The year 2005 is decidedly a banner year forMusicLink. Not only have we accomplished sub-
stantial goals set four years ago when we first grewinto a non-profit, but we also are bubbling with antic-ipation as we revamp programs and set new, loftygoals for the long-range future.
First and foremost—we did it! We reached ourAmerica’s Promise Commitment goals before the endof 2005.
• 100,000 hours of volunteer instructional timeby MusicLink teachers
• $2 million in scholarship donation from teachers and sponsors
• 2005 students taughtnationally throughthe program
Who would have everrealized that the simple ideaof linking a deserving stu-dent with a caring teachercould reach so far andaccomplish so much? Thesignificance of these num-bers shows that the programcan reach every corner of the country and beyondthrough solid networking with musical colleagues andbusiness partners.
We enjoyed a taste of that solid networking at ourfirst MusicLink Foundation National Summit, held atGeorge Mason University in Fairfax ,VA in July 2005.Thanks to a generous grant from the Jack Kent CookeFoundation, (story on page 4), we were able to bringregional, state, and local coordinators from across thecountry together for an exciting weekend of sharedexperiences, training sessions, and strategic planning.
Of course, the summit closed with a wonderful recitalof MusicLink students from many different states andeven Mexico.
The active engagement of dedicated teachers,coordinators, and business partners truly energized allinto action. After a quick jaunt into DC to see thesights, everyone left committed to seek ways to reachmore students and teachers in each of their states andcommunities.
We thank George Mason University for the beau-tiful setting for our meetings and the use of theCenter for the Performing Arts for our concert. Wethank Jordan Kitt's Music for sponsoring our lovely
luncheon. We are honoredthat the Jack Kent CookeFoundation has chosen toprovide significant supportfor our cause, realizing thevalue of our mission to nur-ture promising students inneed through music.
We are ready to revampand simplify our program,reach new states, and finan-cially secure the growth ofthe program with the help
of donors, grantmakers, and our business and corpo-rate sponsors.
Amidst the flurry of new activity, increases in stu-dent registrations, database and website development,we still pause each time we receive a photo of a newteacher and student or read the comments of a caringteacher on a student evaluation form. The value ofthat simple link = MusicLink.

IN GRANTS
MusicLink received a grant totaling$81,000 from the Jack Kent Cooke
Foundation to train its coordinators,develop long-term planning and expand itsoperations to new areas of the country.
“We are thrilled to be able to expandour program through this grant, and reachhundreds more promising students whocrave music lessons but cannot afford them.This funding will allow our networking sys-tem to link with more volunteer teachers toprovide ongoing instruction to these stu-dents for as long as they wish to learn,” saidDr. Joanne Haroutounian.
The MusicLink Foundation is one ofa handful of pipeline organizations assist-ing the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation seekout eligible students for several of theirscholarship programs. Through its nation-wide network of teachers, students andbusiness partners, MusicLink will help“From the Top,” a weekly radio programfeaturing the country’s top student musi-cians, identify talented young musicianswhose financial background qualify themfor one of the program’s 25 scholarshipsworth $10,000. MusicLink will alsoencourage qualified 7th grade students toapply for the Jack Kent CookeFoundation’s Young Scholars Program,which offers $8,000 scholarships.
In addition to this grant, the HerbBlock Foundation of Washington DCalso awarded a $2,500 grant toMusicLink.
YAMAHA CLAVINOVAFESTIVALS PARTNERWITH MUSICLINK
We are pleased to announce a newpartnership with Yamaha
Clavinova Festivals that will provide waysto promote the program to many newteachers as well as raise funds forMusicLink programs nationwide. LoriFrazer is working with Susan Ogilvy and
Joanne Haroutounian to connectPromise to Practice events prior toClavinova festivals scheduled across thecountry during the 05–06 school year.
Students of teachers who havesigned up for the festivals
“promise to prac-tice” a certainnumber of hoursfor one week inthe monthprior to the fes-
tival. They collectpledges from friends and
family of so many dollars per hour ofpractice for the week. As a reward forachieving their practice goal, MusicLinksends a “success” pin to each student andtote bags for any student who has raisedover $100 for MusicLink. Each teacherthat takes part in Promise to Practice alsogets a tote bag.
Foster Family Music in BettendorfIowa was the first dealer to initiateClavinova Festivals. It is fitting that thismusic store is also initiating the newClavinova-MusicLink partnership thismonth, with teachers enjoying a week ofsolid practice by students prior to the fes-tival through our Promise to Practice idea.We look forward to sending pins and totebags to students across the country!
