ERCO specialises in producing engineering hardware and software for architectural lighting. First and foremost, we see ourselves as selling light, not luminaires. This approach, which places the immaterial “software” of light above the physical hardware of the luminaires, has been the trademark of our work for many years. That’s why we call ourselves:

ERCO, the Light Factory.

Language of Light

Ambient luminescenceProvides general lighting of the visual environment. Architecture, objects and people in the environment are made visible, to allow for orientation, work and communication.

Focal glowrefers to accent lighting. Light is used deliberately to convey information by visually accentuating significant areas and allowing the insignificant areas to remainin the background.

Play of brilliantsis the decorative application of light. Specular effects produced by the light source and illuminated materi-als – from the candle flame and chandelier to the light sculpture – contribute towards creating a prestigious, festive or exciting atmosphere.

Whether lighting a museum, a boutique or a park, there is always a “language of light”. This concept has evolved over several decades and is now a means for analysing and structuring lighting projects. The three basic categories of this “language” – ambient lighting, accent lighting and scenic lighting – go back to the American Richard Kelly, a pioneer of lighting design. Experience shows that lighting concepts are considered to be pleasing and successful when all three components are present in a well-balanced relationship.

Man and his perception determines whether lighting is efficient. Irrespective of any technical measure of ef-ficiency, if light produces glare, it will impair vision and diminish people‘s comfort, resulting in wasted energy. The eye is forced to adapt and the pupils contract. The result is that even zones of high illuminance will appear relatively dark in comparison with the dazzling source of light. Glare-free, comfortable light, by contrast, creates optimum viewing conditions for the human eye. From the outset it allows the designer to use an energy ef-ficient solution with lower illuminance levels and subtle contrasts.

Vertical illuminance is a characteristic feature of well-designed, economical lighting concepts. For this reason, ERCO offers a particularly wide range of appropriate lighting tools. Vertical illuminance using special wall-washers is far more important to the subjective percep-tion of brightness than the light on horizontal surfaces. This is taken into account in perception-oriented lighting design as an optimal solution that contributes signifi-cantly to meeting the requirements of the users of archi-tecture and can help save energy if used in an appropri-ate lighting concept. So, for example, the impression of brightness in a room is created more efficiently using a differentiated lighting concept which involves wallwash-ing than a uniform level of brightness resulting only from direct ambient lighting. The average illuminance can be decreased accordingly, reducing the required number of luminaires.

Whether design and boutique hotels, theme restaurants or other gastronomic experiences: the concept applied to gastronomy always requires a spatial and scenic frame to carry and communicate the theme. Responsible designers, investors and operator recognize more and more the potential of light in context with architecture. To exploit this potential by managing the interaction of light in time, space and atmosphere and integrating it into a coherent scenography – therefore ERCO specialists from the segment hotel bars restaurant stand by already in the early state of the conceptual design.

The hotel

Using an exemplary hotel floor plan we demonstrate in the areas lobby, restaurant, conference and guest rooms the application of the grammar of light as the basis of a coherent lighting design concept.

Vertical illumination of the walls in the area of reception and bar provides general light for orientation, makes spatial proportions visible and gives the observer a clear and open impression of the room.

The hotel lounge – Focal glow

Accent lighting goes beyond general ambient lighting. Directed light on the doors to stairs and lift accentuates any eye-catching features and actively helps to convey information. The accent lighting on the front of the reception desk, bar and bar tables emphasizes the darker areas and creates hierarchies of perception.

Page 11: Lighting design concept for hotels bars restaurants

ERCO 11

The hotel lounge – Focal glow

Focal glow is used to arrive at a differentiation. Brightly lit areas automatically draw peoples attention. The visual environment is easily recognized in terms of its struc-tures and the significance of the objects it contains. Accent lighting on the columns makes them a formative architectural element and structure the room.

ERCO 12

The hotel lounge – Play of brilliants

The third form of light, “play of brilliants“, results from the insight that light not only draws our attention to information, but can also represent information in wand of itself. The lampshade of the decorative floor lighting in the lobby adds a soft light and creates an intimate atmos-phere.

Page 13: Lighting design concept for hotels bars restaurants

ERCO 13

The hotel lounge – Play of brilliants

Decorative lighting effects with colours, patterns and dynamic changes create atmosphere and magic. In the bar area gobo projectors project moving patterns on the wall, the backside of the bar is lit with a dynamic colour progression.

