at the AGM, as wasthe adoption of a flat fee structure. With theelection of a new Board of Management (butmostly the same faces) under the new constitution,I became chairperson of the Board.

Following the June workshop the Board developeda renewed sense of purpose. I am proud of theway all Board Members set aside vested interestsand worked together for the good of theAssociation. I would like to thank all BoardMembers for their efforts during the second halfof the year, but especially Linda McKenna, LindaRobertson and Karl Metcalf, who took onsignificant additional responsibilities following theresignation of the Administration and FinanceOfficer, Kim Medcalf. I must also give special thanksto our new Development Officer, Sharon Hartleywho coped admirably with all the change as shetried to settle into her position.

EVENTS

TerritoryNT was very fortunate to have two FIG judgesattend our Championships in 2002. Ellena Papas(RG) helped our local judges cope with theintricacies of the new code and ran a workshopfor judges while here. Dianne Smith (ACR) ran ajudges’ course before the Championships andworkshops for our National Championshipscompetitors during the Championships. The adviceand experience of both judges on their judges’panels was invaluable. The encouragement theygave to our gymnasts and Technical Members wasmuch appreciated. I would like to thank GA fortheir assistance in making these judges available.

Luke was awarded the AustralianLevels Men’s Gymnast of the Year and followedthis up with 3rd overall, silver on Horizontal Barand bronze on Floor.

WAG: Five NT gymnasts attended NationalChampionships: Hannah Beere, Sally Beere, AlexisLenders and Rekeesha Fry (all Level 7) and NatashaMcKenzie (Level 8). The girls competed well andgained valuable experience in this level ofcompetition.

ACR: NT had three teams compete at NationalChampionships: one Level 4 Women’s Pair (KatieStrobel and Ashlea Beckett) and two Level 4Women’s Trios (Danielle Robertson, Skye Merrettand Kirsty Robertson, and Sarah Dawes, ModennaReid and Angela Harrison). All gymnasts andcoaches had benefited from the training withDianne Smith during NT Championships and theirperformances exceeded expectations.

MANAGEMENTThe Board of Management negotiated an arrangementwith Gymnastics Australia that saw GA staff providingmanagement services to the Association throughoutthe year. This agreement not only ensured thatmanagement and governance support could beprovided to the Board and staff but the financial savingresulting could be re-directed into the Club Servicesarea, again ensuring the Association could becomemore service focused.

The key focus of Jenny Collins’ appointment to theExecutive Director position was to implementadministration practices and management policies toensure the long term and efficient operations of theAssociations office. While many key areas wereaddressed throughout the year, much work is stillrequired and will continue over the coming year.

GOVERNANCEAn enormous amount of work was completed toensure the Association’s Constitution could be revisedtaking into account new business practices, structuresand the growing needs of our sport. The revisedConstitution, and supporting By-Laws, positionsQueensland well in regards to structure and operationsframework, for the oncoming years.

Adoption of the revised Constitution in May includedthe implementation of a new business style boardstructure. The smaller size Management Committee(7 members from 13) allows the Board to take on agovernance role, specifically focussing on policy andstrategic direction for Gymnastics within Queensland.

A key achievement in the later half of the year was theadoption of operation policies and procedures toensure effective and efficient management throughoutthe year. This included:-

# Production and adoption of a Board MembersHandbook outlining each positions’ role andresponsibilities, code of conduct for BoardMembers, GQ’s operational structure etc.

# Adoption of meeting procedures# Issuing of a Policy and Resource folder to each

Board Member

In addition to their normal tasks the Board alsocommenced developing the Association’s 2003-2005Strategic Plan. This process incorporated consultationwith key stakeholders along with the staging of anumber of special planning workshops. This task willbe completed in the early months of 2003.

FINANCESA key focus of Management throughout 2002, inpartnership with the Board of Management, wasFinancial Management to ensure improvement in bothoperational practices and the Association’s financial

2002 has certainly been a busy and productive year for Gymnastics Queensland, particularly in regardsto re-shaping our State Office and implementation/adoption of effective management practices acrossoperational areas to ensure the Association could become more service focused for members.

