The genesis of this project was the exploration ofthenatureofarachnidsinbothformandperformance,throughdrawing,sculpture,andmodel.Earlysculpturaliterationsfocusedonthethree-dimensionalbodiesofweb-weaving spiders; later iterations explored theprocessofwrappingindialoguewithsolidelementsasawaytogenerateform. Finally, theideasofwrapping, weaving, and tension structurally evolved into avariationonthespaceframe, whichbecamethebasisfor a portable wilderness hostel. Martin Heidegger’swritingsonphenomenologyservedasabasisforthisreversed design process, where our studio exploredessencethroughtheactofcreation, thenprogrammedandappliedarchitecturalmeaningtotheresultantobjects.
