Evacuation Procedures – RE-CAP

• Understand the evacuation plan.• Recognize the sound of the evacuation alarm.• Know at least two ways out of the building from your regular work space.

When you hear the evacuation alarm or are told to evacuate the building:• Remain calm and Leave quickly.• As you exit, quickly check nearby restrooms, study rooms, closets, etc. • Accompany and help handicapped personnel, visitors, and any co-workers whoappear to need direction or assistance. • Take with you: your car keys, purse, briefcase, etc., if nearby. Do not attempt to take large or heavy objects.• Shut all doors behind you as you go. Closed doors can slow the spread of fire, smoke and water. • Proceed as quickly as possible, but in an orderly manner. Do not push or shove. Hold handrails when you are walking on stairs. • Once out of the building, move away from the structure. • Go to the evacuation site designated for your area. Do not block roadways that emergency vehicles might use. • As staff and volunteers must be accounted for promptly. Assist your building and floor coordinators in getting a complete head count of your area. Remain in the evacuation area.

GENERAL SAFETY

If you notice an unsafe situation,

please report it to your

supervisor.

Page 16: Library Student Employee Safety Training

Slips, trips, and falls:

– Falls are the number one leading cause of injury in

the workplace.

– A major cause of falls in the workplace is the use of

improper lifting techniques.

Page 17: Library Student Employee Safety Training

Proper Lifting Tips

• Assess the situation and plan the lift.

• Make sure you have nonskid shoes and firm footing.

• Bend your knees, tighten your stomach, and keep your

back straight.

• Make sure you have a good grip on the item you’re

lifting (this isn’t a good time for hand lotion).

• Lift smoothly. A smooth lift means that you avoid

twisting your body, point your feet in the direction you

want to go, and push if possible rather than pull.

Page 18: Library Student Employee Safety Training

• Use a proper step stool.

• Do not use chairs or furniture to reach items above your head.