FIRST NATIONAL SUMMITA RESOUNDING SUCCESS
The MusicLink Foundation held itsfirst national summit July 15-17 at
George Mason University in Fairfax,Virginia. Thanks to a grant from the JackKent Cooke Foundation, MusicLinkregional coordinators, teachers and stu-dents from across the country, and evenMexico, convened to hear panel discus-sions, to receive training and pointers onlinking with schools, students and busi-nesses and to share ideas.
Regional coordinators met with thefoundation’s board of directors and plan-ning consultant, Marianne de Barbierion Friday for a strategic planning session
to determine the organization’s trajectoryfor the next few years.
Summit participants attended sever-al panels on Saturday morning. Theyheard regional coordinators MaryHulme, Sue Wege and Kate Jeannottespeak about how to get MusicLink upand running. Mika Inayoue, MarthaSmith, Elizabeth Hotstetter, andKathryn Ryan discussed how to reachout to the community. Students MiguelEspinoza Chavez and Diana Fang spokeabout their experiences with MusicLinkand how they have benefited from theprogram while Cesar Corado andEmanuel Fang offered their perspectivesas parents of MusicLink students.Representing the Arlington, VA, publicschools and local music businesses respec-tively, Carol Erion, Bruce Andersonand Jim Edmunds talked about howMusicLink coordinators and teachers canbuild partnerships with the scholastic andbusiness communities.
Eleven current and formerMusicLink and LessonLink students gavea recital in the university’s Center for theArts on Saturday afternoon. The programranged from piano solos and duets to vio-lin and vocal performances. Thanks to apartnership with Jack Kent Cooke,MusicLink will serve as a pipeline organ-ization to seek very talented studentsfrom its own ranks and will function as aresource for talented students seeking theYoung Artist Scholarship or YoungScholars Program offered by the JackKent Cooke Foundation. Perhaps someof MusicLink’s most talented studentsmay be featured on the radio program,“From the Top” through these scholar-ship opportunities. Southwest RegionalCoordinator Gail Fischler offered thesummit’s final session on teaching at-riskstudents.

Student OvercomesAsperger’s Syndrome toExcel in Piano and ChoirBy Carole Lindell-Ross
A s a sixth grader, Mike Brown, ofLake Oswego, Oregon, believed he
would never learn to read music. Now 15years old and a sophomore in high school,Mike is a Leonard Method Books Level 4pianist who not only sightreads music butalso sight sings as an “A” music student.
Under the piano tutelage of CaroleLindell-Ross for four years, Mike hasbenefited from a dedicated partnershipforged by his high school choral teacher,Liz Sera, and his junior high choir direc-tor, DeeAnn Sands.
Mike recently earned his first GoldCup Trophy in piano theory at Festival,successfully auditioned as a tenor for theLake Oswego High School a cappellachoir for the fall and performed pianosolos at Festival, retirement centers and15 student recitals. He will solo with theLO Choir at Disneyland in Anaheim,California, during Memorial Day week-end in May for a choral workshop.
Mike said that the Leonard notespeller series through MusicLink, alongwith the one-on-one attention of hispiano teacher, helped him make suchprogress. He recalled that he was almosttwo years into piano lessons when he real-ized his capability to read basic pianonotation independently had turned intoreality. The joy of such achievement wasreflected in Mike’s school work and hisself-esteem, according to his mother,Becky Lukens.
Mike lives with his mother andgrandmother, Georgianna Lukens, whocontacted Carole for weekly lessons. Shebelieved that Mike’s innate musicalitycould be reached through individual les-sons. Mike’s untrained tenor voicereminded her of her own brothers’ voices,both of whom had excelled in vocalmusic. One was even a scholarship stu-dent as the lead tenor in the Yale GleeChoir in the 1960s.
Before he could read music, Mikeused his voice to learn the music pitchesduring private piano lessons. He startedwith simple linear selections from HalLeonard Publications as well as from the
Federated Music lists. At the time, twofingers on his left hand suffered fromnerve damage, but gradually, during fouryears of repeated pentascales and single-handed playing, Mike developed use ofall his fingers. While playing chords withboth hands still causes difficulty, Mike isable to play Diabelli & Turk.
I had never before taught autistic chil-dren nor had any special training in work-ing with autism, but I learned how toinstruct Mike during the course of twoyears when his mother would attend les-sons with him. I believed in Mike’s abilityto use his voice to unlock the music insidehim. We both enjoy Mike’s good-humoredpersonality and his can-do attitude, whichkept us both motivated during the longprocess to read and write music. His abili-ty to laugh at his mistakes and then to tryagain are lessons for all of us.

