Resident Magazine is the premium publication in the Northern Territory with the highest sales through newsagents, out-selling

all national magazine titles with 5,000 copies sold per issue. Resident is published bi-annually in May and November and

provides exceptional value as a six month publication.

RESIDENT MAGAZINE IS THE BIGGEST SELLING MAGAZINE

IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY

Darwin NewsagencyIt’s really the best-selling mag I’ve seen… Resident outsells everything when it first

comes out; it literally flies off the shelves. And the build up – oh my God! It gets to the stage where I’m calling to ask where it is – they’re always asking for it at least a month before.

Tracey Wedel, Darwin Newsagency

NewsXpress ParapIt’s beyond compare with anything else in its first

week of sale time – when Resident hits the shelves it quadruples even Women’s Weekly. Resident’s also got

a considerably longer ‘tail wag’ than any other title on sale longer than a month; that is, where sales of

others peak sharply on release then flatten after the second week, Resident continues an elevated sales

line for months. Other local mags don’t cause a ripple. And this magazine really makes Northern Territorians.

They really can turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse.Philip Kobelt,

NewsXpress Parap

Leanyer NewsagencyOh it definitely sells much more quickly than

everything else… It’s the local content; people are always interested in reading about their Territory.

Everyone really anticipates each issue – customers always want to know when the next one’s coming.

And it’s just such a lovely magazine… beautiful photography and the gorgeous glossy finish.”

Robyn Wright, Leanyer Newsagency

Casuarina Nextra NewsIt’s incredible how our magazine sales rocket as soon as Resident is released. It’s also a steady seller throughout the year; we have it on the

counter as well as in priority positioning in the stands, and it just flies. It makes Darwin and the Territory look so glamorous, and it’s very well supported and professional with real local con-tent and product that everyone just loves. I’ve

never heard a bad word about it.Stephanie Cooke,

RESIDENTTRAVEL

MoVida is a must do when in Melbourne. Here you can taste the flavours of Spain where you are served with marinated meats so tender that you can cut them with a spoon.

It has taken us more than a few visits to Melbourne’s fine food scene to finally walk in the door of MoVida, opened in 2003 in the famous cobbled, graffiti covered Hosier Lane. It is a transformed pub, with MoVida Next Door on the corner, serving sizzling shellfish from the plancha. MoVida defines tapas and raciones (share plates); huge flavour in bite-sized portions and this is quite simply the key to the success of this place. There is a lot to get wrong in a small plate and they don’t. Add in the rustic warm timbers, upbeat tunes and spritely, jovial service headed by Darwin expat Geoffrey Kwist and the time melts away like the slow braised beef cheek in Pedro Ximenez on cauliflower puree, which is served with only a spoon to ‘cut’ it. We ordered two.Sit at the bar for attentiveness and knowledge and enjoy different glasses of wine or sangria while working your way through the menu. The Catalan style zucchini with sweet and sour raisins, pine nuts and stuffed zucchini flowers had the composition of a main course and the flavour of heaven. Now with a Surry Hills, Sydney location and Bakery, Paco’s Tacos and Aqui in Melbourne, o

Champagne is a metaphor for luxury and success. The flavour in every glass is enriched by the land of the

wine’s origin and its remarkable history. This twice fermented sparkling wine, in its native France, is laid down in the sculpted

caves of chalk beneath its mother maison for its second fermentation in the bottle. Then it is raised to the surface on the Cellar Master’s

call, to travel the length and breadth of the earth to herald and lubricate millions of celebratory occasions. For the people of Champagne it is not just their lifeblood but a life-giving

aperitif, enjoyed always, each and every day.

Neil Sunners, originally a carpenter, started work with the builders Barclay Mowlem in Brisbane in 1971. He was foreman for Barclays on a number of big projects in Queensland until, in 1984, he was asked to come to Darwin to manage the Sanderson High School job. Neil said he would stay for a year but before long he was content to stay forever. ‘In 1993, Desley and I decided to do something for ourselves so we started Sunbuild. At first we operated from a base under our house in Howard Springs, I had a desk in the laundry. A year later my friend and colleague from Barclays, Jim Eadie, and his wife Pam, joined us in the company. We were confident but we really didn’t have anything except faith in our own strengths and abilities’ Neil said.Sunbuild did well in the nineties, steadily growing as it built houses, schools, and commercial buildings, as well as major Defence contracts at Robertson Barracks and Tindal RAAF base. As it grew, the company carefully nurtured what Neil and Jim see as their most precious assets - the goodwill of clients and the loyalty of employees. Then there was a stern test when an economic slump cut building work by half. In 2003, Sunbuild decided to make its own work when it started building Balmoral apartments on its own account. It was the turning of the tide. Before long, Sunbuild was at work on such projects as Admiralty Towers and Lameroo units, as well as the Bunnings stores. Then came Evolution, a 33 storey $65 million apartment development, the eighth project that Sunbuild had developed on its own account. It was a landmark for the company and it punched Darwin’s sky.Sunbuild then grew apace as the economic tempo quickened. ‘The really pleasing thing is that we are getting a lot of repeat business from clients’ Neil says. ‘We learned a lot from our own developments and we have now got very powerful expertise and experience. We apply that for our clients. We can give them the full package, from documentation through the approvals and construction phase, right through to completion and handover. And we don’t walk away from a job when it is completed, we accept our post-construction responsibilities and we are always here if a client feels that there are any issues that we should be fixing’ Neil told Resident.Jim Eadie’s career path has been similar to Neil’s. He worked with Barclay Mowlem in Brisbane before that company sent him to Katherine in 1987 to supervise construction of the Katherine High School. ‘I think our success is due to a lot of little things’ Jim says, ‘but essentially it’s about people, the people you work with and for.’‘We are not project managers, we are old-fashioned contractors and we try to hold a core

