Written by Christie BlizzardInterior Design and TV Presenter

www.christieblizzard.com

A regular presenter on Channel Ten series, The Renovator- Christie is a specialist in Australia’s children’s playrooms and nurseries- a designer who is fostering

creativity in children from an early age and encouraging parents and children to collaboratively work together to help their collective visions come to life.

Top 10 Tips for creating the perfect space for your little one without breaking the bank.

1. Keep it simple and add playful decadence!A neutral colour palette is the key to a great child’s room because you can subtly or dramatically change the room by adding cost-eff ective accessories like bed linen, cushions and throws.

2. Something New. Not just Pink and Blue Paint is your best friend. Use it. Don’t be scared. It’s cost-eff ective, has loads of impact and can be modifi ed over time. Think outside the square and embrace some new not-so-predictable shades. A playful orange tone is a hit with both genders and very on-trend is monochrome - so black and white is great for both boys and girls too. If you’re not sure about making such a bold statement, a feature wall is a great way to inject some colour into a room while still playing it safe. To do this, simply map out your artwork on the wall using a soft lead pencil and get ready to splash some colour!

TOP 10 TIPS FOR DECORATING YOUR

KIDS ROOM ON A BUDGET

WITH CHRISTIE

BLIZZARD

LILY Online Magazine

‘Creativity starts from an early age. It’s a time to build creative confi dence and celebrate our children’s BIG imaginations using a stylised selection process. If I gave my children the opportunity to completely redecoration their rooms they would wake up in a bouncy castle (not ideal to complement the rest of the home). The idea is to select pieces that interest our children and create accents within their space. It’s a beautiful process.’

010

3. Growth Spurt! There’s a lot of paraphernalia that comes with kids so good storage is essential. Invest in something that can adapt as your child grows with shelves, drawers and hanging space so you can hide the contents behind closed doors.

4. Wall Stickers.Create an artistic focal point in the nursery with wall stickers. When they’ve served their purpose they can be removed easily and you won’t have to repaint the wall. Love Mae is a charming online store which has a great selection of fabric wall stickers – we’re particularly drawn to the ‘Little Critters” and “Floating Feathers’ designs. I also LOVE the team at Urban Walls and Vivid Wall Decals too. Lots of simple options here that don’t lock you into a themed room.

5. Upcycle.Markets and garage sales provide a day out for parents and children to explore charming pieces that can be brought back to life. I recently sourced a beautiful wicker bedside for $4, sprayed it with gold spray paint and has become a beautiful signature piece for the home!

6. Frame it.Art can be found anywhere. Special wrapping paper, tea towels or big sister’s painting. Diff erent sized frames will add texture and dimension to the room and inspire conversation.

7. Layering effect.Have some fun with the bed and go OTT with throws, cushions and special toys which will add a punch of personality to their room.

8. Future-Proof. Future proofi ng their space and makes sure it can grows with them. If you buy a throw for your cot linen, be sure it will match what you have in mind when they jump into their “big kid bed”.

9. Budget Stretch.Make your budget go further by buying key pieces of furniture that are versatile. For example, many cot styles adapt into

junior beds and the right chest of drawers can double as a change table.

10. Blackboards. These are a novel way kiddies can draw on the walls (without being scolded). Select one wall to feature (ideally opposite the bed) and cover. Such a dramatic injection will capture your little one’s personality – and art can be updated each day... All you need is the chalk!

DOES SUMMER LEAVE YOU FEELING A LITTLE FRUITY?As summer rolls around for me every year, I take delight in walking through the

fresh produce section and the amazing smells of peaches, mangos and all things summer. I get inspired, I gain more “bounce” in my step and suddenly everything I touch has more energy and more flair.

Top Tips To get a Fruity Finish!

1) HEALTHY STARTAccent your child’s room with fruit, but don’t make your child’s room look like a fruit bowl. The idea is to inject freshness and fun into the room.

2) FRUIT SALAD Use these elements to match in with your existing pallet. For girls, consider the cherry print or a watermelon rug that works with what you already have. Make the fruit trend work for you.

3) BUY IN PAIRS To keep things consistent, use two fruit-themed items. Just one will have no purpose / balance in the room so always good to off -set it with another fruity fun piece.

TOP TIPS TO GET A FRUITY

FINISH WITH

CHRISTIE BLIZZARD

LILY Online Magazine

Summer for me is my favourite time of year and I love to extend this not just beyond the shopping trolley, but through the home too. It isn’t just a new cushion or a wardrobe cleanout. Summer for me is a time to update, pack away the old and add some vibrancy with the new. This season in particular I am excited because ... ‘Guess what is on the lips of all good designers?, Fruit! Yes, I said it, FRUIT! Here are some budget busting fi nds and some decedent delights to help you update your little one’s space and make it picture perfect for the silly

4) DON’T USE REAL FRUITAs tempting as it is, a bowl of lemons or apples just won’t go the distance. If you would like to consider real fruit as decor, be sure to keep them in a vessel that can be changed from time-to-time and is up high enough so your little one won’t eat the produce. If real fruit is a must, fi ll a vase with glorious green apples as a “sometimes” decoration, rather than chucking a fruit bowl on the desk.