The hotel lounge

The different areas of the lounge are controlled by an intelligent lighting control system. The required mood can be set automatically or by hand. The incoming guest is directed by a higher illuminance on his way from the entrance to the reception. Later in the evening the light level is lowered in different zones at a predetermined time.

It is only when ambient lighting, accent lighting and scenic lighting are combined that a lighting concept is complete.

The restaurant

An exemplary restaurant with single arranged tables. In the middle of the room furnished with chairs, alongside the wall with continuous seat bench.

The restaurant – Ambient luminescence

From the point of view of perception psychology and aesthetics, wallwasher lighting is an important concept for constructing spaces with light. The vertical illumina-tion of the right wall only brings out this area as a self-contained room. The reflection of the light provides the tables arranged along the wall with a comfortable light and makes lightings above unnecessary.

Page 18: Lighting design concept for hotels bars restaurants

ERCO 18

The restaurant – Ambient luminescence

For the illumination of tables in the spatial depth light-ings with an oval light distribution are used. Tables can be arranged freely in this area. Compared to an illumina-tion with spotlights for each table an even light distribu-tion is achieved at every place within this zone.

ERCO 19

The restaurant – Focal glow

Accent lighting on every table structures the room, provides a dramatic light mood and creates islands of intimacy.

Page 20: Lighting design concept for hotels bars restaurants

ERCO 20

The restaurant – Ambient luminescence / Focal glow

Only by changing the vertical illumination of the walls a new hierarchy of perception arises. By illuminating only the left wall the observer will imagine the spatial depth of the corridor, the room itself does not appear as self-contained any longer.

ERCO 21

The restaurant – Play of brilliants

A play of brilliants is produced by decorative light, by light that is attractive and is an aesthetic end in itself. Static or moving light patterns from gobo projectors en-hance the experience and the attractiveness of the room.

The conference room – Ambient luminescence

Light on vertical areas is primarily used to show the proportion and dimension of a room. Compared to a typically horizontal illumination of conference rooms as a result of only using quantitative lighting design, illumi-nated walls create a bright and open impression of the room and leads to a feeling of well-being.

Page 24: Lighting design concept for hotels bars restaurants

ERCO 24

Adding horizontal light to the vertical enables visual tasks, for example orientating within the tiers, reading and making notes.

Page 25: Lighting design concept for hotels bars restaurants

The conference room – Focal glow

The illumination of only the front wall and speaker’s desk provides a focus for the auditorium and identifies the beginning of the presentation.

Page 26: Lighting design concept for hotels bars restaurants

ERCO 26

The conference room – Play of brilliants

Instead of a decorative lighting or a gobo projection a video projector can offer a “play of brilliants”. To increase attention and avoid the audience getting tired, the left wall is lit with a low illuminance in order to make the room distinguishable and provides a sense of security. The coloured lighting behind the speaker’s desk enhances the attractiveness of the room.

“Scenography” in its origin is closely linked with the design of stage sets. Defined as the design of the visual and spatial dimension of scenic events, the strategies and methods of scenography can be applied not only to the theatre but also to multifunctional used room, such as a conference room in this case.

The guest room – Ambient luminescence

Illuminated walls give the observer a bright and open spatial impression. The fascination of wallwashing arises not only from the perception of brightness but also from the clear spatial presentation, which organises the archi-tecture thereby making the surroundings more compre-hensible. The vertical illumination of the wall is used for the general light, the intensity can be varied according to the respective need.

The guest room – Focal glow

Desk and bed table are accentuated with directed light. Following the approach of “focal glow” it creates eye-catching features and provides sufficient light for the visual task in these areas.

The guest room – Play of brilliants

If the technology is hidden, they can exude a mysterious aura. If a very high luminance is emitted, the resulting glare can be distracting. This approach to lighting acts as an aesthetic, complementary component in which the light itself has a role to play. Through form, colour and pattern of the decorative lighting, “play of brilliants” forms its own content within the architecture. The floor lamp creates an intimate zone and makes the room of secondary importance.

„tune the light“ - this slogan describes our ongoing quest for optimum solutions for architectural lighting. Scenographic light offers design dimensions at an ever-higher level. By illuminating the vertical jalousie with coloured light, the guest can express his momentarily mood. The colour dynamic light will as well be recog-nized by an outstanding observer, the building itself will take a perpetual turn of perception.
