What is a Keyword?

A keyword, in the context of LinkedIn profile optimization, is a particular word or phrase that describes a major skill or experience used by recruiters or other LinkedIn members to search LinkedIn for members that may fill their need.

How to Find Keywords

Growing Your Contacts

Three Level of Contacts

1st Level = your direct contacts

2nd Level = your direct contact’s contacts that aren’t your contacts.

3rd Level = weak ties one level below your 2nd Level contacts (only available to premium users)

1st – 3rd Level is considered your “Network”

Regardless contact level, the members of groups you belong to are visible and contactable

Two Schools of Thought

Conservative model – only connect with people you know and maybe even recommend to others.

Those who feel life doesn’t begin before they have at least 500 LinkedIn contacts

Finding Contacts Getting started: LinkedIn will search your

email accounts for addresses of existing members and display a list for you select who to send an invitation to connect.

LinkedIn will start providing lists of members you might know based on your 2nd Level and Group contacts.

If you’re open to large contact bases – you’re considered an “Open Networker,” and there are groups and lists you can use to expand your contacts

Other Ways to find Contacts

Meetups and conferences

Website and other social media hyperlinks back to your LinkedIn profile

Placing your custom LinkedIn URL on your business cards

Non-profit activities and professional associations

Alumni gatherings

Contact Limits Maximum of 30,000 contacts – start with a

limit of 3,000 and ask for new limit increments from customer service

Avoid the dreaded Report Spam – when you send requests to connect with someone who feels you’re as bad as a Nigerian spammer/scammer.