team of people together, through thick and thin. When we hire people the first question is “will they fit in?” I look for the right personality, harmony in our team is vital, we want people who can work with everyone else. Technical capacity is second to that. We like to invest in apprentices, groom them right from the start. They absorb the company culture. We have now got former apprentices working with us in senior positions and they are training the next generation’ Jim said. The first of those apprentices was Joe Martin, who started with Sunbuild in 1996. Now, Joe is a site foreman and supervisor. ‘It was like joining a family, it was small show then, but the family environment is still there, we all try to help one another. I was an apprentice carpenter and joiner, that is the basic trade on a building site, you eventually get to do everything except the plumbing and electrical. I got a really good foundation from my apprenticeship. Most of all I learned to take responsibility for myself and my work. That is something I try to pass on to the apprentices who now work with me. If they fit in, they have the opportunity to do what I have done, to stay with the company and to progress’ Joe said. That’s the way that Sunbuild develops its workforce. The same principle applies to the company’s plant and equipment. ‘We like to be self-contained. Other companies contract out a lot of their work, we don’t. We like to be in control, independent of sub-contractors. For the same reason we own all the essential equipment, including four tower cranes, hoists, concrete pumps and formwork. It all takes more time than hiring the equipment, but it is a better system, it works’ Jim Eadie told Resident. Sunbuild’s own experience as a developer has enabled it to help many clients save on costs while achieving a better result. That is one of the factors that has won the company prized jobs such as The Avenue and the Paspaley building. ‘It’s all go down at the Livingstone abattoir site too’ Jim Eadie says. ‘That is a very important project, sophisticated and technically very challenging. It’s the first new

meatworks to be built in Australia for more than 40 years. It will be a very modern process plant where animals come in on the hoof and go out in a box. There will be absolutely no waste. It is a very different project, but one that will be very rewarding. It will be a great project for the Territory’ Jim says. That sentiment probably summarises what is so special about Sunbuild. Their driver is the honour and the challenge of doing an iconic job as well as it can be done. Honour, not financial reward, comes first.

It’s just twenty years since Neil and Desley Sunners started the spectacularly successful building company, Sunbuild. Today, the company has about 230 employees and $200 million worth of work currently underway, including the landmark projects The Avenue, the Livingstone abattoir and the Paspaley building in the city. It’s yet another case of enterprise and vision flourishing in the Territory environment.

Wicked NRG has filled a niche by supplying sports supplements at internet prices, quality Australian vitamins at discounted prices, and recently, a new range of bulk organic wholefoods.‘We have built up a very loyal customer base and when people started asking me for branded Wicked NRG clothing I took notice’ Vanessa says, ‘After a lot of research into finding the right style and fabrics for the Darwin climate, we finally launched our first Wicked NRG Wicked LIFE range at the Health Fitness &

The range includes ladies’ and men’s training singlets, hoodies and skins, men’s training shorts and sleeveless tanks. Wicked NRG is now also stocking gym/streetwear T shirts and hoodies by SciTec Nutrition and Bulletproof. There have been thirteen years of commitment for Malcolm Green (Greenie) and Ursula Kupfer since 2000, when they started selling local produce at the Coolalinga markets.