5) DIY If you are crafty consider painting your own canvas or framing a fruit-inspired tea towel. If your child is old enough, make a day of it and have them create their own fruit-inspired wall art.

6) KEEP IT FRESHDon’t like fruit? If fruit just isn’t your thing, use the colours as inspiration and build from there. Reds, greens and yellows are very on-trend and can still give your child’s room a summer fl avour but won’t leave a bitter taste in your mouth.

7) BUDGET CONSCIOUS?Check out etsy.com there are so many gorgeous handmade options from some amazing artisans that will make your fruity palace unique.

8) WALL STICKERSThe fruit fad will give your space fabulous pops of colour and bring their room alive.

Using fun wall stickers (pineapples, apples, pears from places like Vivid Wall Decals) means you can make a statement without it being a permanent one. From just $25 you can give yourself a fun feature wall that can be removed when you need a new look.

9) OTTO- MOTTOMake your own ottoman. If you are lucky enough to have a great local vintage shop or an ability to track down items online, fi nd an old-fashioned fruit crate and make your own seat cushion using foam and strong, fruity colours which doubles as a storage box.

10) FRUITY TANGOThis gorgeous trend will inspire some amazing, fun spaces. That is the whole idea. Take risks with colour, be playful and enjoy this limitless fad before it is last season’s fl avour.

THE BEAUTYOF BUTTER

Information provided by Miss Nutrition WEBSITE: www.missnutrition.com.au

Reducing healthy sources of dietary fat has contributed to a serious decline in our well-being, and those of us that speak out against the anti-fat establishment are still largely ignored. Butter is a completely natural food essential to your health - especially when you eat organic.

Miss Nutrition is a specialist in Strength & Weight Training, HIIT Training and Circuits; a professional athlete and Fitness Super Model who is leading a movement to educate Australians about the importance Vitamins & Minerals and Nutrition has on everyday functioning. She invites you to learn about the BEAUTY OF BUTTER - (REAL BUTTER) and the role it takes in helping to protect hormones, insulate the body and nourish the skin.

BEAUTY OF BUTTER

1. High in Vitamin A – Great for hair, skin, nails, stomach, immune system, adrenals and

thyroid. Butter contains an extremely bioactive and well absorbed form of vitamin A.

2. High in CLA – Conjugated Linoleic Acid is known to be anti-cancerous and to a lesser

extent a fat burning agent.

3. Source of Palmitoletic Acid – A monounsaturated fat that is GREAT for the

heart and circulatory system, protects against infection through antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties.

4. Contains Butyric Acid –This little gem feeds our good gut bacteria. It also has anti-

cancer properties. Low levels of butyric acid in the gut mean our good stomach bacteria don’t thrive and we open ourselves up to infection from parasites, pathogens and increase our risk of things like ulcerative colitis, chromes disease, colon cancer and IBS.

5. High in Selenium – Selenium is super antioxidant. Crucial for thyroid, metabolism

and immune function.

6. Butter improves absorption of nutrients. Many vitamins and other nutrients are fat

soluble. This also means that in the absence of fat they WILL NOT be absorbed eff ectively by the body. Supplements and even fruits and veggies should ALWAYS be consumed with a fat source so you get the most out of them.

FOR TOO LONG HAS BUTTER BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A VILLAN IN THE QUEST OF GOOD HEALTH?

LILY Online Magazine044

7. Prevents Goiters – Iodine is crucial to many systems in the body especially for pregnant or

breastfeeding females. Butter is a great natural source.

8. Great for cooking – The fats in butter are very stable up to very high temperatures.

Cooking with fragile polyunsaturated oils oxidizes the fat in them which then causes ALL kinds of problems in the body.

9. Anti-Oxidants- Butter Contains anti-oxidants that protects against free radical damage.

10. Protector- Protects against gastrointestinal infections in the very

young or the elderly.

“ REDUCING HEALTHY SOURCES OF DIETARY FAT HAS CONTRIBUTED TO A SERIOUS DECLINE IN OUR WELL-BEING”

045

ASHLEY’S CLIENTS HAVE INCLUDED CHRISTINA AGUILERA, NATASHA BEDINGFIELD, MANDY MOORE AND RYAN GOSLING, THIS IS ONE TRAINER THAT KNOWS WHAT WORKS!The SOS food plan sounds like a great practical approach to meals can you tell us a bit about how you came across this concept?

I started the SOS food plan because of my own struggle with food and trying to find the “perfect diet”. News flash: there is no such thing. After treatment for a serious eating distorter in 1990, I emerged with a newfound respect for balanced eating, the concept of the S.O.S Food Plan was hatched. I found that using scales and measuring my food always made me feel crazy and I had to find a way to eyeball my food and find proper portions without hauling out my scale. I started to use fist and hand sizing to eyeball food and estimated portions and, It worked!

What are the main benefits to this approach?

Seeing whole foods on your plate (lean

proteins, vegetables, fruits, low glycemic carbs and good fats) in the category of hot, cold, colorful and crunchy is a basic tool I used to stop binging or over eating. Most people tend to binge on foods with no texture and the color of cardboard. Whole foods on your plate that combine the textures above helps you select foods rich in anti oxidants, fibre, protein and good carbs. The fibre and crunch slows down eating making you more satiated as you slowly eat.

