    My project has been a study of the identity of a changing city. By researching and critiquing the city of Christ-church, my project has been presented as an architectur-al solution within a larger urban strategy.

    In the past three years, the city has been in a state of flux, changing between the original 1860s city plan, the earthquake destroyed city, and the councils proposal for future Christchurch. The council has proposed a city plan that reasons to deurbanize the CBD into a tenth of the original, and wrap a green belt around it. This green belt will be a piece of flat park with some buildings scattered along it. But the L belt has so much more room for potential. My urban strategy aims to hybridise the three conditions. Instead councils proposal for an empty green belt, I propose a strategy where the amount of green area is kept, but now there is enough density for a secondcity to co-exist with the old.

    From the city looking out into the suburbs, the illusion of a green belt is represented by the slanted green roofs of the L belts mass. The angle of the slant lifts your eyes up into the mountains in the distance. From the suburb looking into the city, the silhouette of the old city skyline shapes the faade so that no matter what changes with-in the city, the memory of the old remains.

    Christchurch is the city of churches. With a city plan that physically centres around a cathedral in the middle, the cathedral is the citys identity. Upon arrival into this city, the media cathedral is waiting to greet newcomers. Situated at the corner of the L belt, the media cathedral becomes the main gateway into Christchurch. The archi-tecture stands on both sides of the road, creating a split that frames a view from either side. From the suburbs you will be looking straight into the heart of the city. From the city, you will be looking up into the mountain ranges in the distance. As people enter and exit the city, they travel through the underside of the cloud with col-umns that create an architectural canopy like space and cladded with rose stained glass. It aspires to recreate and reinterpret the act of looking up in a cathedral.

    CARDINIA: CITY OF REFUGEThis project is conceptual imagination of a city of refuge. It is set in a future scenario where the population of Cardinia grows immensely as more immigrants arrive to reside in this town. This project is a conceptual interpretation of what a new city of multi-culture would aesthetically look like.

    Unification is not every culture coming together to create a brand new culture, but it is a mixture of a bit of every culture coming together. Where every culture can place their input My architecture is a hybrid of recognizable cultural forms, in hopes of creating a home away from home for the new residents. A place where people can meet and experi-ence different cultures in a condense area.

    The journey to unification is a long uphill climb. This is physically represented in my residential spine starts from the entry corner and slowly climbs its way up. At the start it is a scattered form, which then cluster tightly together as it climbs to the top of the voluminous city.

    UNIFICATION OF CULTURE #2 Joining dierent architec-tural forms from dierent cultures.

    The unication of culture is not an act of mixing to create something homoge-nous, but rather taking bits and pieces from dierent cultures and putting them together to create a hybrid.

    I was looking at how I could create Expatriate Architec-ture. An Expat is someone who moves from country to country, and each time they take a bit of the culture with them to their new destina-tion. In the end, they are a combination of dierent bits of culture from dierent countries they lived in. They identify with each country they lived in. The unication of culture is within that person.

    Therefore I have tried to create an architectural form that has distinct personali-ties from distinct cultures/countries.

    I will test out how the dier-ent forms join to create interesting moments

Our proposal is for a small self-sustaining city block that joins work play and live. The idea is to plant this prototype then allow it to grow and spread throughout the city.

    The work play live scheme allows people to access all three within walking distance from destination to destination. These three functions have been connected together with green paths that cut across the site and multifunctional blocks that overlap the different functions. Our site is located within the green belt. The green belt reinforces the Christchurch reputa-tion of being the Garden City. But instead of just a green empty piece of land, our proposal is for architecture and green to have a symbiotic relationship. The building masses within the block were derived from solar analysis and the many solar studies. The forms have been morphed and angled to optimize solar access on its surface. The building form is cut in the middle to create a central gar-den to bring more light into the middle of the building, and to connect to the green path.

