Moving challenges Dishes, tables, and mirrors have long been among the items most likely to be broken during a move. Modern technology, however, has added new challenges to moving day. Poplar items such as Tvs, computers and home entertainment systems are especially susceptible to major damage when jostled or dropped.

One simple solution is to repack your gadgets in the boxes and materials they were in when you purchased them. If you’ve already disposed of the original boxes, look for moving companies that sell reusable moving kits specially designed for items such as flat screens and home theater products.

Front loading washers are among the most damage-prone items in a move, warns Rob Ursino, manager of Movers Specialty Service. “They’re a new phenomenon in the last 10 or 15 years. They have a spinning drum that has to be suspended properly during a move.” A broken washer can cause a significant amount of water damage and the tricky part is, you may not realize there is an issue until it’s too late. Before moving a front-loading washer, Ursino recommends the purchase of a manufacturer’s shipping kit which locks the washer’s drum in place and minimizes transit damage.

Always refer to the manufacturer's guide before moving major items - and check with your insurance company to make sure you're adequately covered for moving day. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