How does this work with children and keeping meal times less complicated for mums wanting to try it?

The concept of meal time is very basic with colorful, whole food prepared for meals. It’s easy for mums to feed their brood while keeping their portion control in check without over thinking mealtime. If you are eating healthy and fresh foods, your children will benefit from the same food plan. Less sugar and refined white flower equals less hyper activity, better sleep and focus.

Whether it’s mentally attacking your partner for breathing too loudly or having to take two days off work to cope with the cramps from hell, research has shown that eight in every ten women experience PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome) symptoms of some kind. But the truth is that although PMS is very common, it’s actually not normal. Keep reading to discover what might be causing your PMS and how you can heal your period permanently. What causes PMS?According to the experts, there are four main categories of PMS:

Type A: The most common type of PMS aff ecting up to 80% of women, this category is defi ned as

being the ‘Anxiety’ form of PMS and includes mood swings, anxiety, tension and irritability.

Type C: Aff ecting up to 50% of women in the days before their period, Type C (for ‘Cravings’ includes

headaches, fatigue, increased appetite and yep – you got it - longing for sweet foods.

Type D: Labeled as the ‘Depression’ category, this type of PMS can be felt as depression,

loneliness, decreased co-ordination, clumsiness and forgetfulness.

Type H: This type of PMS manifests as a water imbalance or ‘Hyperhydration’. Aff ecting over

40% of women before their period, symptoms include bloating and weight gain, water retention and breast tenderness.

The key? Each of these forms of PMS is linked to hormonal imbalances. For Type A’s (the most common type of imbalance) the cause is excessive oestrogen and decreased amounts of progesterone. For Type D’s, the opposite is true with not enough oestrogen and excessive amounts of progesterone being the cause.

You can determine the exact hormonal imbalance(s) wreaking havoc with your period by visiting your naturopath and asking for a saliva test.

FIVE TIPS TO IMPROVE PMS SYMPTOMS

www.wh i tezebra .com

050

Until then, you can follow these five easy steps to support and nurture healthy hormonal balance:

1. Manage stressKnown as the ‘stress hormone’, cortisol is a

vital hormone secreted by your adrenal glands throughout the day. In small doses cortisol can have a positive influence on the body, but when excreted in higher and more prolonged doses, it can negatively impact your cognitive function, sleep patterns, blood pressure, thyroid function, blood sugar levels, bone density, immunity, abdominal fat and more.

And although cortisol doesn’t cause PMS directly, as cortisol production is favoured over progesterone even when oestrogen levels are normal, this sneaky stress hormone can actually manage to make PMS symptoms worse.

To help combat this reaction, you can actively engage in activities that calm and relax your nervous system. Our top five relaxation boosting activities are meditating, journaling, practicing yoga, creating a gratitude journal and spending time in nature.

2. Boost your intake of greensCruciferous and green veggies such as

broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, cauliflower and bok choy contain Indole-3-carbinol, which is a powerful agent used in detoxifying the liver and helping to process hormones along better pathways. Aim for a splash of greens in every meal and you’ll be well on your way to balanced hormones.

3. Eliminate processed foodsResearch has shown that simple carbohydrates

such as white bread and sugary snacks like croissants, cakes and cookies can increase PMS symptoms such as irritability and water retention.

As a general philosophy for happy hormones, our motto is to eat as close to what nature provides as possible. If you’re feeling stuck (and are really craving something sweet!), you can always try swapping a sweet treat for a healthy raw dessert. Check out the White Zebra blog for some easy dessert ideas.

4. Invest in your sleepIt’s now common knowledge in the medical

and wellness world that there is a symbiotic relationship between sleep and hormones. Hormonal imbalances can cause chaos with your sleep patterns and in the same way, disruptions to your sleep quality and length can negatively impact your hormone balance.

The secret to healing your hormones from the

inside out? Chomp down on magnesium rich foods like leafy greens, nuts and seeds, fish, whole grains, beans and lentils.

LILY Online MagazineYou can then follow it up with a relaxing sleep ritual that allows you to wind down at least an hour before bed. Next, aim for eight hours of quality sleep a night and you’ll see some positive changes in your health, energy levels and hormone balance before long.

5. Get help from an expertAnd finally, consider visiting a naturopath for

herbs or supplements to help improve your liver function. A naturopath can also help with herbs for managing stress, improving sleep quality and improving progesterone production.

Healing your hormones needn’t be a difficult task: with the right approach and mindset and by following the above tips you can start balancing your hormones and combating PMS almost immediately.

AN AUSSIE MADELABEL

WE INTERVIEW KERRY PIETROBON AS INSPIRING DESIGNER AND BUSINESS WOMAN ABOUT HER EDGY FASHION LABEL ‘HARLOW’ MAKING SIZES 12-24 FUNKY AND SEXY.

You started out working in the fashion industry, what was the catalyst to starting

your own business?

“I have had the good fortune to work with a variety of brands and retailers during my career. Professionally, Bellecurve which was initially sold in Myer, then Target, was a game changer for me. It made me realise I wanted to create and design fashion without the restraint of big business”.

