Day 4

Topic: Social and economic needs.

First we need to define the term community. It can be defined as a group of

people or a gathering of people.

Common examples are your family, neighbourhood, school province and even

your country. In each of these communities you as a person and the

community have certain needs.

The first is Basic needs: this is the basics that you cannot live without like

water food and shelter. (This is what you need to be able to survive.)

Social needs are the needs of a group of people like education, transport and

security

Economic needs are best defined as “Money” you need to have money to be

able to pay for your social and basic needs.

These needs are fulfilled or met through Goods and Services.

Goods is defined as this that get used or touched such as food and clothes

Services are linked to actions people take like cutting hair.

Please do activity 11.2 on page 64 you need to complete the table.

On the left side you will see a list of needs of a community you need to

provide at least two examples of what goods and services meet these needs

e.g. if the need is Transport the service would be Busses or trains.

Day 5

Topic: Employment and how it meets your needs

Today you need to ask yourself where money comes from to meet all the

needs we have seen yesterday. Yes the government does provide us with

certain needs.

Where does the government get the money to provide these needs?

TAX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We all heard this term but what does it mean?

We are going to focus on three main Taxes

Income Tax- This is when you are working and earning a salary then you pay a

certain percentage of your salary to the government.

Company Tax- this works the same as income tax but now it’s the tax a

business pay to keep running.

Value-added Tax (VAT) - this tax is automatically added to anything you pay for

or buy.

All tax is paid to SARS (the South African Revenue Service.

Go through page 66 and 67 and summarise the content about how people

contribute positively to the economy.

The Word box is extremely important .

Socially we interact and deal with people each and every day this is called your

have a big influence on your self- concept.

Factors that can expose you to substance abuse can be poverty, peer pressure,

unstable family background and the lack of supervision just to name a few

For today you need to do Activity 13.1 on page 78 in your textbook and write

and write your full length opinions and concerns about the bullet points in

Day 11

Topic: Refusal and decision making skills

Refusal skills are defined as skills that help you to avoid participating in risk

behaviours. Ideally thy ultimate goal of this is to be confident enough to say

“No” if you feel uncomfortable.

Some of the techniques include:

Make a joke about it

Make an excuse

Ignore the suggestion

But as young children that want to fit in with a group this becomes a difficult

task and we tend to fall under peer pressure this is where decision making is

the most important skill of all time.

By now you have learned the I.D.E.A.L or S.T.D.E methods of problem solving

and I want to introduce you to the 6 thinking hats by Eduard de Bono. Study

this and know what goes where.

Day 14: Knowing the dangers and how to protect myself (From Spot On)

Day 15

Topic: Where to find help/ Rehabilitation options

Habits form easily and we all know it’s hard to unlearn this is the same for

addiction.

It involves many hours of patience, discipline, commitment, care and support.

In a fast paced world like we live in there is no quick fix for addiction otherwise

we start to run from addiction to addiction to get rid of the previous addiction.

We get many facilities and programmes that help with this process like

treatment centres, local support groups, recover houses, counselling and

medical care centres. At the end of the day the most important support you

will ever get is from your family and friends. It’s always important not to judge

them but be firm with them.

On page 84 in our textbook you will see 3 treatment programs make a list of

other possible treatment programs (at least 10)
