Specialist Degree Preparation
The International Year One is a programme o academic
subjects, study skills and English language training
designed specically to prepare international students or
undergraduate study.
Depending on your academic and English levels,
you can join a three term, three and a hal term or our
term programme.
All programmes oer a direct path to the second year o
an undergraduate degree meaning that you could
complete your degree course in just three years.
Study Structure
You can choose one o ve International Year One routes:

All routes are modular in structure, with core modules and
subject-specifc modules careully designed to ocus on
the academic area most useul to your chosen degree.

AssessmentYou will be assessed regularly throughout your course to
ensure you remain on track to achieve the standard
required or progression to your degree.

Media Studies Programme Structure
Core Subjects
English and Skills or University Study 1
(4 term programme only), 2 and 3Over these modules you will develop your English
communication skills and learn a range o study skills,
including writing and reading strategies, presentation and
seminar participation, organisation o time and materials,
meeting deadlines and responding to eedback.
At the end o these modules you will be able to
use the English language in your academic work,
give well-structured presentations, condently
answer ollow-up questions and contribute to seminar
discussions. You will be able to take notes rom readings
and lectures, plan, develop and write well-structuredacademic essays and be condent in sel-directed
learning strategies.
Improved Reading and Academic Vocabulary
(4 term only)
Reading academic texts can be dicult this module
will make it easier. It will improve your understanding
o academic words and help you to use them in your
own work.
Applied Academic Writing Skills
This module will urther develop your writing fuency and
accuracy. You will have the opportunity to apply the skills
you have learnt to an extended academic essay.
You will work on ve short texts over the 10 week
programme to make sure you are well practised in using
your new skills.
Route-specifc Modules
Script, Screenwriting and Realisation
In this module, you will learn about the basics o narrativetheory and storytelling or screen-based media. You will
use a theoretical ramework to develop your own creative
writing and visual style and will have the opportunity to
produce a short lm script and its audio visual ullment.
Production Planning
You will develop an awareness o the production
techniques used in production planning using camera
studio methods. You will have the opportunity to develop
practical skills in television production and produce
a multi-camera production that demonstrates a
culmination o your knowledge and skills.
Principles o Film and Television 1 and 2
You will gain an understanding o the key theoretical
rameworks and critical vocabulary or the study o lm
and television. Develop a high level o visual literacy
through an in-depth study o the language o lms.
You will be able to understand the relationship between
lm producer, lm star and audience.
Milestones in Media: History 1 Hollywood
in Context
This module examines the dening aesthetic, economic
and technological characteristics o Hollywood cinema.
You will be able to show how the use o concepts such
as genre, stardom and authorship have been used by
dierent groups and how they relate to historical and
cultural trends.
Media and Interpretation 1 and 2
You will examine the key concepts and critical
approaches that inorm studies o media production
and consumption. The role and impact o technological
change to media production and consumption in thecontext o a global mass-media market is also discussed.
Milestones in Media: History 2 Beyond Hollywood
This module explores the historical development o
cinema outside o the United States. You will be able to
dene the cinematic practices outside o the Institutional
Mode o Representation and the global entertainment
industry and will develop an understanding o the social,
political and cultural contexts in which European cinema
developed.

The Lincoln School o Media oers undergraduate
courses designed to prepare you or employment in the
media, creative and cultural industries.
Sta in the School are passionate about their subjects
and between them have more than 350 years o media
industry experience in a wide range o areas.
Facilities
You will have access to the state-o-the-art digitally
integrated production environment in the MediaBroadcast Production Centre. Facilities include two
television studios, one o which has recently undergone
almost 500,000 investment in HD camera technology,
sound studios, eight editing suites, digital media labs and
photographic studios. There are outstanding audio
production acilities, including our radio production
studios, six audio edit suites and a new dubbing theatre
and a Foley (sound eects) suite.
Opportunities are available to gain experience at Siren
FM, the community radio station based at the University,
which broadcasts to the Lincoln area and urther aeldvia the internet.
Throughout the year, the University hosts a programme
o guest lectures rom high-prole members o the
proession. Past speakers have included Senior Vice
President o Warner Brothers Rick Senat, ormer head o
the Radio Academy Trevor Dann, and acclaimed
lm-makers Nick Gray and Neil McKay.
International Exchanges
There are opportunities or Media students to take part in
exchanges with international institutions in the US and in
Europe.
Research
There is an impressive research record rom sta within
the Lincoln School o Media on a range o topics in
practice and theory areas. In the most recent Research
Assessment Exercise 70% o research was ranked as o
international standing.
Sta regularly contribute to publications and give keynote
speeches at conerences around the world. The Schoolhosts the award-winning Televising History project.
Student Success
Graduates rom the University o Lincoln have won prizes
our years running at the Royal Television Society (RTS)
Awards or work they produced whilst students. Most
recently, a team rom the Media Production programme
were nominated or the much-coveted prize in the Fiction
category o the RTS Midlands Awards, or their lm