“From my own personal experience I knew that there was a gap in the market that wasn’t being catered to – fashionable designer pieces in sizes 12 -24. It was rare to fi nd fashion forward clothes that translated from the runway to the rack for that market - I knew it because I was and still am that market.”

“We sat down one day and realised that it was time to take the leap - to back my vision. ‘Harlow’ was born after many sleepless nights,

and endless rounds of asking myself ‘am I nuts?’. Now I wonder why I waited so long.”

What are some of the pits and peaks of your experience?

“The pits and the peaks sometimes happen within minutes of each other.” Kerry explains. “The Peaks:

• Being able to create garments that you know make your clients feel amazing

• Having direct contact with your clients and hearing from them about what they like – they are the best market research and making them feel amazing is the reason we do what we do – each review we get makes my heart sing, it reminds me that we are on the right path

• Knowing that you are ultimately creating your future and having fun along the way

• Being stocked by stores who get our aesthetic and are willing to do something a little diff erent, it especially rocks our world when we get stores who have never stocked beyond a size 14 taking us on

• Being able to provide work for garment makers in Australia – we manufacture here and buy all

our trims and fabrications from local suppliers, some will say it’s not good business sense, but it’s something we pride ourselves on

“The Pits:

• Managing Cash fl ow - every business has this challenge. You need to be incredibly nimble to keep all your suppliers paid and your overheads in check.

• Isolation - often times it is just me in the studio. You need to schedule time for interaction or you get to the end of the week and realise you have not had one non business related conversation.

• Knock backs - it isn’t always smooth sailing. We are looking to grow our distribution into boutiques, because we know that our customer prefers a retail boutique experience – retail has been hard in the past few years and fi nding a place for something new is a bit of a risk for retailers in this climate, and so the knock backs are hard to take when you know you have a great product.

What are your goals for your business? What direction do you envisage your business

going? “Our vision is to continue to grow whilst continuing to off er our customers great fashion, and to one day have our own fl agship store. My love of fashion does not stop with clothes. I have a major love aff air with accessories, shoes, bags and especially jewellery. If you look at any of our styling you may be able to pick that up! I’d love to create afull line that embodies the ‘Harlow’ look. I am sure there are other women with the soul of a rock Chick out there - my goal is to fi nd them and ntroduce them to Harlow.”

If someone asked you for advice about starting a business like yours, what are your top 5 tips?

1. Plan - but not too much or you’d never do it

2. Your customers can be your biggest cheerleaders or your biggest critics - listen to their feedback and park your ego at the door

3. Cash is king - no matter how much you think you know about managing money, the fi rst year will teach you how little you know

4. Build a trusted group of advisers - be they your suppliers, friends or others who you respect. You need honesty and perspective from people you trust and have your best interest at heart – it truly does take a village.

5. Have faith in yourself and remember why you started this - was it to have fun? To have a better lifestyle? Whatever it is that started this odyssey for you check in occasionally and make sure it is still serving you.

AN ORGANICENTREPRENEUR

WE INTERVIEW AN INSPIRING WOMAN, NOELLE O’CONNOR DEMONSTRATES HOW DETIRMINATION AND COMMITMENT ARE THE KEY TO SUCCESS.

Tell me a bit about your product, Tan Organic, the organic nature of it and

the ethical side of the product?

TanOrganic is a certifi ed organic tanning product so when we set about developing the product I noticed that there were tans on the market that were claiming to be organic but when I did do some more research they weren’t actually organic, and they had some questionable ingredients in them. None of them were fully organic when they stated they contained organic ingredients. Our TanOrganic products are actually organic, so we started developing a formula that was certifi ed and actually good for your skin. Because we are 84% Aloe Vera based, the product is very moisturising. It took us about 18 months to get our eco certifi cation and we are now the fi rst and only certifi ed organic tanning in the world! 64% of what we put onto our skin can be absorbed to our skin so if we care about what we eat, we really should

care about what we put onto our skin. Our tan stays on the skin for 5-7 days so I really wanted to develop a product that was good for the skin and that was okay to leave on for long periods of time.

We also care about the protecting the skin against sun damage; we are a very ethical company. Our packaging is all in glass packaging and our packaging that we use for travel retail is in a PLA corn so we don’t use any petroleum or plastic. All our products are recyclable or the use of a sustainable packaging which is 100% compostable. We also donate a percentage of our profi ts to a charity called Trek stock, which raises funds for the awareness of cancer in teenagers, through fashion, music and art.

You started your career in the spa industry; can you talk about how

and why you made the shift?

I started as a beauty therapist; my fi rst business was a little room behind a hair salon that I opened with a 2000-pound credit junior loan. I built that to a successful chain of salons that I was about to sell out in 2008 before the Irish economy crash. How I made the shift was having my own salons to being a distributor because I was very much into natural products.

LILY Online Magazine058

I was the fi rst person in Ireland to bring the concept of mineral makeups into Ireland. Followed by distribution I started sourcing products but then I started to see that they could be better so I then continued with my own brand that was exactly what I wanted it to be.

