Station 1: Encyclopedia

In the REFERENCE SECTION, find the MacMillan Compendium of World Religions. In the overview of Japanese Religion, read through the first paragraphs and answer the following questions:

During the “Nara Period”, which religion was the imperial court eager to promote “as the religion best suited for the protection of the state”?

1. What was by far the most influential religious sect during the Ashikaga period in Japan?

2. What was the date and publication of this encyclopedia?

Station 2: Dictionaries

3. In the REFERENCE section located near the window, find a dictionary. Look up, and then write down the definition of the following words: democracy, caucus, inflation, and reciprocity.

4. Find the Collins Spanish Dictionary. Look up, and then translate the following English words: station, hero, and gift.

5. Find the LeRobert & Collins Le dictionnaire de Reference. Look up, and then translate the following English words: beautiful, hero, and laborious.

Station 3: Atlases

In Ruth Ozeki’s novel A Tale For The Time Being, there is reference to “Desolation Sound Marine Park”.

In the REFERENCE SECTION, find The Oxford Atlas of North America, then find Desolation Sound Marine Park.

6. Turn to that page. Name the small city closest to this area.

Find the location of Whistler on this map.

7. What is its approximate elevation?

8. Look in the index and write down the page number and coordinates where it can be found.

In the same REFERENCE SECTION, find the Firefly Great World Atlas.

9. Look in the index and write down the page where British Columbia can be found. Turn to that page. What is the symbol used to indicate elevation above sea level (mountain height)?

10. What are the three major passes cut through the Rocky Mountains? What is the highest peak in Canada? How tall is it?

Station 4: Reference

In the REFERENCE SECTION find The Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature (call number R 819.03 OXF).

Look up Alice Munro (names are in alphabetical order.)

11. Where did Alice Munro study before moving to the west coast?

12. What did her husband do for a

living?

13. Name of some of the awards she has won for her writing. What is the most recent award not listed in

this book?

14. What are some of the books Alice Munro has

written?

Station 5: Non-Fiction Books

15. Go to the Fiction section and find Reena: A Father’s Story (call number 364.152 VIR). You will notice a yellow dot near the call number. What do you think this indicates?

16. a. To whom is this book dedicated? b. Read the first few pages. Where does this story take place? c. What do think the book is about?

Station 6: Non-fiction Books: Biography

17. In the NON-FICTION BOOKS, find this book: John A: The Man Who Made Us (call number 921 MAC).

a. Who is John A. MacDonald?b. Who is the author of this book?c. What other books has he written? d. Write down the first sentence of the book in the introduction. Where and when was this quotation

published?e. In one or two sentences, tell what you think this

sentence means.

Station 7: Fiction Books18. In the FICTION BOOK SECTION, find this book: Russsian Winter by Daphne Kalotay (call number FIC KAL).

a. Look at the inside cover. In one or two sentences, tell what you think the story is about.

b. Look at the title page. Who is the book’s

publisher?

c. Look at the back of the title page. When was the book published? (In other words, what is the copyright date? )

d. How many pages does the book have?

e. Look at the back cover. Where does the author live?

Station 8:Book Club Collection

19. In the BOOK CLUB SECTION of the library, which sticker colours are designated novels for grades 9 and 10, and which colours are suggested for grades 11 and 12? Find any book suggested for your grade level.

a. Look at the spine label. What is the call number?b. Look at the title page of the book. Who is the book’s publisher?c. Look at the back of the title page. When was the book published? (In other words, what is the copyright date? )d. How many pages does the book have?e. Look through the collection. Read the synopsis on the back of as many books as time allows. Write the names and authors of three books that caught your attention and you might want to read in

book club this year.

Station 10: Online Resources

Here is our home page:

Go to the “Welcome to your Library” icon on the library website. Click on “Catalogue”. Your page should look like this:

20. Click on the Oak Bay Secondary School link. In the search box, type,“The Grapes of Wrath” then click on “title”. How many copies published in

1999 are available to sign out from the library?

21. Click on “Catalogue” again, and in the search box, type “Hitler” then “Subject”. Approximately nine books show up in the search. What do all the

call numbers have in common?

22. Click on “Catalogue” again, and in the search box, type “Hitler” then “Keyword”. What is the difference between searching for the “Subject” and

the “Keyword”?

Again, go to the “Welcome to your Library” icon on the library website. Click on “Catalogue”. Your page should look like this:

Click on the “Overdrive E-Books and Audio-Books” . A sign in box will appear that looks like this. Where it asks for “Library card number”, enter your student number. Where it asks for “Password”, enter your birthdate in the form of year, month, date (19961206).

Congratulations! You have now entered our Overdrive E-Book & Audio-Book Library, and you can begin the first step in signing out digital resources. Your

screen will look something like this:

23. Click on “Fiction” and your screen will look something like this. As you scroll down the page, you will see a heading on the bottom left side labelled, “Project Gutenberg: E-Books always available”. Click on to this website and see which E-Books are available. How many books are available to sign out? Continue spending time in our Digital Library until you are familiar with it. Please do not try to sign out books at this time.

To sign out E-Books or Audio-Books:

1. You can either find what you are looking for on any computer in the library, but if you want to borrow one, you must use the designated computer near

the sign out desk.

2. Ask a librarian to help either download the Overdrive App onto your own device, or sign out one of our Kobo readers if one is available.

• Click on “Other Libraries”. Click on the icon “Greater Victoria Public Library”.

• Where is the Oak Bay branch located? How do you get a library card? Remember, with your card, you can also download many free E-Books from any Victoria library.

Go back to “Welcome” and click on “World Web Tutorials”. Click on “Cybersmart”. Watch this 18 minute video to better understand the impact of cyber-bullying.

Click on “Online Resources”, then “Multi-Subject”. Notice that passwords are included for certain websites. Your page should look like this:

Click on at least four of the resources under “Multi-Subject” and see what information is available. When you’ve completed, go back to “Online Resources”, scroll down and click on at least three other links to see the contents.

27. Go back to the “Welcome to your Library” icon on the library website.

Click on “World Web Tutorials”.

Click on “Embrace Civility in the Digital Age”.

Click on “Be a Friend- Lend a Hand”.

What do the five hand icons represent?

Click on “Our Ed Tech Tool Box”, then click on the Oak Bay Logo to find categories of various Tech Tools.