It has also been a great year for participation in Queensland with registration’s hitting a top of 20261gymnasts from our 139 member clubs.

stability. An excellent result has been achieved withinthis area for 2002.Gymnastics Queensland’s relationship with ourGovernment partner, Sport and RecreationQueensland, has never been more professional orproductive. We are extremely thankful for theiroutstanding support and the entire sport, includingboth elite and participation elements along with clubservices, education and events, all benefit from thispartnership.

SPORT MANAGEMENT COMMITTEESThe revised Constitution has seen the adoption of anew management structure for all Gymsports, whichwill ensure the representatives involved in theGymsports can be more responsible, and accountable, for the overall management and directions of theirsports. 2002 was a year for learning and it will beanother year, at least, before the benefits of the re-structure can be appreciated.

Each SMC was charged with the task of preparingTechnical Regulations, Event Regulations, Projectbudgets (for the first time) and their 2003 calendar ofevents. The first “Joint Technical” meeting was alsostaged in the later half of the year. As part of the StateOffice re-structure we have appointed staff to supportand assist each SMC.

HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAMFantastic work has been undertaken by theManagement team at our very successful State TrainingCentre. This specifically focused on improvingmanagement and finance practices. While thisenormous amount of work has been undertaken, allinvolved have also continued to ensure that thecoaching team could maintain their support anddedication to the athletes. This has ensured thatQueensland has continued to have representatives onNational squads and on Australian teams.

CLUB SERVICESThe Board of Management worked extremely hard tosupport improvement within the area of Club Services. This led to the appointment of two full-time ClubServices Officers in July. A more extensive club visitationprogram will be undertaken as part of theimplementation of the new Club Affiliation andAccreditation scheme, Club 10 during 2003.

CONCLUSIONGymnastics Queensland is indebted to our memberclubs, athletes and hundreds of volunteers for theirsupport and on-going commitment to Gymnastics. Thefantastic and enormous amount of work that has beenundertaken by Board Members and staff also needsto be acknowledged as this has led to a very successfulend of year result.

On the other hand, a significant number of ruralclubs, particularly kindergyms, have experienceddeclining numbers, and it means that the flat feesystem is constantly challenged. The Board intendsto review the current system in 2003, and makesome refinements.

The introduction of Club 10 has been a highlightof 2002. We were successful in obtaining grantfunding from the Office of Recreation, Sport andRacing for a full-time Club 10 Officer, from July 12002, and we are of course hopeful of this fundingbeing renewed for 2003/2004. Having a full-timeperson, Tamara Jerram, to oversee the transitionfrom trial phase to full implementation has beeninvaluable, and also allowed us to return HeatherMooney to her original Kindergym DevelopmentOfficer role. Tamara worked closely with the Phase2 clubs, as we planned for the national roll-out ofClub 10 early in 2003. We anticipate much interestfrom the clubs in participating in the Club 10process.

We were also fortunate to obtain funding for ahalf-time Education Officer, providing for adedicated position for the first time. Kate Johnsonhas been working closely with GA, to rationaliseour updating systems and to set up a structurededucation delivery process. Again, this position isbased on annual funding, and these uncertaintiesplace great pressure on both the organisation andthe individuals concerned. However, this is thenature of sports funding, and we resolve to takeevery advantage of these positions while thefunding supports us.

The introduction of a user-pays system for thenational public liability insurance scheme wassurprisingly smooth. The very large clubs, whichexperienced an enormous increase in the cost ofinsurance, were able to verify that obtaining similarcover outside the scheme would be at exorbitantcost, or not possible, and the smaller clubsappreciated the benefit of a cost system whichmore accurately reflected their membership base.

GSA again hosted a most successful NationalRhythmic Gymnastics Championships in July 2002,with over 150 participants.