What are the pits and peaks of your experience?

I’ve had many pits and peaks – a constant rollercoaster. In 2008, I had a very successful spa business that I had built into a $2 million business from a $2000 credit loan. I also had a very successful distribution business. The economy crashed in 2008 just as I was about to sell my chain of spas, I lost everything. In 2009, I was in the worst state so that’s why I went onto the Dragon’s Den. In 2010, after working on Tan Organic and coming up with a new business concept there was a big high because we had a phenomenal response to the product and people really liked the product that was genuinely organic, not just claiming to be organic, so we had a massive demand of the product. It sold over $1million retail in the fi rst three months of pharmacy retail. We then had a real problem where I had a cork, I wanted the product so natural, and I was so fanatical about the packaging that I stupidly put on a cork that was too small. We then had to recall the product. When I look back now it was blessing in disguise because it wouldn’t have travelled well. We then re looked at our packaging, we’ve had to relook at the market.

The business is always up and down but we’re very excited in launching to Australia because you are so passionate about organic. You’re so conscious about skin damage and skin cancerawareness and safetanning. You also have the largest number of homeopaths per capitain the world. It is sucha sweet spot for my product so I’m veryexcited about this.

Which would you classify to be a bigger peak - getting the eco

certifi cation or launching the world’s fi rst ever self-tanning oil?

We were the fi rst to get a self-tanning brand eco certifi ed. Its very exciting to be the innovator of self-tanning oil, our idea was a new trend. People may copy us now, but they won’t be organic or certifi ed so the fact that we were the fi rst original self-tanning oil and that we made it organic is probably a big one for us.

What are your goals for the business? What direction do you envisage

your business going?

We are very excited to launch into Australia! We are also launching into the UK in 2015, we are also launching into the USA. We have some exciting R & D going on where we want to be the very fi rst organic sunscreen so there isn’t as much nasty chemicals going on in your skin when you’re trying to protect it. It is so important to protect your skin against sun damage but then it is hard to get that natural and organic. We would also like to do more with our charity; we are very passionate about our sun smart campaign and making people aware of sun damage in Australia. You are much more educated, more than anywhere else in the world. We need to educate people in the rest of the world to bring to your level of education.

What advice would you give to anyone starting a business like

yours?

I suppose I would have to give advice about business before ethics. The mistake I made was

that I did everything by myself to save on costs. I should’ve got a team around me sooner – marketing, fi nance etc. Also, bringing someone in that’s an expert. Branding is very important. To hire experts that can manage your message across your consumer properly. There can be many mistakes delivering a message incorrectly because there are experts that can do it. Any message, ethical brand, or visions that you have you need to hire experts to deliver your message to the consumer properly.

What are the top fi ve tips for creating a business like yours?

1. You need to be passionate about and enjoy what you do.

2. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you.

3 . Make sure you learn from your mistakes.

4. Choose a perfect PR partner and a branding company that can deliver your message is

very important. They are the main things that I would advise anybody on.

5. Also, never dismiss online. It has had an absolutely massive growth, and it really is

where everything is! Whether it be bloggers, Facebook, Twitter, digital media, etc. Online is extremely important in building a business these days.

10 MUST HAVEESSENTIAL

OILS FORSUMMER

Written by: Michelle Reeve - Founder & Managing Director Waterlily Australasiawww.waterlilyskinbodyspa.com.au

Here are 10 must have essential oils that deliver rejuvenating benefi ts, not least of all soothing relaxation for the mind and glowing luminosity for skin!

1. Pressed from the rind, Lemon (citrus lemon) is uplifting and antiseptic.

Not only does the oil promote clean and clear skin, lemon also inhibits the anti-elastase enzyme that causes fi ne lines and wrinkles. A gently purifying oil to eff ectively clarify skin while defying the signs of ageing!

2. Geranium (pelargonium graveolens) with its dappled leaves and vibrant

bouquet is ideal for all round balancing. From regulating hormones to nervous function geranium helps to holistically maintain and harmonise the body’s optimum levels for wellness. These regulating eff ects also work within our skin to balance oil and hydration levels. A great remedy for combination and oil prone skin types while gently toning and moisturising the complexion.

3.Relaxing Lavender (lavendula angustifolia) coaxes you into a peaceful

slumber, yet conversely energises cell regeneration to stimulate new growth warding off the eff ects of ageing. The oil penetrates deep into the dermis to target scarring and skin damage while soothing fi ne lines and wrinkles. An eff ective remedy to quickly heal burns, blisters, bites and stings.

4. Fennel (foeniculum vulgare) boosts detoxifi cation by activating the

lymphatic system. The lymphatics are responsible for eliminating toxicity and can be prone to congestion causing uneven skin tone and texture. Fennel is a great addition to creams and lotions to assist with cellulite, fl uid retention and to gently purify and cleanse the body.

5. Mandarin (citrus reticulate) not only feels sunny and uplifting with its deliciously

aromatic ester notes, but is a model oil to encourage circulation improving the condition of the skin.

WHETHER YOU SIMPLY ENJOY THE TANTALISING PERFUME OF ESSENTIAL OILS OR ARE LOOKING FOR SIMPLE YET EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS TO BOOST WELLNESS AND VITALITY, NATURE’S AROMATIC ELIXIRS PROVIDE THE ANSWER.