HATS OFF to MusicLink’s 2005 Graduates
Stephanie Bucknellgraduated fromAustin High Schooland has also complet-ed her AssociateDegree from RiverlandCollege in Austin,Minnesota, through the post secondaryoption available to Minnesota highschool students. She has been aMusicLink piano student of JuneTorrison in Le Roy, Minnesota, for severalyears. She successfully completed severalMMTA Theory and ComprehensivePiano Exams and the Music Bridges pro-gram. She is currently a nursing studentat the College of St. Scholastica inDuluth, Minnesota.
Chau Do graduatedwith high honorsfrom Edmonds-Woodway HighSchool, in Edmonds,Washington. She cur-rently attends the
University of Washington on scholarships.Chau studied piano for five years,
three as a MusicLink student withCarolyn Malnes, who took her to per-formances by the Seattle Symphony andPacific Northwest Ballet. During herMusicLink studies, Chau participated inpiano performance master lessons, tookthe state theory tests and wrote composi-tions for the Washington State YoungComposers Project.
Chau loves to listen to music of alltypes and enjoys playing the piano forfun and relaxation. Some of her highschool activities included the tennisteam, International Club, and theNational Honor Society. She also volun-teered as a teacher’s assistant at CollegePlace Middle School.
Bryant Norlandgraduated from LogosAcademy in Creswell,Oregon. He currentlyattends NorthwestChristian College and
plans to major in computer science.Bryant took piano lessons from VirginiaBuhn and completed Level X, the high-est level of the piano syllabus program ofthe Oregon Music Teachers Association,in addition to performing in solo recitalsand a two-piano concert of Gershwin’sRhapsody in Blue.
Bryant is also an accomplishedtrumpeter. He served as principal trum-pet for the Eugene Youth Symphony, theLogos Academy Symphonic Band andthe All State Honor Band.
Bryant continues his trumpet studiesat the University of Oregon and utilizeshis piano training as an accompanist forcommunity and church events.
Tony Song graduat-ed from WestviewHigh School innorthwest Portland,Oregon. He is cur-rently a student atthe University ofHouston, studying with Nancy Weemsand is scheduled to perform the BrahmsConcerto No.2 with Portland’s ColumbiaSymphony next April.
While in Portland, Tony studiedpiano for nine years with Kelli BrownStephens, accumulating many awards.He performed as a concerto soloist withthe Young Artist at the Schnitz (2000 and2003), with the Vancouver (USA)Symphony, the Linfield ChamberOrchestra and the Oregon Sinfonietta.An active chamber musician, Tony alsoperformed with the Miami StringQuartet as a Chamber Music NorthwestYoung Artist Fellow.
As a recipient of a MusicLink campscholarship this summer, Tony enjoyedthe opportunity to attend the AspenMusic Festival where he studied pianowith Yoheved Kaplinsky and was a win-ner of a concerto competition whichresulted in a performance of the BrahmsConcerto No.1 with the AcademyOrchestra for a master class with LeonFleisher.
Svetlana Stadnikgraduated as valedic-torian of her class atWalla Walla HighSchool in WallaWalla, Washington.She received a scholar-
ship to attend Washington StateUniversity, where she is completing herfirst semester studies.
Svetlana began taking lessons fromMarcia Wilke during the summerbetween her 8th and 9th grade years ofschool. Her teacher wrote that studentstypically signed up for one weekly lessonfor seven weeks, but Svetlana was so anx-ious to learn that she signed up for theentire 21 lessons. When Svetlana beganher senior year in high school, she askedher teacher if she could be a scholarshipstudent in order to assist in her family’sfinancial situation. She has four youngerbrothers, two of whom are close in age to her. This arrangement enabled her parents to save money to help her go tocollege.
Her teacher writes that she misseshaving Svetlana, one of her best students,in her studio.
Anousheh Shayestehpour graduatedfrom H-B Woodlawn in Arlington, VAand is now a full time student atNorthern Virginia Community College.A MusicLink piano student of JoLombard until 2004, Anousheh contin-ues her ninth year of piano with her cur-rent instructor, Jeanne Lowe. Anoushehalso studied voice through MusicLinkwith Peggy McNulty for four years,Anousheh continues to sing in both theNOVA chorus and the SpringfieldChorale. Anousheh plans to transfer intoa four-year college and eventually enterlaw school, while continuing her musicalcareer, in piano, voice, and violin as well.

Setting Goals for the FutureThe “plus one” campaign asks donors to link with our chain of teacher volunteers and sponsors to build MusicLink
programs in communities across the country. What better way to recognize a family member, friend, or special music teacherthat made a difference in your life than to see your contribution directly benefit a program that nurtures the musical growth ofpromising youth.
