Message from the Head of School Our parent education programme and forums are underway again for 2014. This week we hosted an informative and interesting session about the importance of education outside the classroom led by Mr. Hunt, and on Tuesday we welcomed our new families at their induction session. Next Wednesday morning we will be looking at the use of ICT for our Primary students and on the evening of Wednesday 4 February a similar session will take place for Senior School parents. Finally we are scheduling our next whole school parent forum after the whole school assembly on Friday 31 January; we will be looking at upcoming building programmes, progress on school improvement and taking questions from you, our families. We hope that the enhancement of these aspects of our home/school communication is helping you as families. The Government Inspector Tickets are now on sale for our second senior drama production: The Government Inspector. Written by Nikolai Gogol in 1836, the play explores what happens when a nasty little town full of corrupt officials gets an unexpected visit from… The Government Inspector – or is he? With a cast of over 50 senior students, the play promises to be an evening of excellent entertainment. Tickets are available from Erwin or Runah at Reception. Please pay as you book. Performances: 30-31 January at 6.30pm & 1 February at 2.30pm and 6.30pm. Tickets: P150 for students; P300 for adults. Please book early to avoid disappointment! New Chief Operating Officer (COO) at BSM We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Maita Borromeo as our new COO. She will be taking on the portfolio of line-managing; leading all support operations at BSM and working closely with myself, Glenn Hardy and Helen Olds in leading the whole school. Maita has come to us from The Hague, The Netherlands where she spent 18 years of her professional life. She has worked in various international courts such as the U.N. Primary School News A great week in Primary, busy as ever, fun always and with an exciting learning buzz around school. This was amplified with each year group sharing some fabulous learning that has been taking place in their year group at the assembly this morning, and it’s always wonderful too for the children to see what is happening across the school. On Wednesday, we continued our parent learning workshops with a presentation about learning outside of the class-room, looking largely at trips and in particular residential trips. Richard Hunt delivered this and has provided a summary of key points made below-: Learning outside the classroom changes lives… At BSM we offer exciting and varied ‘learning outside of the classroom’ opportunities to our students. Every year group throughout the school is very fortunate to be able to participate in a range of school trips. We believe that there are many positive benefits for young people when they attend. Benefits can include, but not limited to: increased enthusi-asm and motivation towards learning; making connections with what they have been learning about in school with the ‘real’ outside world; improved independence; resilience; teamwork and communication skills and many more. Safety is our top priority whenever we take students outside and away from school. With this in mind, thorough risk as-sessments are conducted, looking at transportation, accommodation, the activities, communication and other areas. We identify potential hazards and risks, putting in control measures to reduce the level of risk to an acceptable level. “Exposure to well managed risks helps children learn important life skills, including how to manage risks for them-selves… children, in particular need to learn how to manage risks, and adventure activities such as rock climbing, sailing and canoeing are an ideal way of doing this.” - UK Health and Safety Executive For more information, queries and questions please contact: Richard Hunt [email protected] Experiencing all of the benefits this week were our Year 6 students who went on their residential trip to Corregidor and we will hear from them in the newsletter next week about their trip. Dear BSM Parents, Welcome to our second edition of the Lion’s Roar for 2014. As always, time seems to be flying by with Mock Examina-tions completed, a full activities programme up and running for Term 2 and a plethora of other enrichment events tak-ing place. This week our focus is on the Science department, bringing you up to date with some of the activities taking place with our Science students and introducing the latest in our series of help sheets. Last term our Year 8 students visited the Mind Museum and had a great time watching the Science show where they ‘burnt’ money, made a snake out of toothpaste, turned water into wine and imploded plastic bottles. Afterwards we all got to explore the museum and try out some of the really cool interactive exhibits- just look at Caitlin’s hair! The stu-dents then made leaflets about what they learnt at the Mind Museum, if you would like to read them they can be found on Haiku.

In Science our students develop investigation skills that allow them to gain a better understanding of the world around them. They use skills employed by scientists such as designing practical investigations to answer their own questions. They collect and analyse data, drawing their own conclusions before reviewing the evidence in the light of what is al-ready known from scientific literature. This learning process is all supported by an inquiry-based pedagogy and focused around real-life situations and problems which engage pupils and help to prepare them for future citizenship. ‘The important thing is to never stop questioning’ - Albert Einstein. For each module our students study there is a ‘big question’ which students strive to answer by studying a variety of topics. Last term Year 7 were finding out ‘What Keeps us Alive?’ and some of the topics included in this module were respiration, photosynthesis and physiology. The heart dissection was a big favourite and who knows we may have in-spired a future heart surgeon. KS3 parents are invited to read the help sheet found on the BSM KS3 Haiku site prepared for further guidance on how to support their son/daughter. Please contact Ms Sophie Fernandez [email protected] or Mr Thomas Moore [email protected] should you wish further information. We look forward to meeting you at events coming up in the next few weeks, including the Year 9 options evening, Year 9, 11 and 13 SLC’s and at our International dinner on 7 February. Nest week is Week A.

