THERMAL-CHEM® WEAR SYSTEM FOR RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, AND INDUSTRIAL FLOORS

The Thermal-Chem system is a two-coat system. The base coat is 745 DecoWear, a two-component, 100% solids, epoxy polymer. This coat is applied with a rubber squeegee and back rolled with a lint-free roller. Screen sanding is recommended before the top coat. The top coat can be the 745 DecoWear epoxy or 1061 ArmorFinish E81, a two-component, 81% solids, high gloss aliphatic urethane; or 1064 DecoFinish E65 M, a two-component, 65% solids, matte aliphatic urethane. The top coat is roller applied with a lint-free roller. For more technical data on Thermal-Chem please contact Maxxon or Thermal-Chem.

When choosing a sealer for concrete slabs and interior self-leveling wear surfaces, such as Level-Right® Maxx, there are many options. Whether the space is for retail, residential or light commercial warehouse use, there is a sealer best suited for the application. Contact Maxxon® Corporation for assistance in selecting the proper sealers or coatings for the appropriate applications.

As each space and application is different, you must consider the location’s end use, building and safety requirements, and finishing

materials prior to choosing the appropriate sealer or coating. No single sealer or coating can be used for all applications and still maintain both efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Be aware that no sealer is immune to scratches caused by metal racks or construction traffic. All sealers and coatings will scratch and require maintenance and reapplication.

Level-Right Maxx can be decoratively colored by use of topical sealer or integral pigment additive. Topical color results from using a colored sealer such as the H&C or one of Thermal-Chem’s colored systems (see Maxxon’s Commercial Topping/Thermal-Chem

brochure). For integral color, see Maxxon Level-Right Maxx Color Chart below.* With either colored system, it is strongly recommended that a mock-up panel be created and written approval by the owner or owner’s representative be obtained before commencing the work.

Other sealers and coatings can be used over Level-Right Maxx. Proper use requires a compatibility test and adherence to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Some coatings require their own brand name primers, while coatings such as epoxies require shot blasting. To ensure proper floor preparation, a bond test should

be performed. The manufacturer or installer of these products is responsible for the compatibility. Let the test area set for a minimum of 72 hours (refer to manufacturer recommendations) before checking bond compatibility or attempting abrasion resistance testing.

OTHER SEALERS

*The colors shown are for reference only. Actual finished colors will vary. Please note that due to slight variations in the raw minerals used in the manufacturing process, the base color of Level-Right Maxx may vary, which in turn will affect the final color of the integrally pigmented Level-Right Maxx. The color/appearance will also change depending on which finishes/sealers are used for the entire system. While Thermal-Chem’s DecoWear Matte finish was used in the samples shown, in the field the same system will vary slightly in color. Poured jobsite samples are strongly recommended to give an accurate overall idea of the finished floor color. Some cracking may occur in the Level-Right Maxx; this is normal and is part of the unique look of this finished floor system.

Polishing

GRINDING/POLISHING LEVEL-RIGHT MAXXFor smoother, glossier floors, consider grinding or polishing Level-Right Maxx. This applies to gray, stained, or integrally colored floors. For a mottled concrete look, use an 80, 100, or 120 mesh screen paper or 3M black pad on a buffing machine or floor maintainer until desired look is achieved. For a more polished and glossy appearance, use dry diamond grinding techniques. Step up from 100, 200, 400, 800 to 1500 grit pads without skipping a step. This process removes just the surface cream and typically does not expose the aggregate. Tack rag, Swiffer mop, or damp mop until clean, then apply the chosen sealer with the T-bar, lamb’s wool or similar applicator. Let cure for 24 hours before allowing light traffic.

• Felt padding should be permanently affixed to the legs of all furniture and appliances before it is moved in.

• Work boots and shoes that have pebbles lodged in the soles should be removed prior to entering.

• It is important to remove grit. Care should be taken to prevent dirt, sand, and grit from accumulating on the surface of the floor; they act like sandpaper and abrade the finish. Walk-off mats should be placed inside and outside at all exterior exits. These mats should be cleaned and/or replaced on a regular basis.