LILY Online Magazine062

LILY Online Magazine

It is also gently depurifying to decongest, strengthen and cleanse. Topically mandarin is excellent for toning the skin and increasing elasticity. Especially great to guard against stretch marks.

6. Jasmine (jasminum sambac) apart from its exquisite fl oral notes and aphrodisiac

properties, is indicated for problematic skin to equalize sebum, the skins natural oils while minimising sensitivity and infl ammation. It is a restorative oil used to remedy many skin conditions but also excellent for relieving nervous tension including anxiety, depression and stress.

7.Ylang Ylang (cananga odorata) fl owers have long been a part of the beauty

rituals in the islands of Asia and South Pacifi c. The local women have been using the crushed essences of the golden ylang ylang fl owers to create conditioning hair treatments for shiny lustrous locks, and exotic body perfumes to entice and lure potential partners!

8. Frankincense (boswellia carteri) works at a cellular level to combat dry skin.

It has been renowned for its anti-ageing ability to protect skin cells from free radical and photo damage while stimulating new cell growth. Recent research has also shown remarkable results in the correction of DNA mutations. Frankincense also has the added benefi t of inducing calm and stillness by slowing and deepening the breath for eff ective and aromatic stress relief.

9. Clove (syzygium aromaticum) is a wonderfully analgesic oil to release

aching tired limbs. Add a few drops to a full cream glass of milk and pour into a drawn warm bath for instant relaxation while restoring and fortifying mind and body. Feel tensions released as the oil quietly restores immunity and digestion while revitalising the skin.

10. Rose (rosa damascena) is the queen of essential oils due to a host of

extraordinary rejuvenating benefi ts. Each drop of rose essential oil is distilled from over 100 fl owering roses! The many benefi ts include Rose’s ability to strengthen our vascular system to oxygenate the skin. It is gently astringent and toning yet boosts hydration. Rose is known to be eff ective on fi ne lines, wrinkles, dehydration, skin tone, dryness and premature ageing.

JURLIQUE PAVED THE WAY FOR THE SKINCARE INDUSTRY TO MAKE POSITIVE SHIFTS TO SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION AND NATURAL INGREDIENTS. IN THIS INTERVIEW WE FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THAT JOURNEY.

LILY Online Magazine loves organic and natural products and you

too have an interesting and ethical philosophy. Can you describe it?

“Since Jurlique’s inception in 1985 we have adhered to our philiosophy of using biodynamic* and organic principles when growing our botanicals. We are also certifi ed biodynamic* and organic with NASAA (National Association of Sustainable Agriculture Australia). This is because the Kleins (the founders of Jurlique) believed they could not create the best skin care products on earth without using biodynamic* and organic ingredients. We still believe this

today and thus use the same techniques, although on a much bigger scale!” explains Marc Intervera, Horticultural Specialist, Jurlique

What’s unique about your products and the process you go through to create them?

“On the Jurlique farm we aim to grow high-quality ingredients, in harmony with nature in a fertile environment that is sustained. This is achieved through our biodynamic* farming methods. Biodynamic and organic farming, does not involve the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertiliser.”

“Being biodynamic* is important to Jurlique’s farming practices as it is a holistic and sustainable approach to farming which works in harmony with nature and natural cycles. This approach to farm management results in fertile and active soils in which Jurlique grow its plants. Jurlique believes that fertile soil produces strong plants, which are then harvested at the peak of their natural cycle and incorporated into Jurlique’s range of skin care products.”

What are your goals for your business?

“The end goal is for Jurlique’s biodynamic* farming eff orts to produce the highest-quality skincare products that are as natural as possible, while simultaneously benefi tting and protecting the environment so our impact on the earth is kept to a minimum. As a business we want to be able to provide consumers with a natural yet eff ective alternative to the other skin care products on the market. We continue to do this by listening to our customers and responding to their needs.” explains Laurence Crussol, Managing Director, ANZ – Europe - North America, Jurlique.

What advice would you give anyone thinking of starting a business

with an ethical model like yours?

“Passion and a clear ethos are vital. Jurlique was originally created as a niche natural skin care range but soon became the only Australian beauty brand with their own certifi ed biodynamic* farm (certifi ed by NASAA, National Association of Sustainable Agriculture, Australia) and as such Jurlique became the leader in natural skin care science in Australia for nearly 30 years and has since expanded into many global markets.”

“Despite now being a global brand, Jurlique remains true to itself and its core values and iscommitted to growing certifi ed biodynamic* ingredients of the highest quality.”

What are your TOP 3 tips for creating a business like yours?

1. Have a clear ethos

“Jurlique was founded in 1985 in South Australia by biochemist and naturopath, Dr Jurgen Klein, and his wife Ulrike, who was a horticulturalist; so from the very beginning there was a keen interest and expertise in harvesting the highest quality, active ingredients and in taking a holistic approach to skincare and harnessing the healing power of nature with the use of herbs and homeopathy. This has been the basis for Jurlique’s products and has continued to drive the brand, therefore, the fi rst step is a strong ethos.”