SA’s participation in the AEROskools program wasvaluable. While there were relatively low numbersof participants in the State Championships, thenumber of schools actually involved in the program

This has again been an interesting year for GSA. During the year it appeared that ournumbers were declining, and that we would lose a number of clubs, with some indicatingthat they would not re-affiliate in 2003. By the end of the year, it was clear that while ourclub numbers had declined slightly, the overall membership numbers were stable, a verygood result.

has been quite high, and we are confident thatin 2003 there will be an increased level ofparticipation. Our Sport Aerobics SMC isfollowing the program with much interest, asthere is very strong support for extending the sportinto schools in South Australia.

Our athletes have achieved at the highest levelsduring 2002, with Jacqui Dunn’s achievements atthe Manchester Commonwealth Games aparticular highlight. Her consistency atinternational level has been an inspiration to thegirls in our High Performance Program. Similarlyour boys’ achievements at national level havebeen most rewarding, and Sam Offord’s move onto the AIS from our program a particular highlight. In trampoline, Ben Wilden has performedconsistently throughout the year, culminating ina good performance at the NationalChampionships, and in Rhythmic Gymnastics, good performances at the nationals resulted inselection to the National Development Squad forKayla Til l ing, Lynn Yu and DaniellePapadothomakos, with Jessica Sandru beingselected for the Junior National Squad. Our sportaerobics athletes performed well at their NationalChampionships, with Emily Sharp, Hayley Woodand Sandi Carmichael being successful.

Discussions with the AIS have resulted in anexcellent relationship being established, in whicha clear pathway for our MAG athletes has beenmapped out, with support from the AIS helpingour athletes to achieve their best. On-goingdiscussions with SASI have resulted in access tovarious SASI services, and while there is nofinancial support at this stage, the relationship isa valued one. It was particularly pleasing thatour coach Jeb Silsbury was successful in gainingan AIS scholarship for 2003, and we acknowledgethe support of GA in this process.

In summary, 2002 was a stable year for theAssociation, and we look forward to an exciting2003, with Club 10 in full swing.

Tasmania2002 has been a strong and positive year for gymnasticsin our state. The number of gymnasts registered is at anall time record of 2553. This reflects not only the successof our flat fee system but also strong growth of someclubs.

Club 10 has continued to show pleasing progress in 2002.I would like to take this opportunity to commend our Club10 officer Brad Edwards who has been a very strong anduseful resource for our State. This year has seen a furtherfour clubs enter the program, bringing our total so far toseven.

Our own initiative Tassie Clubs has also been utilised thisyear to effect with the Coaching Director and myselfvisiting North and North Western clubs to assist in theirdevelopment.

WAG has been particularly pleasing for me in 2002. Fromthe first competition (held in the Kingborough SportsCentre’s new premises) through to State Championshipsin August, I have never known such a mood of co-operation and friendliness. This has resulted in a recordnumber of entries in State Championships and awillingness with clubs to enter candidates for judgingcourses. I would like to congratulate Mark Moncur andhis committee on a job well done.

Gymnasts and judges numbers have increased, our stateteam had their most successful results in over 10 yearsand the Women’s Technical Committee has started to forma group of committed and co-operative individuals forthe good of the sport. The year began with a Women’sTechnical Forum attended by representatives from overthe state. At the forum we set out our goals for the futureand how we were going to achieve these goals.Considering this was a new cycle plus the change over tothe new Vaulting horse the competition season progressedvery smoothly this year. There was a concerted effort byall clubs to work together and respect each other andthis has resulted in a huge increase in the number ofgymnasts attending competitions.

This was always going to be a tough year from a judgingpoint of view. We have a really good group of youngjudges coming through who will be very good judges giventhe right experience and guidance. Being a new cycle weran judges courses at all levels with over 30 new judgesparticipating in level 1 judges courses through out the 3regions of the state. Judging is the area that will requirethe most work and investment of time and money in thefuture so that it may continue to grow in numbers andquality.

