Introduction

• DPFs trap the particulate matter before it can be exhausted

• Once the honeycomb filter captures enough particulate matter, flow becomes restricted

• Regeneration is the process of cleaning out the filter

C3.4B/854F - 3 Modes of Regeneration

• Passive RegenerationBackground process - no operator interaction

• Active RegenerationOperator action not required - Lamp will appear in the display, continue as usualThe engine can be stopped as needed but not because the lamp appearsWhen possible, allow the process to finish

• Forced RegenerationOperator action required to initiate Forced Regen using the display Lamps and warnings will appear in the displayFailure to Forced Regen will result in reduced engine power followed by engine shutdown

Excessive Idling Will Lead To Premature Soot Build Up In The DPF,

Passive Regeneration

• It is not an “Active” process• Happens automatically with no

operator interaction• Does not communicate any

information with the operator• It is a chemical reaction that happens

when exhaust temperatures are above 120C (250 F)• When Duty Cycle is such that Passive

Regeneration cannot reduce soot loading, machine will enter Active Regeneration when conditions are met

Page 5: Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration...Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration Strategies and User Interface Introduction • DPFs trap the particulate

Active Regeneration

• Active Regeneration will attempt to begin once Soot Levels have reached 90%• No action required by the operator,

The engine can be stopped as neededWhen possible, allow the process to finish• The lamp is a status indicator, not a trigger

to stop the engine• Once Active Regeneration has

commenced, the lamp indicates H.E.S.T. High Exhaust System Temperaturethis lamp is only informational

Page 6: Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration...Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration Strategies and User Interface Introduction • DPFs trap the particulate

Conditions for Active Regeneration• Soot Load above 90%• Coolant Temperature above 50C/122F• Engine Run Time above 2 min• Engine Speed above 1200 rpm

speed will maintain above 950 once Active Regeneration has started • DOC/DPF Inlet Temperatures are above 180°C (356°F)• Regeneration is not inhibited by operator• No active engine codes

Page 7: Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration...Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration Strategies and User Interface Introduction • DPFs trap the particulate

Conditions Causing Active Regeneration Issues

• Exhaust temperature drops between turbo and DOC/DPF Inlet• Engine load is insufficient for the required exhaust and/or coolant

temperature• Excessive idling - as shown in the conditions, engine will not enter

Active Regeneration at idle• Load• Idling

Page 8: Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration...Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration Strategies and User Interface Introduction • DPFs trap the particulate

Forced Regeneration

• Where machine did not have sufficient Passive & Active Regeneration cycles, a Forced Regeneration will be required• Forced Regeneration is operator controlled• During Forced Regeneration, ECU will take control of

engine speed and throttle valve, engine speed will raise to 2000rpm for 5-20minutes• Parking Brake must be applied, must be in Neutral - The

ECU must see a “Safe State” signal before allowing the Forced Regen• Must be in a safe and well ventilated area

Page 9: Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration...Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration Strategies and User Interface Introduction • DPFs trap the particulate

Conditions for Forced Regeneration

• Soot Load above 130% (cannot Force Regen with low soot load)• Coolant Temperature above 65 C / 149 F• Engine Running more than 10 seconds• Throttle Input less than 10%• Force Regen Button Depressed at least 2 seconds• Machine Idle State = Idle (Electronic Service Tool)• DPF Lamp will illuminate at 130% Soot Loading

Page 10: Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration...Liftking-Perkins Engines C3.4B & 854F Tier 4 Regeneration Strategies and User Interface Introduction • DPFs trap the particulate

Conditions for Forced Regeneration - Continued• If Soot Loading hits 170% and a regeneration has not been

performed, Warning Lamp will Illuminate (and DPF Lamp will remain illuminated)

• 25% engine derate will be invoked• Active Regeneration now becomes unavailable• Regeneration must now be Forced• At 230% soot loading, Shutdown Lamp should illuminate and engine

will be 55% derated. Engine should be shut down (or will, if Shutdowns Enabled in ECU). DPF Inputs no longer function.• Technician will be required at >230% soot loading to determine if DPF

can be recovered, or must be replaced

Input Operation and Symbols• DPF is in need of Regeneration

• HEST -> High Exhaust Temperature• Active Regeneration is underway• Forced Regeneration is underway

• DPF Regeneration has been inhibited

• Diagnostic Code is Present (Lvl 1)• Flashing: Engine Derate (Lvl 2)

• Engine will Derate• Engine will Shutdown (Lvl 3-when enabled)

In answer to the question “Request Diesel Particulate Filter Regen?” use Key 3 for Yes and Key 5 for No.

Regen (ONLY REQUIREDWITH EQUIPPEDWITH DPF)Follow these steps to initiate a Regen (ECU will determine when a Regen is required):

Regen Instructions

Follow these steps to change the Regen mode:

1. Press to display the Menu.

2. Press to Regen. Press to enter.3. If the engine ECU has inhibited a regeneration, the Regen Mode will display the current

mode of the engine regeneration as Inhibit.4. The AUTO REGEN button will be available to switch the engine to automatically

regenerate.5. If the engine ECU is currently on AUTO regeneration, the Regen Mode will display the

current mode of the engine regeneration as Auto.6. The INHIBIT REGEN button will be available to inhibit a regeneration if the engine is in

Active Regen.7. The regen mode will display N/A when ECU does not transmit a regen mode (SPN
