Introduction / Features The BFS LG/LA/LZ-series is a globe type single seat, top entry control valve with a fabricated extension for cold box
cryogenic service applications to -218℃ (-425). SG-series bodies are constructed of bronze or austenitic stainless steel
for high impact strength at low temperature and minimum heat transfer. SGCR-series is designed for high flow capacity
with a minimum of mass to reduce boil-off on valve cool-down.
The LG/LA/LZ-series extension design permits easy access and removal of the valve trim without breaking down the cold
box. During operation, a small amount of liquified gas passes in to the extension bonnet area area where it vaporizes and
insulates the packing from the liquified gas temperature. The pressure resulting from the vaporization of the liquid
prevents additional liquid from passing into the bonnet area
The SGCR-series is equipped with a standard, high performance multi-spring-diaphragm actuator or cylinder actuator,
providing high thrust for tight shut-off and exceptionally accurate control

3. Inherent Flow Characteristics Equal Percentage
Equal percentage is the characteristic, most commonly
used in process control. The change in flow per unit of
valve stroke is directly proportional to the flow occurring
just before the change is made. While the flow
characteristic of the valve may be equal percentage, most
control loops produce an installed characteristic, which
approaches linear when the overall system pressure drop
is large relative to that across the valve.
Linear
Linear inherent characteristic produces equal changes in
flow per unit of valve stroke regardless of plug position.
Linear plugs are used on those systems where the valve
pressure drop is a major portion of the total system
pressure drop.
Quick Open
Quick-open plugs are used for on-off service and are
primarily designed to produce maximum flow quickly.
Modified-%
flow characteristic that lies somewhere between linear and
equal percent. It provides fine throttling at low flow
capacity and an approximately linear characteristic at
higher flow capacity.

4. Feature of LG/LA/LZ-Series
4-1. LG/LA-Series
Standard Extension Bonnet Globe & Angle Body
Reliability and ease of maintenance are essential features
of any good control valve and to this end the BFS range
of cryogenic valves have been kept as simple as possible.
The number of components has been kept to a minimum
and ease of access to the trim is straight forward through
the removal of the bonnet retaining nuts and lifting of the
complete bonnet and plug assembly.
Bodies are normally supplied in stainless steel or bronze
with a stainless steel extension of a suitable length for the
installation position and temperature as low as -218℃
(-425). The extension can be fitted with a cold-box
flange of any shape / size required.
Trim construction is based on the traditional BFS top
guided welded seat or screwed in renewable seat design
and incorporates a soft seal in TFE or FEP when bubble
tight shut-off is required. Other types of trim such as
balanced cage are available when required. End
connections can be flanged, screwed, socket or butt weld
ends plus pipe stubs as necessary. All body components
are cleaned and degreased suitable for oxygen service
and the end connections suitably masked after testing to
prevent ingress of foreign matter / moisture.

Aluminium Bodied Extension Bonnet Z-Body
LZ-Series / Cryogenic Service Aluminium Body
For cryogenic cold-box installation with aluminium pipe
lines this valve can be welded in and overcome the need
for transition pipe pieces or flanged connections.
Both socket and butt weld connections are available
together with extended pipe stubs if required.
Apart from the body material the design and other
components are basically identical to the standard BFS
cryogenic bolted bonnet design.
The number ofcomponents has been kept to a minimum
and ease of access to the trim is stright forward through
the removal of the bonnet and plug assembly. The bonnet
extension is manufactured from stainless steel to a
suitable length to suit the installation position and
temperature as low as -218℃ (-425). A cold box flange
of any shape size can be fitted as required.
Trim construction is based on the traditional BFS top
guided screwed in renewable single seat design and
incorporates a soft seal in TFE-teflon or FEP-teflon when
bubble tight shut-off is required. Other types of trim such
as balanced cage are available when required. All body
components are cleaned and degreased suitable for
oxigen service and the end connections suitably masked
after testing to prevent the ingress of foreign matter
moisture.