This has been another difficult year for MAG with lowerregistrations and less activity than in recent years. However there have been a number of positive outcomes:

¨ The new Levels scheme is up & running and newjudges qualified to officiate in it

¨ The State Squads have continued with gymnasts from3 clubs participating

¨ The Level 7 Open team represented us withcompetence at Nationals

¨ Both Novice Events were viable with 3 clubs attendingeach

Out of the 5 clubs offering Rhythmic programs only 2were actively involved in competitions this year.Understandable due to the complexity of having tochoreograph new routines for each level. Sadly we hadto farewell Burnie from the Rhythmic arena as theircoaches, Kay and Katrina Kelly, moved interstate early inthe year. The numbers of gymnasts participating in thesport has remained fairly constant even though our oldermore experienced gymnasts from the last few years have

nearly all now retired. There does seem to be an increasein younger gymnasts entering the sport at the lower levels.Throughout 2002, Tasmanian Trampoline Sports hasprogressed rapidly and successfully in the interstate andnational arena. Our goals for 2002 have been achieved, and an increase in participant numbers in the southernand northern centres is evident. The standard and depthof performance at Interclub is greater than in previousyears.

The Squad system used extensively this year has indeedenhanced the level of performances in Tasmania. It hasacted as a guide for coaches on when, where and how toget their athletes to the National level, and be named inthe Tasmanian State Team. Squad members have beeninvited to participate in a state training session with adifferent interstate coach each time. This has been madepossible by a grant from Gymnastics Tasmania to part-fund these expenses and has been greatly appreciated.Tasmania is looking forward to a continued workingrelationship with them all and others in the future.

The Tasmanian Trampoline Sports Championships wasmoved to Friends School this year. The 2002Championships were in fact our largest championshipsyet. Two Tasmanian clubs competed (Hobart andLaunceston PCYC), with 26 competitors (up from 11 in2001). A sure sign our sport is developing within the state. Our coaches have had the opportunity to update and gainexperience through working alongside both interstatecoaches and myself at regular State Training sessions. Thedifferent techniques and styles gained from this experiencehave benefited the development of our coaches. A Level1 Judging Course was held in Launceston in October. Dueto this we now have an abundance of Level 1 Judges andcan almost fill two full panels for our Interclubs (Levels 1-3 only). A Level 2 Judging Course will be held hopefullyearly next year.

In the coaching director’s area there was less activity inthe accredited courses offered this year, with only MAG/WAG and GG covered. On a positive note, some clubshave taken the initiative of offering update courses tocoaches and I believe this should be encouraged in thefuture. The importance of the supervising or mentor coachin each club needs to be recognised and these peopleneed supporting where possible. Not only are they criticalin the accreditation process of new coaches, but also inthe provision of updating of qualified coaches.

For some coaches, updating seems to be a difficult chorerather than the normal behaviour of any practisingprofessional. Whilst there may be occasions when anaccredited course provides good updating opportunities,I agree with GA that this should be the exception ratherthan the rule

This year the State Championships were held on 24th and25th August at the Kingborough Sports Centre. TheTrampoline Sports State Championships were separatedfrom the other disciplines and held three weeks earlieron 3rd and 4th August at the Friend’s School. There was atotal of 173 competitors who competed in the 4 disciplinesover the 3 days of competition, 7 RG, 15 MAG , 48 TRP,103 WAG. WAG and TRP both noticeably increased theirnumbers while there was a decline in MAG and RGnumbers.

Thanks for the support from our Clubs, Board, TechnicalCommittees, Gymnasts, Coaches, Judges and Volunteersfor a great effort during 2002.

Victoria

The Club 10 phase two pilot was conducted inVictoria with 4 clubs. The importance of the pilotcannot be underestimated as the Club 10 systemis shaping the direction and future developmentof gymnastics in this country, and specificallyVictoria for many years. It is an exciting project,GV are fully behind it, and so too we trust are ourclubs.