This year Primary School will be celebrating International Day on Friday, 7 February. The Primary

School will spend the day learning about and reflecting on issues which are currently affecting the

global community and will continue to do so in the future. We will encourage the children to devel-

op critical thinking about complex global issues presented in a child-friendly format. Children will

present their issues in a series of workshops and invite other classes to come and learn about their

topic. Children will be asked to come dressed in national costume, but certainly not limited to their

own country. Assembly will be at 1.30pm rather than our usual time in the morning at the end of which children will

take part in a mini international parade before being dismissed. Other fun activities ongoing during the day will be the

Amazing Race for Years 1-3 and a Filipino animation workshop for Years 4-6. Following on from this we very much look

forward to seeing all of you at the international dinner which promises to be every bit as fun and exciting as last year.

International dance acts, great food, an international parade as well as an auction with some fabulous items not to be

missed.

BSM 3 – 5 Ceres FC Match Report Aspirants B 15 January Claret School 5 – 2 BSM

Rugby BSM Varsity team kicked off last Saturday in the Midday heat against a strong ISM team in their league match. After los-ing the first half by two trys to zero, the BSM team rallied and came out all the stronger for a pulsating second half. A try from Josh Whyte, followed quickly by another from Antonio Thomas saw ISMs lead cut to just 2 points.

ISM battled back from the restart and managed to break through a tiring defense to increase the lead by 9. Never giving up, the boys fought back yet again with a well taken try in the corner from Andrew Holgate. Final score ISM 19 – 15 BSM

ASAs The first week of the new ASA term is now underway. With nearly 500 BSM students signing up from a wide range of activities it is great to see so many students signing up for some of our new clubs too. We are pleased to say that most students managed to receive their first choice activity, with many of them choosing several other clubs throughout the week.

I hope that you have found the new system easier to use and I will be asking for feedback in the weeks to come.

One for the parents… Boot Camp on Friday mornings is now up and running again and you can come and join in the fun from 6.00am on the Don Jones field. Click on Boot Camp to sign up.

Yoga has also started again on Wednesday mornings from 6.00 to 7.00am and this year we are also offering a slightly later class from 8.00am to 9.00am. This will be taken by an Urban Ashram Instructor and will cost P2000 for 6 weeks. We will require a minimum number for this to go ahead so sign up now to take advantage of this excellent rate. International Dinner, Friday 7 February Ticket sales From Monday 20 January, tickets will be on sale from Level 2 Reception, priced at P750 and P500 for BSM students. The ticket covers an ‘all you can eat’ buffet (but please don’t treat this as a challenge). All profits from the evening will go to the BSM Community Service fund.

Table reservations Anyone buying 10 tickets has the right to reserve a table. Erwin (Level 2 reception) is managing the table reserva-tions. Based on experience last year, the tables closest to the stage tend to book up very early.

Country booths 19 countries have confirmed that they will organize a national food booth as part of the buffet. Please see a message from the organising committee elsewhere in the Lion’s Roar for the list of countries, and contact information if you would like to participate.

Entertainment program 14 acts from the BSM community are now in rehearsal, and I can say with confidence that the standards match, and pos-sibly surpass, last year’s. We have something for almost everyone, and the acts range from the energy of a Bollywood wedding to the tranquillity of Thai angels. It’s a non-school night, and Spirits (who performed last year, for the latter half of the evening) will return for this year’s dinner, when they will also play for the latter half of the night. If you feel like an evening of dancing, please come pre-pared. It’s on Don Jones field, so I will be leaving my high heels at home.

Sponsorship To help cover our up-front costs, we are seeking support for the following items:

If you are able to support any of these items, please contact Dedet Santos on [email protected]

International Bazaar A number of countries are participating in an international bazaar. If you would like to get a table, please also contact Dedet Santos on the email address above.

Thanks and regards, Michael Morris BSM PTA President