4-3. LZ-Series
Extension Body
Further development of aluminium bodied cold box valves
has brought about a design that can provide far easier
access from outside a box wall. This is particulary useful
when modern insulation material such as perlite is used.
The bonnet flange is located at a suitable distance inside
the box which permits access via secondary insulation that
is retained within a fibre glass 'sock'. Apart from the
obvious benefits connected with installation cost savings
the other major impact is the savings the other major
impact is the saving on shipping volume when actuators
/extensions are removed for transporting a cold box from
a fabricator to the site location.
Materials of construction are in keeping with other similar
BFS designs with the stainless steel bonnet extension
being manufactured to a suitable length to suit an
inclined installation and process temperatures as low as
-218℃ (-425). A sliding weatherproof or welded cold-
box flange of any size or shape can be fitted as required.
The types and capacities of trim available are the same as
that offered with all other BFS valves and incorpates a
renewable seat as standard. For heat exchanger bypass
applications this design is also provided in a 3-way body
configuration.
LZ-Series / Cryogenic Service Extension Body
4-4. LGTE/LATE-Series
Top Entry Extension Bonnet Body
LG-Series / Cryogenic Service Top Entry Extension Bonnet Body
This type of valve was introduced primarly to satisfy the
requirements of cryogenic hydrocarbon plant and
provides an all welded in construction thus preventing any
possibility of process leakage within the cold box whilst
giving full access to the valve trim for maintenance from
outside the cold box.
Body connections are normally machined to suit socket or
butt weld ends.
The specially designed cast body incorporates an
extension bonnet of any desired length to suit the
installation position and temperatures as low as -218℃
(-425). Where temperatures below -200℃ (-300) are
involved, consideration should be given to using a
vacuum jacket to minimise cold loss. Special consideration
has been given to minimise cold transfer convection by
the fitting of deflectors on the plug stem and the
positioning of the bonnet flange relative to the cold-box
fabrication. The extended bonnet is sized to facilitate the
removal of the valve trim without the expense and
laborious exercise of stripping out insulation The types
and capacities of trim available are the same as that
offered with a standard cryogenic valve and incorporate a
renewable seat as standard.
6
5. Trim Construction 5-1. Standard Unbalanced
Standard Unbalanced BFS trim consists of a top guided
plug with a valve use an integral seat machined in to the
body or cage guided quick change trim application seat.
Flow capacity can typically be adjusted by changing the
shape of the plug head. Valves with small capacities or
renewable seats use screwed seat-rings.
The metal-to-metal seat provides longer-lasting, reliable,
tight shutoff at both ambient and cryogenic temperatures
without the need for periodic lapping. This eliminates the
need for soft seats, even in applications with the most
stringent shutoff requirements.
Single Port Unbalanced Plug Design
5-2. Soft Plugs for Unbalanced.
Bubble tight shut-off is achieved by inserting Teflon or
Kel-F onto the seating surface of the plug. Plug sizes up
to 1-1/2" use a threaded plug head design that clamps
the elastomeric insert between the plug head and the
plug stem. Leakage corresponding to this construction is
Class VI or ANSI B16. 104 (FCI 70-2), bubble tight. Soft
plug assemblies and standard plugs are interchangeable.
Soft Seat Application Plug Design
5-3. Velocity Control Cage
In order to overcome the damage caused by mild
cavitation a multi hole cage is installed in the manner
shown so that the flow passes from the outside through
the arranged pattern of characterised holes. This allows
the resulting jets to oppose themselves in the centre of
the cage and dissipate energy away from the trim itself.
Drilled Multi-Hole Velocity Control Cage
5-4. Pilot Balanced Cage
The high-capacity design CG and HG-Series valves with
pilot-balanced trim allow the use of smaller, lower cost
actuators, reducing installed costs in high pressure and
high-flow-rate applications.
Balanced valve plug construction in the design CG and HG
valves permits use of smaller, lower-cost actuators from
BFS.
6. Packing, Guiding, Gaskets & Others.
6-1. Gland Packing
Valve packing is readily accessible from outside the cold
box, and the bonnet flange bolting is located such that it
is accessible at or near the surface of the cold box.
Standard packing is Teflon V-rings. Glass-filled Teflon and
square Molded Graphite packing are optional.
7
Materials Temperature Centigrade
PTFE -240℃ to +232℃
