QUALIFICATION SPECIFICATION LEVEL 2 AWARD IN EMERGENCY FIRST AID AT

WORK

Title - HABC Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work

1. Target Group:

1.1.1 The Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work is a qualification

aimed at candidates already working or preparing to work in industry

that is identified within the Company’s risk assessment of First Aid

1.1.2 Candidates gaining this qualification will know that First Aid is the

responsibility of everyone involved in the working environment. Its

topics are regarded by the Health & Safety Executive as being important to

maintaining good practice in the safe, prompt and effective treatment of

injuries and ill health in the workplace.

1.2 The qualification can be taken as a free standing qualification or as part of a

wider programme of training.

2. Key Skills:

2.1 This qualification provides the opportunity for candidates to develop competence

in key skills and produce evidence towards attaining key skills. The qualification

does not ensure key skills are met as this would depend upon candidates

producing a portfolio of evidence and the mode of study adopted.

3. Recommendation of Prior Learning:

3.1 There are no prerequisites for this qualification. It is advised that candidates

have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy or numeracy or equivalent. Arrangements

are in place for special needs.

4. Age Ranges:

4.1 This qualification is appropriate for use in age ranges: pre-16, 16-18 and 19+

5. Guided Learning Hours:

5.1 Guided learning hours for this qualification are 10 hours depending upon the

mode of study and training needs of candidates.

6. Restrictions on Candidate Entry:

6.1 Candidates must have undertaken a course of instruction approved by HABC and

covering the syllabus prior to taking the examination. In addition, all candidates

must be able to demonstrate their competence of key First Aid practices which is

assessed ongoing by the instructor.

7. Special Needs:

7.1 HABC have measures in place for delegates with special needs. Please see the

Reasonable Adjustments Policy, Annex 17 of the HABC Core Manual.

8. Qualification Structure:

8.1 This is a single unit qualification.

8.2 The qualification is competency-based. The assessment is ongoing throughout

the course and carried out by the Nominated Tutor. Candidates must practically

demonstrate the application of the correct techniques in all the First Aid areas

indicated within the qualification.

9. Examination Results and Certificates:

9.1 Following the assessment, a list of results will be provided stating whether

candidates have passed or failed. Certificates for successful candidates will be

dispatched for distribution by Nominated Tutors.

11. Potential for Progression:

11.1 Progression routes include First Aid at Work which includes learning outcomes for

candidates to be able to administer emergency first aid at work, recognise the

presence of major illness and apply general first aid principles in its management.

12. Required Qualifications and Experience of Nominated Tutors:

12.1 Nominated Tutors must have sufficient expertise to speak with authority on the

subject to be taught at the Levels at which they wish to train.

12.2 HABC require that Nominated Tutors have teaching experience and hold a

qualification in the relevant subject area.

13. Suitable Subject Area Qualifications may include:

13.1 A current and valid First Aid at Work certificate

13.2 Registration with the NMC or GMC

13.3 A registered paramedic with the HPC

14. Suitable Teaching Qualifications include:

14.1 Diploma or Certificate in Education

14.2 Bachelors or Masters Degree in Education

14.3 City and Guilds Teachers Certificate or equivalent

14.4 Level 3 NVQ in Training and/or Development

14.5 Professional Trainers Certificate

14.6 Proof of at least 30 hours of training in any subject

14.7 HABC will also accept proof of attendance on a Nuco 2-day instructor course (or

equivalent) together with relevant work experience and a training qualification or

training experience.

14.8 Nominated Tutors should also be able to demonstrate relevant experience and

knowledge in a work context and provide evidence of engagement with the

subject field and continuing professional development.