10TEN YEARS OF COMMUNITY SUPPORTGREENIES

From the beginning, Malcolm and Ursula both believed that a natural approach to farming was the way to go. They soon found that there was a keen demand for natural and organic produce, ‘but it was hard work, taking produce to markets loaded in foam boxes and packed with ice’ Ursula says. In 2003 they took the plunge and opened a shop in Rapid Creek Business Village so that they could avoid the uncertainty of restricted weekend trading with perishables and also provide a wider organic range to the community.Due to customer demand, new suppliers were found and the business grew. The shop was expanded in 2007 and again in 2009.Greenies Real Food is now Darwin’s only health food retailer of fresh organic produce and bulk whole foods. The business has become an organic supermarket, trading seven days each week and offering a vast range of organic goodies, including local eggs. ‘We carry local produce whenever possible but we do have to bring stock up from the south. We buy directly from growers and that helps us to keep costs down. Most people realise that you do pay a little more for genuine organic produce. It is more labour intensive to grow and there are strict

certification requirements.’‘Buying organic is worth it’ Ursula says. ‘It tastes better, it is more nutritious, there are no poisons or hormones. I believe in the age old sayings “you are what you eat” and “prevention is better than cure.” Therefore, if you eat fresh organic food your body will be nourished and you will have less illness and fewer allergies.’Greenies has been supplying remote communities for more than a decade and it also supplies schools, proudly supporting the Healthy Kids programs. In 2010, Malcolm and Ursula won the Telstra Business Awards Social Responsibility Award. ‘That was very encouraging, it was great to get recognition for what we do’ Ursula said.Greenies launched online shopping through its website in 2012, enabling local and remote customers to have the convenience of ordering online and having goods delivered.‘Thanks to all our loyal customers and to our staff for all your wonderful support over the years - we couldn’t have done it without you guys!’ Ursula says.Greenies Real Food, Shop 12 -14 Rapid Creek Shopping Village, 48 Trower Road, Rapid Creek. At its busiest the commercial kitchen will employ 20 chefs and 25 kitchen staff who will serve up to 1750 meals per hour, with all food sourced from local suppliers.

A significant and much-anticipated milestone for the Ichthys Project was the official opening in September of the accommodation village at Howard Springs. Opened by INPEX and Ichthys Project senior management in the presence of Northern Territory Chief Minister, the Hon Adam Giles MLA, Manigurr-ma Village takes its name from the Larrakia word for Stringy Bark and it will be home to up to 3,500 of the Project’s construction workforce over the next four years.

The $9 million contract includes earthworks, drainage, heavy-duty pavements, bitumen and sealing works, and a significant upgrade to the intersection of Jenkins and Channel Island roads. East Arm Civil Managing Director Scott Chapman said it was an excellent job for his company to secure as it had recently returned to Darwin following a lengthy stint in Gove. ‘It’s really a great continuation of what we do, and it’s been really good to step back into Darwin to get a job of this size and scope’, Mr Chapman said. ‘We are employing up to 25 people on site, a number of whom are Indigenous trainees, and we are getting really solid performance results.’In a significant step, a joint venture of Macmahon and John Holland has been awarded a $340 million contract for site development civil works on Blaydin Point. The landmark contract includes earthworks, drainage and ground improvement works for the site and presents a significant stream of opportunities for Northern Territory sub-contractors, once the massive project is broken down into smaller jobs. Both companies have extensive histories in the Northern Territory, and are committed to providing opportunities for local business. Macmahon Chief Executive Officer Nick Bowen said Macmahon’s strong connection to the Northern Territory was an important part of their success in securing this project. ‘The Ichthys LNG Project win reinforces Macmahon’s

strong reputation of being at the forefront of major infrastructure establishment for resources projects across Australia’, Mr Bowen said.Another company with a long history in the Territory, Laing O’Rourke, has won the contract for a $260 million construction package for the accommodation village in Howard Springs. One of Australia’s leading construction firms, Laing O’Rourke helped deliver a range of major infrastructure projects over the past 50 years, including the Darwin Convention Centre. The firm has a permanent office in Darwin and is committed to using local employees and subcontractors wherever possible. All these contracts are in addition to the $100 million INPEX has spent in Darwin getting the project ready.Growing a local workforce is essential in meeting the massive demand of the project in the NT, and organisations like Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Larrakia Trade Training Centre are focused on delivering targeted education and training measures. CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover said through the establishment of the North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas, the university was building the capacity to generate a workforce for the long haul to support the industry. ‘We have an opportunity to train a workforce... not just for the construction phase but also for the long-term operation

of the plant.’ CDU already offers a range of engineering and VET courses relevant to the oil and gas industry, along with new courses such as the Associate Degree in Process Engineering, designed in consultation with industry. CDU is also offering a certificate course in process operations. This is the entry qualification for the people that actually run the LNG plants. The $6 million centre will progress research into the new areas of process engineering and process operations, and maintenance and asset management. The centre received $3 million in funding from the Ichthys Project to get it up and running.Territorians are also being trained for construction projects at the Larrakia Trade Training Centre, an initiative designed to boost Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander involvement in developments. The Ichthys Project has thrown its support behind the training facility by donating $3 million to support its construction. The centre offers an extensive range of practical courses open to everyone, including metal fabrication, welding programs, civil construction, general construction as well as electrical and refrigeration training. Larrakia Development Corporation Chairman Nigel Browne said students across northern Australia now had access to more trade skills here in Darwin.