The insurance issues are still with us, but it ispleasing to see that our clubs have managed theprocess of increased fees and risk managementwell. Gymnastics Victoria has put in place manyprocesses to improve risk management, clubs areencouraged to seek assistance in this area fromthe Club 10 team. The higher cost has impactedmost heavily on the smaller clubs not only in termsof dollars, but also in the conduct of their services

The gymnast registration process was out-sourcedto Gymnastics Australia in a bid to reduce doublehandling and increase efficiency. The system willcontinue through 2003 in a more streamlinedmanner. The growing alignment of Gymnastics ineach state with the National body is showingpositive results best illustrated with the Club 10.The resultant strength of the sport will onlyincrease. Victoria appreciates the support andleadership demonstrated by Gymnastics Australia.

The Commonwealth Games were a highlight forall gymnastics and we congratulate all the athletesand officials. The High Performance Centre andSwinburne have developed into the focal point forgymnastics in Victoria. The Centre is used for mostcoach education, the Leaps and Boundsconference, state squad and state team training.Swinburne facilities are used for theory sections ofcourses, many SMC meetings, parent meetings andthe Annual Awards night.

Congratulations to all Victorian Clubs. Membership has increased to a fantastic 18,500.Contributing factors are, the success of the Flat Fee system, the return of several clubs to GVaffiliation, the work of clubs to increase their membership and finally, the successfulintroduction of our newer sports has also contributed to the growing numbers.

With support from VicHealth, Gymnastics Victoriahas concentrated on assisting clubs to createhealthy environments for their members. To createsmoke-free policies and smoke free gyms also topromote healthy eating as a way of life and tooffer healthy food choices at every opportunityThese two issues are to be imbedded in the Club10 Star rating system. Our partnership with Sport and Recreation hasenabled us to support our development services,to develop Sport Aerobics, and to initiaterelationships with other sports to develop theconcept of all sports using gymnastics as part oftheir basic training. We also are indebted to the VIS for their ongoingsupport, and the exciting step of including theMAG program as a tier 2 sport. To the Board, Technical Directors, Committees, volunteers and GV staff, for your tireless workand boundless energy, thank you.

GymnasticsWestern Australia

For Gymnastics in Western Australia, 2002 was another yearof outstanding success on the international stage and thiswas further enhanced by a significant increase in overallmembership at Club level. The past year has also seen theexpansion of the Club 10 Program to include a total seventrial Clubs. This project has been very well received and welook forward to its full-scale introduction in 2003.

Sound financial management and increased revenues havecontributed to the Association delivering a healthy profit of$29,840 to 31st December 2002, and have brought ourbalance sheet to a surplus position of $10,326. This achievesa goal of more than ten years’ standing and consequently isparticularly pleasing.

HIGHLIGHTIn the international arena, during the year, we saw a rangeof outstanding gymnastic performances by our WesternAustralian, and Australian athletes. The highlights of whichwere at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester whereAllana Slater, Sarah Lauren took out no less than twoindividual gold medals, and a team gold. This is a magnificentresult for Women’s Gymnastics in WA and a credit not onlyto our athletes, but to coaches Nicolai Lapchine, Jo Richardsand Program Manager Liz Chetkovich. Allana and Sarah’sfinal medal tally reads as follows:

Allana Slater: Team Gold, Vault (Gold) Uneven Bars(Silver), Balance Beam (Silver),All Around (Bronze)

Sarah Lauren: Team Gold, Floor (Gold)

Allana followed up this performance with a third placing onfloor at the World Cup Final in Stuttgart, and representationat the 2002 World Championships. Sarah, following hersuccess at the Manchester Commonwealth Games decidedto retire from gymnastics to concentrate on other aspects ofher life. We wish her well in that decision.

GYMSPORTSEach one of the seven gymnastic disciplines is expertly runby a Sports Management Committee (SMC) who has theresponsibility for their own discipline’s specific technicalmatters, events, participation and State teams. In 2002 wehave continued to see the development of our SMC structureand credit must go to each of the SMC’s for the successfulmanagement and delivery of their respective disciplines.