2. A passion for the product you are creating

“Jurlique is unique in that the company oversees every stage of the product development journey from seed to store. Since inception, the brand’s passion remains the same – to provide natural, innovative and eff ective beauty care for its customers.”

3. Be consumer-centric

“At Jurlique we truly care about our consumers and invite feedback. We create products with our consumers’ skin care needs in mind. Team this with natural, high-quality, eff ective ingredients and you will create something great – as we have done.”

*Certifi ed biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Jurlique’s products and farm are not certifi ed by or affi liated with Demeter® USA or Demeter International.

WE INTERVIEW IRENE FALCONE, NATURAL SKINCARE EXPERT AND FOUNDER OF TOXIN-FREE BEAUTY E-TAILER.

Here at LILY Online Magazine we love organic products, your business has

a great ethical philosophy, can you tell us about that and the products?

I am extremely strict when it comes to what products I allow on my store. Almost everything is either certifi ed organic or 100% Natural. You won’t fi nd anything on Nourished Life that contains: Parabens Mineral Oil Petroleum Sodium laureth/lauryl sulphate Aluminium Synthetic fragrances PEGs Phenoxyethanol Talc

I also like to support Australian brands and brands who are environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Did you start your career in this industry? Tell us a bit about your

career journey to starting Nourished Life?

I come from a long background in marketing. Through that time I was (and still am) a total makeup addict and for years overloaded my body with toxins from mainstream makeup and skincare, processed foods and long hours until it all fi nally caught up with me and I began feeling the physical side eff ects.

That’s what prompted me to start thinking about what I put in and on my body so I threw away every product in my home that I couldn’t understand the labels of and began researching natural toxin-free alternatives.

That’s what prompted me to start blogging about my research on what ingredients to avoid as well as the best, most eff ective natural alternatives to makeup and skincare, which soon evolved into the online shop of my dreams – Nourished Life - a place where everyone could buy aff ordable pure, safe, natural and organic products online and all in the one place.

Christmas Cork Deer Friends

Step 1: make 4 little holes at a slight angle in the bottom of a

cork to place the small branches and use them as legs, repeat the same step to do the Deer’s horns (2 holes).

Step 2: make small cotton balls or use push pins to use them

for the eyes and noses, color your choice.

Step 3: Decorate the Deers with some bows to give them

a cool christmas look.

093

Many people cannot aff ord real christmas trees in their homes,

or just don’t have enough space, here is a great idea to be creative, save money and space! I had a lot of fun getting the perfect tree branches from the forest. Do it yourself and keep it simple!

Step 1: Arrange tree branches to your desired length, space

out your branches evenly with the smallest at the top and the largest on the bottom, you can use a pencil to make your life easier and mark points in the wall, then just attach the branches to the wall.

Step 2: Now the fun part , place all the ornements you want. To

make it cozy add some christmas lights and done!

Step 1: Take a small piece of cotton, paint it with the marker of your selection. Make as many as youwant.

Step 2: Create little cotton balls so that they look like felt beads and glue them onto the pine.

Step 3: Cut cork in half, just like the photo shows, place half of cork as base for your pine tree and ready!

If you don’t have any cotton, try using some chocolate packages, specially the metallic ones are perfect to get in the mood for your christmas Decorating.

SURVIVING ABUSEINSIDE THE LIFE OF A BOY, AN ABUSE SURVIVOR WHO WENT ON TO PROVEHE CAN’T BE BROKEN...WRITER: Derek www.facebook.com/EmpoweredAndBeautiful

In this brave account of his experience Derek shows us inside the world of a little boy who lived a

nightmare just like many children are right now. His insight has lead him to become one of the dedicated Advisors behind the Domestic Violence Support Group Empowered and Beautiful, with whom we have pledged our support as a Community Partner in raising awareness of Domestic Violence. Take a moment to experience a story of abuse and survival, it evokes a visualisation of the true life of this child, our hope is that this helps to educate and inform our readers and encourage action on the issue of Breaking the Silence on Domestic Violence...

Cold damp and dingy at the best of times, that was the best way to describe the 2 up and 2 down

terrace house in the picturesque village in Kent...but this morning it was very diff erent, Jack Frost had been in my bedroom during the night, he had drawn

his pretty pictures all over the inside of my windows.

However I thought I could make Mum and Dad happy! I could hear them talking in their room.

So I jumped out of bed onto the little mat on the cold lino fl oor, pulled my dressing gown off my bed that had doubled as an extra blanket and put it on, then kicked my slippers on and headed for the landing. On the landing I called out ‘Morning Mum morning Dad, I’ll put the kettle on and make you both a cuppa’, off I toddled down the steep stairs to an even colder kitchen and it’s rough stone fl oor.

I grabbed the kettle off the cooker over to the sink and shoved my wooden fruit crate with my foot

up to the unit front, stood on it and stretched over the huge sink and turned the tap on. I had to run some water to check that there was no dirt etc... (old piping) Happy it was ok after about a minute I fi lled

OFTEN WE THINK OF VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AS BEING A ‘WIFE’ OR ‘GIRLFRIEND’ A ‘GIRL’ OR ‘WOMAN’, HOWEVER OFTEN THE VICTIMS ARE CHILDREN AND BOYS...

