Milton Road Library’s Future is Secured
Some local parents have met
to talk about the kind of
school and pre-
school provision that
they want. They
have set up a

After 13 December
this site will include
information about
sponsors who have
come forward and offer the
chance for interested parents
to ask questions.

In view of the rising
population of children in
North Cambridge,
the county council
has decided to open
a new school on the
site of the old Shirley
Infants on Green End
Road. It will be a
one-form intake and
also include a pre-
school provision.
G o v e r n m e n t
legislation means that
the Local Education
Authority (LEA)
must look for a
sponsor for an academy or
consider a free school (both
f u n d e d b y c e n t r a l
government).
There is a tight timetable as
the school is due to be open
in September next year. The
new preferred sponsor should
be known by mid-January and
East Chesterton parents will
be given a special extension to
allow them to make decisions
about their child’s schooling
after that date.

After being under threat two
years ago, Milton Road Library
now has a much brighter
future as the County Council
and Cambridge City Council
have joined forces to work
with the Friends of Milton
Road Library on ideas for a
complete redevelopment of
the site based on the model at
Great Shelford. The project
could provide a
l ib ra ry and
community hub
at ground level
and a residential
d e v e l o p m e n t
above which
c o u l d a l s o
help fund the
p r o j e c t
completely or in
p a r t .
Management of
the hub and community space
cou ld b e th rough a
community based model.
The project is great news for
West Chesterton which has
very little in the way of
community facilities and a
resounding success for the
Friends who have worked
hard to secure the library’s
A New School for Chesterton
future. They have welcomed
the proposal and asked that the
local library service be
continued on the nearby Roger
Ascham site in Ascham Road
during any construction period.

Messy Christmas
Of all the presents I might
en joy rece iv ing th is
Christmas, a scratch and
sniff Christmas card of the
Nativity would not be on
the list! When I think about
the Christmas story, I find it
hard not to wonder at the
messiness and smelliness of
it all. I don’t imagine that
any new mother would wish
for their first born to come
into the world in the way
that Jesus did. In our
culture, at least, quite a lot
of planning goes into that
special and anxious time,
with a bag ready packed and
waiting to take to the
hospital, or the home
env ironment spec ia l ly
prepared for the birth.
Mary had to face an
uncertain time, in a strange
place with no rooms
available for her to give
birth in.
It was far from a picture
postcard event for anyone
involved, but it is thrilling to
think that God chose to
intervene in the world in
such a messy way. I find it
thrilling because it must
mean that God is not afraid
of people and their
messiness. In fact, rather
than being afraid of it, God
enters into the middle of it.
This is not a God who
wants us airbrushed or
modified, but who accepts
us and loves us for exactly
who we are in all our
messiness.
It is a continuing challenge
to love other people the
way that God loves us.
Their messiness can
sometimes make life difficult
and hurt us in extreme
ways. But we know that the
call to love other people
isn’t just to love them when
they are perfect, but to love
them always.
So maybe, on second
thoughts, that scratch and
sniff Christmas card of the
nativity might not be such a
bad idea! At least it would
remind me the God loves
me in my messiness and
challenge me to love in the
same way.
With best wishes for a good
Christmas for you and
yours,
Ruth Adams

Bell-ringing in
Chesterton Bell-ringing has been part of religious
and social occasions in Britain for over
a thousand years. Bells first came to
Chesterton (to St Andrew’s Church) in
the 14th Century and, unlike the bells
of Barnwell Priory (near the junction of
Newmarket Road and Coldhams Lane
t o d a y ) , t h e y s u r v i v e d t h e
Reformation. St Andrew’s current set
of bells have sounded out since
1612. Samuel Pepys noted ‘walking
with great pleasure’ as the bells rung
during his visit to the parish in
1668. The Westminster Chimes were
composed in 1793 for the nearby
church of St Mary the Great in
Cambridge. Who at the time could
have predicted how ubiquitous those
notes would become? These same
chimes were finally brought to St
Andrew’s Church clock in 1921.
St Andrew’s tower has six bells, the
heaviest of which weighs over three-
quarters of a tonne. With a degree of
practice, despite the enormous weight
of the whirling metal above, bell-ringers
can control the striking of the bells
surprisingly precisely, leading to the
descending scale of notes called
‘rounds’ often heard at weddings and
other times of celebration. Bell-ringing
is a great activity for people of any age,
and in a lot of ways the social aspect is
just as important as the technical!
St Andrew’s bell-ringers plan to
continue the fine tradition by marking
the start of Chesterton Community
Carols on
Thursday 20 December in addition to
the normal calendar of service and
practice ringing.
There is a bell-ringing practice on
Thursdays every week at St Andrew’s
from 7.30pm until 9pm. Members of
the public are always welcome to come
to see what is involved. If you arrive
early, there can even be an opportunity
to climb the 20 metres into the belfry to
see the bells! Everyone is invited to get
involved, regardless of age (although
children under 10 will need to start with
considerably lighter bells than those
found in St Andrew’s tower!). For further