Men’s GymnasticsIn Men’s Gymnastics following on from the strong growth inthe Men’s High Performance Program we saw internationalrepresentation from John Carroll, Ian Greenwell, Arran Grayand the successful National selection for Martin Jozwiak. WAwas also represented internationally by Levels gymnasts’Andrew Clothier and Casey Douglas.

Women’s GymnasticsWomen’s Gymnastics has had a very positive year as outlinedearlier with exceptional international results. At Women’sNational Championships in the Levels section we also sawour Level 7 team finish a highly creditable fourth, spearheadedby Corri Keating who was second overall. The Women’s SMChave also been very productive developing and working totheir Strategic Plan and restructuring the WAG competitivestreams to include a fourth competitive steam in 2003.

Rhythmic GymnasticsThere is a new sentiment of cohesion and co-operation inthe WA Rhythmic community. This was highlighted whenour Rhythmic gymnasts and coaches had a successfulAustralian Championships both on and off the arena withTeam gold in Stage 3, Team silver in Level 7, and Tanya Vahalafinishing second overall senior. On the international scenecongratulations to both Tanya Vahala and Courtney Holloway.

General GymnasticsOver the past year we have seen dramatic changes in thegeneral gymnastics area. We have witnessed an outstandingGymfest event, the continued development of the WA Wheelteam and the introduction of cheerleading to WA. WA’s Perth

Western AustraliaAngels scooped the pool of Australia by taking out overallfirst place at the first ever Australian CheerleadingChampionships.

Sport AerobicsIn Sport Aerobics WA athletes produced an outstandingdisplay at the 2002 Australian Championships winning twelvegold medals, five silver and three bronze. In addition, nineteam members were selected into National squads. In theinternational arena we were represented by the followingathletes, and officials:

• WORLD CUPLeah Henville, Melissa Read and Melissa Davies – Elite TrioKieran Gorman - Varsity Individual divisionKaron WIlliams - Judge

• WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPSLeah Henville – Individual Female divisionTrudi Nurse – CoachKaron Williams - Judge

Trampoline SportsCongratulations must go to our Trampoline Sports SMC whohave successfully managed the introduction of TrampolineSports to the sport of gymnastics. The Trampoline SMC alsosent a WA team to Gosford NSW for the AustralianChampionships.

Sport Acrobatics2002 saw our first WA Sports Acrobatic team at Nationals.Ably coached by Ken Caraher the team (all West Coastgymnasts) produced some excellent results, including a thirdplacing by Kzysztof Pudelek and Catherine Trignell in MixedPairs Level 6.

REGIONSIn country WA we have seen the professional delivery ofgymnastics services through three Regional GymnasticAssociations, North West, Great Southern Central South, andthe South West. The manner in which these Associationsefficiency run coaching and judging courses, events andworkshops is a credit to gymnastics, and is highly regardedby other sports. Particular congratulations should go to NorthWest Regional Gymnastic Association for the professionalmanner in which they have conducted their activities. TheNorth West has also seen its first ever state representativewith Leanne Morup from Broome, accompanied by CoachRaelene Malcolm, competing for Western Australia at theNational Sport Aerobics Championships in Melbourne.

CONCLUSIONA special well done must go to all State representatives inWestern Australian Gymnastic teams who proudly competedfor our state at the various Australian Championships, andother events throughout the year.

Gymnastics is a great sport, and your support is appreciatedin helping as many people as possible enjoy its qualities. Ioffer thanks to the Volunteers, Clubs and our dedicated stafffor their efforts in the expert delivery of gymnastics to thecommunity in Western Australia for the past year. Specialmention and thanks should be made of four recently retiredvolunteers for their outstanding contribution to our sport;President - Peter Ruttledge, Finance Director – Mike Mullin,Planning Board Member Bruce Barnard, and Women’sJudging Coordinator – Jane Collins. I also highlight the helpgymnastics receives from all the Association sponsors andother partners including; BHP Billiton, Woodside AustralianEnergy, Healthway, the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Western Australian Institute of Sport, the Town of Vincentand Gymnastics Victoria.
