THE HUMAN LIGHT

Light is a daily presence in our lives.The relationship between people, light and the environment has always been central in Artemide’s vision and it has been developed over the years. This ranges from the aspects aimed at the well-being of the individual and their perception of spaces, to tackling the issues associated with environmental sustainability.

The Human Light is light capable of following theflow of individuals’ behaviours and emotions. It is designed for the psychological well-being of people, offering new qualities, emotions and awareness to our lives and opening up an innovative and responsible vision of the future.

Light becomes a mouldable raw material with The Human Light, an active instrument to support the Self, a means of regaining stimuli and sensations.The self-awareness in the relationship between light and people must be interpreted not only as a right to flexible management within everybody’s reach, but above all as an obligation. LCA (Life Cycle Assessment)

La LCA è un approccio strategico utilizzato per valutare il potenziale impatto ambientale che un prodotto ha in tutte le fasi del suo ciclo di vita: scelta delle materie prime, lavorazioni, trasporto e assemblaggio, imballaggio, distri-buzione, fase d’uso, dismissione e riciclaggio.

L’attività di ricerca di Artemide è costantemente impegnata a sviluppare ed adottare sistemi di illuminazione che perseguano l’obiettivo della massima efficienza energetica. Tutte le scelte progettuali sono focalizzate versoun unico obiettivo: migliorare la qualità della vitadell’uomo e il suo rapporto con l’ambiente. Nell’ambito di una politica di riduzione dei consumi energetici e in anticipo rispetto a vincoli normativi, sono quattro le aree di azione in cui si traduce concretamente l’impegno di Artemide:

Eco-EffectivenessMassima attenzione al processo di progettazione e produzione: uso responsabile delle risorse, accurata scelta dei processi e delle tecnologie in un’ottica di bilancio energetico.

Long termProgettare per la lunga durata attraverso un’attenta progettazione dell’intero ciclo di vita del prodotto promuovendo la formazione tecnica interna, utilizzando le esperienze maturate nell’ambito di ricerche sulla sostenibilità (LCA, analisi delle tecnologie, dei processi etc.) sviluppate con centri di ricerca universitari.

Responsible ConsumptionDiffondere cultura e offrire strumenti per una scelta consapevole (TCO, LENI) e un utilizzo ragionato della luce, qualificandola in termini di risparmio energetico ed economico.

LCA (Life Cycle Assessment)LCA is a strategic approach used to assess the potential environment impact that a product has during all the stages of its life cycle: selection of raw materials, processing, transport and assembly, packaging, distribution, use phase, disposal and recycling.

We find ourselves at a time when the evolution of technology offers interesting opportunities for the development of generations of conceptually new products. Nevertheless, in the field of light today technological progress is no longer accessible to everyone; it is more complex and requires skilful interpreters: the designer’s creativity must necessarily be measured against that of a specialist team. For this reason, over the years Artemide has equipped itself with a research and development structure where there is space for the most diverse and specialist technical expertise, accredited laboratories and certified quality systems.

On one hand, innovation is delivered in the use of LEDs and energy-saving light sources, by using materials and innovative production techniques with attention devoted to efficiency and the quality of the performance. On the other hand, research and technological innovation are understood in a humanistic sense with the aim of continually making a contribution towards the quality of life for people and the planet. Artemide’s project is both research and culture, starting from the gathering of constant technological innovation and a cultural approach.

