My personal planner even came with a built in reminder that Valentine’s Day is just a week away, so I best not forget to show the people in my life how much I love them. If I’m being honest, I’ve always had a little problem with Valentine’s Day – should I need to be reminded to show love to people in my life on this one day? Shouldn’t love be something that becomes part of my character? Our students this month will be hearing about love, but not the commercialized kind. We first want to remind our students that we are able to love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). I can love others better if I know first what God’s love looks like. 1 Corinthians tells us that love is patient and kind. It is not jealous, boastful, judgmental, arrogant, rude, or selfish. Love bears all things, believes all things, always hopes, always forgives, and always endures. In other words, NOTHING can alter real love. This is how God feels about you! There is NOTHING you can do or have done that has changed the way He loves you. What a hopeful message for us to keep and to share with others! Knowing how God feels about me, I find it very easy to love Him, which is the most important command that He has for us, but his second command is to love others (Matthew 22:37-39). This is sometimes difficult for us to do when we’ve been hurt by others or frustrated by their words and actions. Does He really expect me to love like Him in those circumstances? The answer is, yes, but He doesn’t expect that we do it on our own power. His example and His Holy Spirit give us the strength we need to love the seemingly unlovable. This month, as you work, talk, and play with your children, remind them of the love God has for them and how His outpouring of love on us helps us show the love of Christ to everyone in our families, classrooms, and community every day. CLASSROOM VALENTINE’S PARTIES Friday, February 12 Starts at 2 pm in the classrooms. Happy Valentine’s Day!

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be pa-tient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is

over all and through all and in all.

GETTING TO KNOW OUR TEACHERS & STAFFEach month in the Lion’s Roar, we will highlight teachers and school staff members so you can get to know them better. Each one is unique in his/her own way - take a moment to learn something new about the amazing people that interact with your child(ren) on a daily basis at Zion Lutheran School.

Something about myself you we may not know...I grew up on a farm and started driving when I was in third grade because my dad needed someone to drive the truck for him. It was a stick-shift and I often killed the engine so it often took a long time to get anywhere. But, I learned!!!!!

NATIONAL LUTHERAN SCHOOLS WEEKOur week was filled with God’s love in our teachers, students and staff. The week was complete with wacky Olym-pic games, praise rallys, all-school art projects, and a special service project, making toiletry bags for the homeless. The week wrapped with the students taping our Principal, Mrs. Baron, to a wall! They earned this by raising more than $500 for a Lutheran school in Haiti.

AROUND ZION LUTHERAN SCHOOL

Congratulations - Zion Lutheran School girls took 3rd place in the Holy Cross 7th grade tournament over Christmas break.

Zion Lutheran School volunteers took time out of their holiday break to ring bells for the Red Kettle Campaign for the Salvation Army. A great way to give back during the holiday season!

For their service project, fourth graders

collected foods and drinks such as peanut

butter crackers, oatmeal and apple sauce

for children in need in our community who

might not otherwise get a healthy snack

over the Christmas break. In total, the class

collected enough to help 30 kids this

ZLS first graders enjoyed a trip to the Missouri Botanical Gardens and learned a lot about plants and growth!

Page 11: Lion's Roar February 2016

11

AROUND ZION LUTHERAN SCHOOL

The sensory table in Mrs.

Call’s classroom is always a

fun activity!

Above and below: First graders came together for a group

project that was part of Social Studies. The students created

a town, using boxes and paint. They even got to vote on

the town name, location and the name of the mayor! Here

they are, building their “piece” of the town - such things as

banks, restaurants, schools and skyscrapers.

It is just like our teachers to find a learning and growing

moment in every situation. As our admissions office gets

a facelift, our first graders took the opportunity to create

a time capsule. Each contributed to the capsule with a

special note and time and date stamp, hopefully to be

revealed far, far in the future. What a cool way to leave a

lasting mark at Zion Lutheran School!

REGISTER TODAY!

NOW ENROLLING

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR THE 2016-2017 SCHOOL YEAR! Completing the registration process early is vital to our planning for staffing, classrooms, and programming in order to meet the educational needs for the upcoming year.

We have had a wonderful first half of the 2015-2016 school year, and we know God is going to continue do His good work in our school for the remainder of the year and into the next. In the past few years and months here at ZLS, God has supplied our needs and the needs of our students in many areas: - RTI program to identify and support students with academic needs: - Current and relevant incorporation of technology in every classroom - Renovation to our school gym and surrounding halls - Character education & leadership development within our “Faith Families” - Completion of standards-based National Lutheran School Accreditation

We know that His goodness will not end there. He has already began His good work for Zion’s future as we pre-pare for: - 1:1 technology implementation in 5th through 8th grades - Playground improvements for our students - A team approach to organizing our staff with our parent volunteers - Updating our approach to reading instruction

Beginning Wednesday, February 10, join us for a series of special mid-week services centered on the theme of Living Lent. Each service in this series focuses on a word to consider while living through this season of Lent as people of the Resurrection. After all, Lent isn’t about pretending for a time that Jesus hasn’t been cru-cified, or that He hasn’t been raised from the dead. He was, and He is!