• When moving heavy furniture or appliances, do not slide on the Level-Right Maxx flooring. It is best to pick them up completely to protect the floor.

• Take precautions to avoid standing moisture. Immediately wipe up all spills.

• Pet claws should be properly trimmed at all times.

• Always use proper cleaning products; follow the recommended standard of care for the sealer, coating, etc. Some cleaning products may cause damage to the sealer on your floor.

• As needed, reapply finish floor coating to the floor for protection and rejuvenation of the floor finish. Follow floor coating manufacturer’s standard of care.

• All coatings and sealers WILL scratch. The severity and depth will depend on the abuse that the coatings take. It is very difficult to perfectly match the surrounding floor with any Level-Right Maxx repair.

• Treat your Level-Right Maxx floor as you would any other high end finished floor system.

• Hair line cracks are normal, additional cracks may occur from structural movement and settlement.

LIMITATIONS 1. Do not pour Level-Right Maxx where the floor temperature is less than 50°F (10°C) or greater than 100°F (37.7°C). 2. Protect the poured mortar from wind and sun, and from freezing temperatures for the first 72 hours. 3. The structural subfloor and floor joist must comply with manufacturers’ maximum span criteria. Typically a deflection limitation of L/360 is adequate for Maxxon Underlayments. Some floor coverings such as marble, stone, travertine, and ceramic tile may require a stiffer floor system. Maxxon Underlayments are non-structural and therefore cannot be expected to reinforce structurally deficient subfloors. The general contractor/project superintendent, architect, specifier, or building owner should make necessary allowances for expected live, concentrated, impact, and/or dead loads including the weight of finished floor goods and setting beds. 4. Additional consideration should be taken for concentrated/dynamic loads. U.S. building codes typically specify a uniform live load of 40 pounds per square foot for residential floor designs. This load is intended to account for large loads that can occur in a building. In reality these loads are not uniform, but rather consist of items such as furniture and appliances that actually induce concentrated loads for exceeding 40 lbs per sq ft. Rolling concentrated loads such as office chairs, wheel chairs and motorized scooters add turning, twisting, repetition, and other dynamics which should also be taken into consideration. Determining the appropriate structural design of the floor is not the responsibility of Maxxon nor the Maxxon applicator. 5. During construction, place temporary wood planking over the underlayment wherever it will be subjected to heavy wheeled or concentrated loads. 6. Level-Right Maxx is for interior use only. 7. Level-Right Maxx will not structurally bridge over expansion joints, saw cuts or structural cracks. They

should be allowed to continue through the Level-Right Maxx. The architect or structural engineer must specify expansion joints and show their location in areas that will receive hard surface floor goods, such as ceramic or marble tile and hardwood flooring. 8. Level-Right Maxx may only be used as a wear surface when sealed with a Maxxon approved sealer. 9. For applications other than those over structural concrete call Maxxon Corporation for application procedures. 10. Maxxon Underlayments are “breathable” and not a vapor barrier. The general contractor/project superintendent, architect, specifier, or building owner shall test slabs-on-ground or elevated slabs for MVER (ASTM F1869) or RH (ASTM F2170). If the MVER or RH of the concrete substrate exceeds the floor covering manufacturer’s respective requirements for the finished flooring system, the concrete must be treated with a moisture barrier, such as Maxxon DPM or Maxxon MVP, before installation of Level-Right Maxx.

DISCLAIMER Level-Right Maxx can provide an ideal surface for most decorative finishing techniques and products. However, Maxxon Corporation is not responsible for the outcome of the finished floor. It is the responsibility of the contractor to follow the installation instructions for the various products used during the finishing process. Mock-ups shall be provided by the contractor with all products and finishing techniques used in the project, and signed, written approval shall be obtained before commencing the work. Level-Right Maxx is a portland cement-based product and, therefore, may crack due to structural movement or excessive drying-shrinkage (craze cracks).
