158 The Jrlsii Naturalists' Journal. [Vol. IX.

To redraw the boundary accurately will be dilTtcult in view of the paucity of exposures and the heavy Drift hereabouts.

OUR LIBRARY TABLE. Wild Animals and the Land, by F. Howard Lancum, M.B.E., F.Z.S.,

13*> pip., plates, 10/6 net, London : Crosby Lockiwood & Son, Ltd. In view of <l!h<e present importance of growing every scrap of food

possible in these islands, this book makes a timely appearance. In it we have the -experiences of a held naturalist oif long standing, who has sought, with no small anion nt of Sfiiccess, to- deal with the economic status of British mammals, reptiles and amphibians. There are the really injurimis mammals take Fox, Rabbit, rats and mice; those that are wholly beneficial, etuclh. as shrews, lizards, frogs and

toads, while concerning others opinions differ. In the last named

group is the Badger and the author has mulch to say in lis favour. In like manner he deals with both Hedgehog and Stoat, yet never

allows dogmaitism to over-ride argument, based on personal observation in the held. This is a book that should be widely read ; it is both

delightfully written and illustrated.

The South-Eastern Naturalist and Antiquary, vol. LI1, 1947, 96 pp., i liustrafed. London.

Containing [papers read at the Brighton Congress, 1947. The

presidential address by Professor W. A. F. Balfour-Brown, M.A.,

F.R.E.S., deals with "

The Possiifbilifies of Natural History," with illustrations mainly drawn from study of aqua/tic ooleoptera. Professor

G. D. Hale Carpenter has an informative paper on protective coloura tion in insects and its in te<rp relation, while Dr. \V. Nonman Maple

writes on il

The Dinosaurs." Other papers deal with the Kent and Sussex orchids, and

" S<oil in Civil Engineeriing." There are numerous

reports and records.

OId-Fashioned Verses and Sketches, by Rosamund Praeger, 63 pp., iIllustrations, 10/6. Dundalk : W. Tempest, Dundalgan Press.

Sister of Ireland's foremost 'botanist and valued Sectional Editor of I.N.J., (Miss Praeger is equally well known, in the realm of art,

especially for her isculptures of children. She now exhibits more than a rlamr as a writer oif verse. Nature, life in her native Co. Down and the human touch (not lacking in /philosophy) are, in the main, her

siuibje'cts ; little points noted ^mong a fruitful life are translated into words that flow and ripple as does a Co. Down stream. The whole

work is enriched by a selection of clever sketches by Miiss Praegen* herself, together with a plate of her unfforgetatole

" Philosopher,"

with the delightful "

Bridget," in colour, as a frontispiece.

Lightkeeper's Lyrics, by D. J. O'Sullivan, &Z ipp., illustrations by Alfred Kerr, 7/6. Duhdalk : W. Tempest, Dundalgan Press.

17iis delightful Irttle book of verse is written by one who is well

known to readers of LNJ. for his nature observations made during

sojourns in many remote places wtare lighthouses flash out. In prose D. J. O'Sullivan's recordings have gained the admiration of all for

the intensity and purpose of its probing; in verse he is no less

painstaking.' He ever so simply tells of Nightfall in Innisfbtrahull where?" Grey-seals in their harem caverns snore"; where?" Depart

ing sunbeams linger on the tide." There are verses giving exquisite little (pictures off Scurvy Grass, The Little Black Beetle, May Time

and The 9c.raiwOiut.ter?" Building stacks on the strrpp'd ground." The illustrations are in excellent taste, while Geoffrey Taylor's intro

duction is a well -deserved tribute?" Fresh, clean and direct, these

poems are of the country."
