William Robinson, MD, Medical Director, performs endovascular repair for peripheral artery disease.
Peripheral Artery Disease
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) causes blockage in
the arteries. The result is a decrease in blood flow.
PAD may be caused by smoking, diabetes, high
cholesterol and high blood pressure.
Approximately 8 million Americans have PAD. Talk
to your doctor if you have pain in your legs while
walking, pain in your feet at rest, or if you have a
sore on your leg. These may be signs of PAD.
Patients can reduce the risk of plaque build-up by:
•Quitting smoking (smokers are 10 times more
likely to develop PAD)
•Managing blood sugars, blood pressure and
cholesterol as recommended by your doctor
•A lifestyle of regular exercise and healthy diet
Diabetes
Diabetes affects 25.8 million Americans. Diabetes
can cause changes in circulation, decreased sensation
and changes in structure of the foot. These changes
can cause a foot ulcer. If not treated promptly, ulcers
can easily become infected and lead to the need for
amputation.
What you Can do to Prevent Limb Loss
•Check the top and bottom of your feet and
between toes daily for changes, blisters or callous
•Never go barefoot
•Wear clean socks and well-fitted shoes
•See a podiatrist for regular foot care
•Don’t cut your own nails or callous
•Don’t smoke
•Control your blood sugar
The UMass Memorial Limb Preservation Center (LPC) is dedicated to patients at risk of limb loss due to Peripheral Artery Disease and Diabetes.
75% of amputations are due to
diabetes. Early detection and treatment
is critical to limb preservation.
