Library Information for Sixth Form
So you’re in the 6th Form, and what’s different about the
Library? Using the Library during study periods?
Please remember ...
Coats and bags should be left outside.
The Library is a food and drink free zone. If you want to eat or drink please go to the Sixth Form
Centre, Quad or Dining Hall.
Switch your mobile off please.
Sign in – this is important, it’s a fire register.
You can listen to your iPod but other Library users may not share your taste in music so keep the
volume down
Please maintain a quiet atmosphere – other people are trying to work.
How can I find books and resources in the Library?
1. Use Searchstar – the Library catalogue is available on any School networked computer. It lists not only
books available in the Library but also useful websites so it is an excellent place to start your research
into any topic. You can access the catalogue via Internet Explorer.
Open Internet Explorer
Select the Favourites menu
Select Library Portal
Once Eclipse is open select Search and type in your topic or keyword in the search box at the top
of the screen.
Ask the Librarians for assistance or have a look at the instructions displayed on the wall in the Library
and in the Sixth Form Centre, on the Library webpages, blog and wiki (addresses to right).
2. Use the Subject Catalogue available in the Reference Section.
3. Ask the Librarians.
How many books can I borrow and how long for?
6 books for 2 weeks, then please renew or return them.
What happens if I forget to bring a book back?

You will get a reminder via email and your form tutor – please don’t ignore it, someone else may be
waiting for the book. If you have lost the book, look under your bed or on your bookshelf at home. If it
still doesn’t materialise come and talk to the Librarians about it.
Study Skills tips
Have a look at the following websites:
Study skills websites
The Library Webpages on school website: www.kings.lincs.sch.uk (under School Information section)
Look for the 6th Form and Careers pages in particular.
Read around your subject and beyond, don’t just stick to the
recommended text book
Read newspapers and subject-related journals for up-to- date
information
Don’t just Google it
Always use a balance of books and internet for your essay research.
Carry out proper Boolean searches – help is available at www.googleguide.com or ask the Librarians.
Evaluate the websites that you are using. Ask yourself who created it, when, for what purpose, is it
trustworthy information? Any websites used for an essay must be properly cited in any bibliography. See
the Referencing page for advice on how to reference correctly.