Therefore, the Lenten season isn’t a time to wallow in sin and guilt, but to allow the Word of Christ to shape us together into a cross-formed, resurrection people. Each service in this series will help us to see that we are always alive in Christ, who died and was raised.Worship with us at 3:30 or 6:30pm with a time of food (check out the menus on page 7) and fellowship in between beginning at 4:15pm.

Weekly ThemesFebruary 10 (Ash Wednesday): PONDER – Luke 5:27-32 – Lent is a time to pon-der our relationship with God and with one another, to discover the love of God seen in the cross and the empty tomb.

February 17: PURPOSE – Luke 19:1-10 – This season is a time to find God’s purpose for our lives, fulfilled in our redemption by Jesus, who seeks and saves the lost and gives us new life.

February 24: PEOPLE – John 10:14-18 – We are called to be among people in this world. People matter to God; he sent Jesus to save them. People should matter to us; we are sent to love them.

March 2: PROCLAIM – 1 Peter 2:9-10 – To proclaim the story of Christ is to paint a picture of the God who seeks and embraces us. Our proclamation of the Savior brings faith to life.

March 9: PRAISE – Psalm 34:1-10 – Even in the midst of sorrow, we are called to celebrate the love of God and the joy that can be found only in Christ crucified, who reigns in glory now.

March 16: PAIN – Luke 15:11-32 & Luke 23:26-49 – The pain of rejection and the pain of a father when a son leaves are juxtaposed against the reckless love of God revealed in Jesus, who wipes every tear.

National Lutheran Schools Week at Zion Lutheran School wrapped with the students taping Mrs. Baron to the wall as a reward for reaching a fundraising goal – more than $600 dollars and change donated to buy supplies for a Lutheran school in Haiti. Our fearless leader was such a sport with the whole thing! The kids loved every single minute…and yes, she stuck to the wall, and didn’t fall down!

ReflectionsWhat a great school we have, there are so many people who try each and every year to bring out the best in Zion. This year we are trying something new to showcase our artists at Zion, we are going to publish a collective group of artwork from our students. The publication is going to be called “Reflections” because as sons and daughters of our great God we should reflect on His goodness and all of our blessings.

Each year our school has a theme and a bible verse or verses. This year’s theme is “One togeth-er” and the verses are Ephesians 4: 4-6 “There is one body and one Spirit---just as you were called to one hope when you were called---one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

The Reflections entries are open to 1st – 8th grades because Zion has amazing artists in each grade level.

Reflections rules are as follows:1. Student’s artwork has to reflect this year’s theme and/or bible verses.2. Submissions have to be original work from that student including poems, photography and artwork. Each student may submit two works of art. Ex: one poem and one photograph, or two poems etc. 3. The artwork must be on paper provided from the student’s teacher. (Publishing com-pany needs a certain paper weight.) Poems and photography will need to be emailed to Mrs. Shannon Leigh Hayes to be sent to the publishers in their required format. 4. Paper has to be clean, meaning no excessive erase marks, etc. The printing processes will pick-up all the flaws and smudges. If needed, practice on regular paper.5. No handwriting on artwork, it will not show up nicely during printing process.6. This is voluntary and the student will need to work on their project at home. 7. The student can use any medium of their choosing, example, pen and ink, pastels, water-color, acrylic, oils etc. These mediums will not be provided, just the paper.8. Make sure you include your entry form on your artwork, don’t staple or tape it to your pic-ture but paper clip it, that way the artwork is not damaged and the staple holes won’t show up during the printing process from the staples. 9. All works of art are due no later than March 14, 2016 so they can be published and hand-ed back before the end of the school year. 10. Each student will be responsible to deliver their artwork to the office in the morning before school starts (unless you are doing a poem or photography) there will be a special place for your artwork. 11. An announcement will be sent out to those students on March 16 whose artwork was cho-sen to be published. Lastly, the artwork publication “Reflections” will be for sale for $15 dollars. Please make your checks payable to Zion Lutheran School and in the note area of the check please write (Artwork Publications) give this along with the ORDER FORM to our wonderful office administrators. All orders must be in by March 22, 2016We truly believe that we have wonderful and gifted artist at Zion so I encourage everyone to be-lieve in themselves. Let’s make “Reflections” a true asset for our school and an annual tradition.

Sincerely,Mrs. Shannon Leigh Hayes