LILY Online Magazine0148

the kettle, back to the cooker set it on the ring and lit the gas. Now for the next mission I hated it but it had to be done, I needed a wee and the privy was a 20yd hike up the back garden I unlocked the stable type back door and off I ran.

Then the 20yd dash back to a slightly warmer house. The kettle was about halfway boiled, I

went into the front room drew back the curtains then back to tend to the fi re. Now a Yo-Yo had nothing on me for the next manoeuvres! Into the kitchen put a drop of hot water into the tea pot and swill it around, back to the fi re and check it was still ‘roaring’, back to the kitchen, empty the pot and in went 3 big spoons of tea leaves, fi ll the pot and put a drop of water in 3 cups to warm them. Now the fi nal check on the fi re, top it up with coal and a big log on top. Back to the kitchen I emptied the cups out and stirred the tea pot, refi ll the pot and tea cosy on, all the cups on a tray and shuffl e back upstairs. I made it to the top, all 17 steps and didn’t spill a drop, I put the tray down and knocked on my parent’s bedroom door and bent down and picked up 2 Mugs. Mum answered ‘come in’... ‘Morning Mum and Dad cup of tea nice and strong as the doctor orders’. It felt like the longest walk across the room to dad’s side, I gave him his tea fi rst then back to the door to give mum hers ‘thank you’ she said with a smile more than I got out of dad he just grunted. ‘I’ve checked the loo mum, all working heater’s up, I raked the fi re and set it up, drew it back, topped it up with a log and coal and oh there’s tea in the pot’, she smiled ‘thank you son’. ‘Yep well done, what about the scuttle?’ he says. ‘There’s enough for another top up Dad and after I’ve had breakfast I’ll fi ll it up before I muck out the dog kennels’. Wow I’d only been up 30 minutes and done a shift, ‘Ok boy’ he said. So I turned to mum ‘Right I’ll be off back to my room then’, out I went shutting the door fi rmly behind me pleased as punch with what I had done.

I bent and picked up my mug and the tray and shuffl ed into my room, I’m sure I heard their

bedroom door latch go? ............ My head lurched forward a million stars shot before my eyes, the little mat on the lino fl oor slid towards my bed, my head was throbbing I don’t know where my tea and the tray went. Half my right leg went under the edge of my bed, the other half and me went over the mattress, I heard the ‘crack’ and felt it! The pain was unbelievable! I woke to hear the words ‘The little bastard made himself a drink’, then Mother was leaning over me ‘You remember you slipped and fell and banged your head as well’, that was followed by him stating ‘Don’t you forget it either’... Like I was going to anytime soon, a lump the size of a ‘tennis ball’ on my head and my leg looking like a ‘tree trunk’.

Hospital and 12 weeks in plaster from toe tips to crotch to follow... I am only 6 YEARS OLD for

C*#@T’s SAKE what else could happen?... I wish I didn’t found out...

After 12 weeks in plaster I fi nally had it removed! I was DEEMED FIT by the Hospital to Walk?!

The ambulance dropped me off at my house with my mother and as I shuffl ed out of the back, the Paramedic handed me a pair of ‘sticks’ to help me stand! The ‘Sperm Donor’ (my father) snatched them out of his hands, threw them in the back of the Ambulance and said “He won’t need those!” He then told me to walk the 750 ft to the back door of my home. That was the longest 10 minutes on my knees ‘crawling’ to the back door, and all visible on the main road! How embarrassing? I then had 3 weeks to learn to ‘walk’ all over again, before I had to go back to school after the ‘Summer Holiday’. It was 3 miles to school, all along Country Roads. In the last of my 3 week Holidays I had to ‘Learn to walk and cover the distance’ ‘OR ELSE!’ Many ‘Slaps/Beatings’ followed, any attempt to support myself as I walked, met with another ‘tirade’ of physical abuse or another! If the ‘Sperm Donor’ was at work, my mother revelled in giving her ‘daily report’ of my ‘progress’ when he got home. She’d report Good or Bad progress. Even if it was good I knew there would be trouble for not doing BETTER than GOOD! I could never do anything to please! The ‘STIGMA’ of this remains to this day.

It was this fi rst memorable ‘Experience?’ ... one of far too many to follow that inspired me to discovery

Empowered and Beautiful the Domestic Violence Support Group, and to becoming an ‘Advisor’ for them. I have been counselled by UK Military and the UK Police after a ‘subsequent’ Court Case!!! But neither of these can match the ‘Love and Support’ I have had from the EAB Team and it’s followers. ‘No Child’ should suff er any Physical/Mental/Sexual Abuse and as a ‘Dedicated Survivor’ for the EAB Team, I will endeavour to help Victims who want to be Survivors! If you are a ‘Survivor’ I want you to know you are not alone and the EAB is here to support you!

Like my experience these incidents are happening as you read this WORLDWIDE. Please help by

Liking the EAB facebook page, following the EAB and supporting their members! We AIM to make a diff erence ‘ NO VIOLENCE is ACCEPTABLE!’