Per questo motivo Artemide si è dotata negli anni di una struttura di ricerca e sviluppo dove trovano posto le più diverse e specializzate competenze tecniche, laboratori accreditati e sistemi di qualità certificati.Se da un lato l’innovazione si espleta nell’utilizzo dei LED e delle sorgenti a risparmio energetico, nell’uso di materiali e tecniche di produzione innovative, nell’attenzione all’efficienza e alla qualità della performance, dall’altro ricerca e innovazione tecno-logica sono intese in senso umanistico con l’obiettivo di dare continuamente un contributo alla qualità della vita dell’uomo e del pianeta. The numerous patents for inventions that accompany the development of Artemide’s products and the international awards in the field of innovation and sustainability are testament to the persistence of their projects for the future.Innovation is made of people, of their culture and skills, but above all it comes from continuous experimentation and from a shared vision. La luce, variando colore o temperatura, costruisce emozioni e relazioni. Le radiazioni luminose che raggiungono i nostri occhi vengono trasformate in impulsi elettrici e trasmesse, mediante il nervo ottico, al cervello. Da qui si origina una serie di input che vengono trasmessi a tutto l’organismo. In particolare, quando gli impulsi raggiungono l’ipotalamo, si determina un incremento della serotonina, neurotrasmettitore deputato al controllo del tono dell’umore. Quando gli impulsi raggiungono l’epifisi si assiste ad una riduzione della melatonina, ormone sensibile al ciclo giorno-notte. Conseguenza di tali reazioni neurofisiologiche è una variazione significativa del tono dell’umore in funzione della quantità e della qualità di luce a cui è esposto un individuo. Progettare la luce significa andare oltre l’aspetto puramente funzionale dell’illuminazione e abbracciare una dimensione più ampia che faccia capo a una nuova attenzione per l’esperienza percettiva. La conoscenza e consapevolezza di Artemide su questo tema, legate alle ricerche sviluppate dagli anni 90’ ad oggi con università, centri di ricerca, esperti di diverse discipline scientifiche (medicina, biologia, psicologia, antropologia) hanno portato allo sviluppo di sistemi di illuminazione innovativi. Metamorfosi, A.l.s.o. e My White Light sono sintesi tra innovazione tecnologica e attenzione all’uomo e ai suoi bisogni psicologici e fisiologici. Non sono prodotti ma mezzi per creare scenari luminosi variabili con cui interagire e vivere il rapporto con la luce in modo nuovo, più diretto e consapevole.

Progettare la luce significa andare oltre l’aspetto puramente funzionale dell’illuminazione e abbracciare una dimensione più ampia che faccia capo a una nuova attenzione per l’esperienza percettiva. La conoscenza e consapevolezza di Artemide su questo tema, legate alle ricerche sviluppate dagli anni 90’ ad oggi con università, centri di ricerca, esperti di diverse discipline scientifiche (medicina, biologia, psicologia, antropologia) hanno portato allo sviluppo di sistemi di illuminazione innovativi. Metamorfosi, A.l.s.o. e My White Light sono sintesi tra innovazione tecnologica e attenzione all’uomo e ai suoi bisogni psicologici e fisiologici. Non sono prodotti ma mezzi per creare scenari luminosi variabili con cui interagire e vivere il rapporto con la luce in modo nuovo, più diretto e consapevole.

By varying colour or temperature, light builds emotions and relationships.The radiations of light that reach our eyes are transformed into electric impulses and transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. From here a series of inputs are originated that are transmitted to the entire body. In particular, when the impulses reach the hypothalamus they bring about an increase in serotonin, a neurotransmitter that controls moods. When the impulses reach the epiphysis we have a reduction in melatonin, a hormone that is sensitive to the day-night cycle. The consequence of these neuro-physiological reactions is a significant variation in mood depending on the quantity and quality of light to which an individual is exposed.Designing a light for people means going beyond the purely functional aspects of lighting and embracing a broader dimension, with a new attention towards perceptive experience.Artemide’s knowledge and awareness on this topic have led to the development of innovative lighting systems. This is associated with the research developed from the 1990s to today with universities, research centres and experts in various scientific disciplines (medicine, biology, psychology, anthropology).

Metamorfosi, A.l.s.o. and My White Light are a synthesis of technological innovation and attention to people and their psychological needs. They are not products, but means of creating variable light settings to interact and experience the relationship with light in an aware and direct way.

Spectral Light by Philippe Rahm

“Electromagnetic impressionism”. In proposing a design of light spectra that will combine specifi c and distinct wavelengths, we have found ourselves using techniques comparable to the Impressionism of Claude Monet and the Pointillism of Georges Seurat.

In setting out to break up the units of reality, we are seekingto arrive at a new synthesis through a few electromagnetic chemical components.With this method we want to initiate a reappraisal of architecture and design, renouncing the picturesque in favor of a new synthesis of truth, economy and beauty.

We have adapted different spectra to the needs of the various“inhabitants” of the home (people, pets, birds, plants). We present the wavelengths of these spectra that are required to see, to grow and to photosynthesize.

Prompted by the current interest of design in the immaterial, we want to create a new spectrum of lights that conforms to biological and environmental values, by putting together wavelenghts that we can regard as healty, necessary and economic.
