Have A Holly Jolly Conservative Christmas Consumers are prepared for a holly, jolly holiday season, though it’s evident most will take a conservative approach with their gift-giving budgets. According to National Retail Federation’s holiday consumer spending survey, the average holiday shopper will spend $749.51 on gifts, décor, greeting cards and more.

According to the survey, the biggest portion of shoppers’ budget this year will go towards gifts for family members with the average person planning to spend $421.82 on children, parents, aunt, uncles and more. Additionally, people will spend $75.13 on friends, $23.48 on co-workers and $28.13 on others, such as pets and community members. The average person will spend $51.99 on decorations, the most in the survey’s history. Total spending on holiday décor will reach $6.9 billion.

When it comes to holiday wish lists, the usual culprits top the list: clothing, books, DvDs, video games, and electronics, but there’s one that stands out more than any other – gift cards. According to the survey, six in 10 of those polled say they’d like to receive gift cards this year, the most in the survey’s history.

More than half of Americans this holiday season will feel the impact of the economy and will compensate by doing what they’ve been doing for several years – looking for ways to cut any corners, comparative shop online and in stores more often. Three in 10 consumers affected by the economy will comparative shop online more often, 46.4 percent will shop for sales more often, 23.2 percent will travel less or not at all, and 6.0 percent will comparative shop using their mobile device. Protect What Matters The Christmas season is here, which means we can look forward to a lot of decorating, parties and possibly some travel during the next few months. With all the hustle and bustle of shopping and celebrating, it's important not to lose sight of the safety of your family and home.

You'll be expecting guests more frequently and your house will be filled with beautiful, but highly flammable, decorations. These range from the candles on your dining room table to the tree in your living room to the paper decorations on your walls. All of these items can contribute to potentially unsafe conditions in your home.

To keep your family and house safe and still enjoy all the festivities, keep in mind these simple precautions:

1. Always make sure burning candles are never left unattended (blow them out if you leave the room) and are placed at least 12 inches away from flammable objects. Candleholders should be sturdy and placed on a stable, uncluttered surface.

2. Check your smoke alarms monthly. They should be installed in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your house. Replace the batteries in all of your smoke alarms at least once a year.

3. The holidays also mean travel for some families, and it's important to make sure your house is safe while you're away. Consider a home security and automation system that offers comprehensive protection inside and out, such as ADT Pulse. This innovative, customizable system allows you to control your lights, lock your doors, adjust your thermostats and watch your pets from wherever you happen to be via a computer or smartphone.

4. Make sure your decorations are safe. Only use items that are flame resistant or flame retardant, and avoid placing them near doorways or windows.

5. Have your chimney cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Use a fireplace screen to contain any sparks or hot embers. Once you put the fire out, let ashes cool, and then transfer them to a metal container with a lid. This should be kept at a safe distance from your house.

With the help of some common-sense safety precautions and a good security system, you'll be able to enjoy all the fun and festivities of the holiday season, whether you're hosting or traveling. (BPT)

Helping Veterans Stay In Their HomesEven in today’s housing market, the American dream remains a reality for most veterans.

The Department of veterans Affairs (vA) has guaranteed 20 million home loans since its program was established in 1944 as part of the original gI Bill of Rights for returning World War II veterans. The program has grown significantly in the past five years. Currently, there are 1.7 million vA-guaranteed home loans in existence with a total value of $284 billion.

The program makes home ownership more affordable for eligible veterans, service members and surviving spouses by permitting no-down-payment loans with no requirement for mortgage insurance—features that will alone save borrowers whose loans originated in the past year $13 billion over the life of their loans. vA loans are also attractive within the mortgage industry

because they protect lenders from loss if the borrower fails to repay the loan.

Mortgages guaranteed by vA have had the lowest foreclosure rate for the last 17 quarters and the lowest delinquency rate for the last 14 quarters compared to all other types of home loans in the nation, including prime loans, according to a report by the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Much of the strength of vA’s home loan program stems from the efforts of vA and its industry partners nationwide to ensure that veterans receive every possible opportunity to remain in their homes and avoid foreclosure. Since 2009, vA’s efforts have resulted in more than $8 billion in savings to taxpayers in foreclosure avoidance.

“At the center of the home loan guaranty program is the idea that veterans and their families are a safe bet,” said Allison A. Hickey, vA’s Under Secretary for Benefits. “As a result of their service and sacrifice, as a group, they prove to be disciplined, reliable and honorable-traits that are ideal for this kind of national investment.”
