Colonel Lion Charlie Cone, USAF, Retired We are proud of the many Lions who have served our country through the years and connue to serve on. Many of you may know PDG Charlie Cone for his leadership in District 11 A1, serving as Governor in 1994-95. He received the Michigan Outstanding District Governor Award as well as the District Governors Excellence award, awarded by LCI, and was a past recipient of the S.A. Dodge Award. Lion Joan Cone is equally as dedicated, having been awarded the Internaonal Presidents Leadership Medal in the past. Lion Charlie and Lion Joan are commied to service through the Plymouth Lions Club. Lion Charlie is also dedicated to the programs offered through Child and Family Services, such as Operaon Good Cheer. More than 4,900 recipients were “giſted” in 2013, thanks to pilots like Lion Charlie who volunteered their me to deliver 11,000 giſts to drop-off points around the state. His service to CFS spans 25 years. Learn more about this dedicated Lion by reading his personal story, in his own words. “I served in the US Navy from 2/22/1944 to 9/29/1949, entered pilot training upon graduaon from High School and became a Naval Aviator in 1947, geng “Wings of Gold” at Pensacola, FL. Assigned to a navy patrol squadron flying Marn Mariners (PBM- 5) out of Saipan Island. Saw the Great Wall of China in 1948 while flying reconnaissance missions over China during the Chinese revoluon. Flew out of Tsingao, China. Only a very small secon of the city was free, rest held by communists. This small secon was the only bit of land in enre China that was free. Our base consisted of one small building and a ramp for the aircraſt. The Chinese government had an execuon grounds behind our shack which was used periodically when individuals could not be, or were not, idenfied by free people as they were marched thru the streets. That was their trial. One shot through the head ended it. One interesng event occurred during my tour there – I was probably the first aircraſt ever shot at by a surface-to-air missile. Fortunately it missed us by a few feet lighng up the cockpit as it went by. We were not allowed to discuss the incident and I did not unl 1952. On August 31, 1949 my crew (11 men) was killed when they crashed in the ocean in heavy fog off San Diego. As a Patrol Plane Commander, I was assigned an aircraſt and crew. I was processing for discharge so was not on board, but my discharge was delayed so that I could do the inial idenficaon of the remains as they were recovered by divers. My roommate was among those killed. I accompanied his remains to his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where I met his longme girlfriend, who agreed to my proposal of marriage a few months later. We were married June 10, 1950. I switched my allegiance from the US Navy to the US Air Force just before we were married and my unit was in the first group called to acve duty for the Korean War. I flew B-26 light bombers for my tour of combat during that fracas. I heard our son’s voice for the first me when I called home while on R&R. It was quite a thrill! Aſter Korea I was awarded a scholarship to Ohio State University for my bachelor’s degree. Following that opportunity, I flew B-47 jet bombers for 5 years during the peak of the Cold War. Most interesng event of that me was my assignment as a commander of a bomber unit with bombs loaded and ready during the Cuban crisis. Following my tour with the B-47 squadron I given another scholarship to get a master’s degree at Texas A&M University. I was awarded the first degree in Computer Science given at TAMU in 1964. Aſter managing a very large computer complex I was assigned to fly B-66 jet reconnaissance aircraſt in Viet Nam. The day I completed my operaonal training for that assignment I was promoted to full Colonel and my orders were changed. I was next in charge of about 20 computer installaons in the US, followed by an assignment to Viet Nam to develop a highly classified system involving every aircraſt flying in the war from all naons and services. I flew a few combat missions and landed on a carrier 24 years aſter I first qualified on one when geng my Navy wings. I rered from the AF in 1973 aſter a couple of excing years changing the way the AF managed and used computers. Now was my opportunity to direct an upgrade of computer systems for AAA Michigan. I was with AAA when I joined the Northwest Detroit Lions Club. upcoming events For mail returns see ID statement. Creating new possibilitiesfor sight restoration

The Lions Clubs International Foundation and Lions of District 11-B1 joined together to fund a new digital slit lamp imaging module for the Michigan Eye-Bank laboratory. This new technology will allow lab staff to view the number and health of the corneal cells and layers at a microscopic level to determine suitability for transplantation. It also allows users to capture still images and high resolution video on a cellular level to share with surgeons, which is crucial to ensuring the health and safety of their patients.

PDG Barry Allen with the Michigan Eye-Bank Laboratory Manager Kim Traczyk.

Thank you to all Lions Clubs of Michigan for supporting YOUR Eye-Bank…The Michigan Eye-Bank.