PTFE filled non asbestos -212℃ to +272℃
Graphite -240℃ to +815℃
- Pugitive Emission Protection : The optional Live-
Loading Packing systems provide a superior stem seal to
prevent the loss of valuable or harzardous process fluids,
and keep emissions below the EPA limit of 500ppm.
Additionally, these Live-Loaded packing systems provide
longer life and reliability at low temperatures to reduce
maintenance costs and downtime.
Live Loading Packing System
6-2. Gaskets
The bonnet bottom is metal-to-metal in the body and
fully retains the bonnet gasket. Bonnet gasket
compression is determined by the depth of the gasket
step on the bonnet which is machined to provide the
compression required by the gasket. FEP and TFET Teflon
or Kel-F flat gaskets are used.
Type Material Temp. Centigrade
Flat PTFE -268℃ to +232℃
Flat Non Asbestos fiber -240℃ to +400℃
Flat Graphite -240℃ to +500℃
Flat Soft metal -200℃ to +425℃
Spiral Wound St. St. graphite -240℃ to +500℃
Spiral Wound St. St. PTFE -240℃ to +250℃
Metal 'O' ring St.St. silver coat. -200℃ to +800℃
6-3. Guiding
The two guides used in the packing box are easily
removed. The top guide also serves as the packing
follower. Both guides are spaced widly apart, improving
guiding. Glass-filled Teflon lined stainless steel or bronze
guides completely eliminate guide / stem galling. Solid
bronze or Stellite guides are available.
Materials Temperature Centigrade
Glass loaded PTFE -268℃ to +150℃
Bronze -268℃ to +260℃
Stellite -268℃ to +815℃
- Extended Guiding : Working on large stem diameters,
three widely spaced guides are used. The first is located in
the bottom flange, the second in the bottom of the
packing box and the packing follower, through its fine
machining tolerances, doubles up as a third guide.
- Extended Body Guiding : The principal of adequate
plug support ia also used in this design by retaining a
guide in the bottom of the body spacer. This also ensures
that during disassembly for fabrication/shipping the
complete internals are withdrawn as one. Upper guiding is
provided in the conventional way as described above.
- Top Entry Bonnet Guiding : In this design substantial
guiding occurs on the plug head and then in the packing
box itself with two widely spaced guides followed by the
packing follower which doubles up as a fourth area of
stem support.
6-4. Thoroughly Tested
Extensive cryogenic testing during the development of the
valve design eliminates the need for expensive cold
testing for most applications, which results in quicker
delivery and greater value.
6-5. Easy Maintenance
Quick change trim, with a clamped -in seat-ring, reduces
the disassembly / assembly time. The valve body can stay
in the pipeline during removal of trim parts for inspection
or maintenance.
6-6. Sour Gas Service Capability
For NACE applications, consult your BFS representative
sales office.
6-7. Seat Leakage / Soft Seated
All BFS valves are seat leak tested to the desired standard
after complete assembly. In general, all metal seated
valves achieve a substantially lower rate of leak than that
stipulated ANSI/FCI 70-2.
In case of soft seated trim a 'bubble' tight seal to Class VI
is achieved and in tests has been repeated after as many
as 250,000 continuous cycles.
When Leakage across the seat needs to be reduced to a
minimum or be bubble tight then a soft seat insert is
incorporated in to the plug. The main advantage of the
system of soft seat is that the seal itself is well out of the
main flow path when the valve is in the open position and
therefore much less prone to damage than if fitted in the
seating area. The normal materials for the seal are PTFE or
PTCFE and with this construction 'bubble tight' shut of is
achieved in accordance with class VI seat leakage.

General Description
The BFS Cryogenic valve meets the requirements of cryogenic processes requiring thermal insulation. An insulating
interface sets up between the valve body (cold zone) and the bonnet extension end located in the higher temperature
area (warm zone).
The valve body assembly and its thermal extension are positioned inside a "cold box"
The BFS Cryogenic servic application control valve model is similar to the SG-series, CG-series standard model, expect that
an extension bonnet, and a plug stem with enlarged length replace the standard bonnet and the standard plug stem.
All information regarding disassembly, main seat grinding, reassembly and adjustment described in instruction are
applicable, expect that the "cold box" must be opened prior to perform maintenance of the valve body subassembly.
Piping end Connection
The body of the BFS's cryogenic control valve must be flanged or butt welded on the line. The maximum allowable
pressure is stamped on the serial plate fixed on the yoke of actuator
Service Condition Limitation
Flow temperature: -200℃ to ambient temperature.
