This holiday season, I have been busy making the rounds to attend various holiday bazaars and Christmas expos to learn more about, and introduce myself to, fashion, accessory and beauty brand vendors. My goal, along with other editors, is finding new products, items and collections to highlight or feature in upcoming issues.

I make my way around to meet each vendor and will usually find a gift or two for myself and others. I request business cards so that I can view other items that may not be currently available at their table (as they were allotted only so much room). There is such a delight in the air, with a festive spirit abound in full anticipation for Christmas morning.

Back in the office, with my mouse at the ready, I scan the first business card in search of the web address to begin my research.

[INSERT CRINGE HERE] Ugh. It’s the moment that happens way too often and is what editors dislike the most. It is what causes editors to let out a loud ’WTF’ at editorial meetings. The major cringe factor is – The Unprofessional and Visually Unappealing Business Card.

1. Glossy finish. Both sides. Why? Matte is all you need. Editors usually note where they met you on the back of your business card. This is useless if their pen slides over it.

2. Small font. Like real small. I can’t read the contact name, website or the email address. An editor should never need reading glasses and a magnifying glass to reach you.

3. No real website (but a social media page is provided). You should NEVER direct editors and potential buyers to a social media platform in order to view your brand/product. With a unified shout of ‘WTF!” editors will throw your card in the trash. With so many free website building sites, there is no excuse. Why would anyone invest in you when YOU have not?

4. Inappropriate email address. Simply put, an editor should never have to email ‘[email protected]’ to inquire about your fashion collection. NEVER.

How much you invest in your business card WILL make the difference in receiving an email from an editor or not. Entrepreneurs, its a good thing it’s almost 2016!. Let’s resolute to do business better. There is still time to check out a new website templates and get that new business email going.