    The Apartments have been placed in the floor plan, then using points at the edges of the rooms, the floor plan has been morphed and altered to receive more sunlight. This makes the floor plan different on each level, and thus effecting the exterior facade design.

    Moving the position of these points to morph the basic cube into faceted and tapered forms. I can generate a grasshopper script that morphs the cube to optimize solar radiation on its surfaces, or morph it so that no direct sunlight can enter the space within. The more points the cube has, the more facets the result will be.

    APPLICATION ON SITE AND PLAN

    ECOTECT SOLAR ANALYSIS

    The new CCDU plan shows precincts dedicated to different types of function. But does the new city plan for Christ-church need to be zoned this way? Or zoned at all? Our proposal is for a small self-sustaining city block that joins work play and live. The idea is to plant this prototype then allow it to grow and spread throughout the city.

    The work play live scheme allows people to access all three within walking distance. These three functions have been connected together with green paths that cut across the site. Our site is located within the green belt. The green belt reinforces the Christchurch reputation of being the Garden City. But instead of just a green empty piece of land, our proposal is for architecture and green to have a symbiotic relationship.The building masses within the block were derived from solar analysis and the many solar studies. The forms have been morphed to optimize solar access on its surface. The building form is cut in the middle to create a central garden to bring more light into the middle of the building, and to connect to the green path.

    The theme of water has been a huge influence on the design. The aim was to create a ferry terminal that not only lets water bound transport come and go, but interactsand integrates the flow of water into the design. The vertical and horizontal shift of the design process has been made to deal with the water of our site and function.

    The transport programs of the design have been elevated above water to withstand the rise of sea level in the future. Studies have shown that by the year of 2100 the sea level will rise by a minimum of 80cm. The design is to envision the distant future, a design that will overcome the obstacle of future sea level increase.

    One of the main features of the design is the canal that cuts through the site to make a new way for ferries and boats. There are many smaller canals that cut through the land and connect with this larger canal. This large canal divides the design into two parts; The Edge and the Islands.

    I have designed an active dyke for the edge of the site. This is to prevent the sinking and erosion of land from the in-crease in sea level. I have designed architecture around and above the dyke to activate this edge. I envision the edge to be an active and busy space. With the local ferry terminal and transport hub along the edge, tens of thousands of peo-ple will be transitioning through this space to get to theirdestination.

    The islands are a place of destination. By elevating the transport programs of the design, I have left the space underneath to become and host activities of leisure.The international ferry terminal will only be used for a couple of days out of the year, most days the terminal will be empty. Therefore a market was designed to activatethis area of the design. To create a place of destination that people are drawn to

    EMERGING SAIGON Saigon is a lively city. The density of this city is displayed in the way people live, work, eat and sleep. The amount of space is scarce, and every space has a multiple function. This design was inspired from the Vietnamese shophouse typol-ogy. The shophouse typology is popular because residents can run businesses and community activities on ground level, and use the space above for living. My design creates a communal living space above ground on the rooftop level, where many households can share facilities and create social interaction above ground level.

    This design was inspired from the shop houses in Saigon, and bringing those typologies back into Southbank. The ground floor is an active market space for people to gather and carry out their daily shopping and socialising. This is to create a more active ground level that Southbank is lacking. The higher levels are for residential purposes. Much

    like the shophouses in Saigon, the living is above ground and the shops are on ground level. Due to the larger plot of land in southbank, the idea of the small asian shophouse has expanded and been made to suit the size of land plots in Melbourne.

    SOUTHBANK SHOPHOUSE

    Taking influences from Saigons shop-house typology, a res-idential tower was designed in Southbank. The architectural form lifts off the ground to create an open market space for the public to gather and carry out their daily shopping and socializing needs. This is to create a more active ground level that Southbank is lacking. Much like the shop-houses in Saigon, the residential is above ground and the shops are on ground level. The influence of the shop-houses was to bring more amenities into the streetscape of Southbank, and recreate the density witnessed in Saigon.
