The two books of this course ‘Foundation 1’ and ‘Interactions -2’ cover the four skills of English i.e. Listening, speaking, reading and writing. So, after completion of the course, the students will develop a sound knowledge on these four skills. Moreover, the students will also learn various rules regarding grammar. The course also help the students develop a rich vocabulary or stock of words. The real teaching hours of this

course are twelve .(12 Contact hours)

Course Description:

This is a three hour credit course designed to strengthen reading skills. Emphasis is on basic word attack skills, vocabulary, transitional words, paragraph

organization, basic comprehension skills, and learning strategies. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in the skills

required for Reading II (LANE 216).

1. Improve their speed, flexibility, vocabulary, and comprehension in reading 2. Develop their comprehension skills: topic sentence, main idea, major and minor supporting details of the paragraph, and organizational structures

3. Use different strategies based on the type of reading they are doing (e.g. study reading, critical reading, rapid reading, previewing, skimming and scanning)

4. Build a good vocabulary bank through the use of word parts and context clues

5. Improve their focus, comprehension, memory and speed through mindfully and purposefully reading

6. Increase vocabulary to enhance fluency and understanding

7. Read with both eyes and mind

8. Learn preview skills for defining reading purposes

9. Explain inferences in given selections

10. Identify the theme/topic of reading selections, stated and implied main ideas, and supporting details of a selection

Course Description:

This three hour credit course that focuses on the skills, techniques, and strategies for writing effectively. It assumes a demonstrated mastery of basic English

grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraph structure, and essay structure. The aim of the course is to teach students the steps of clear writing and

thinking with the intention of applying such skills to essays and term papers they will be assigned in their introductory literature and linguistics classes. The

four patterns assigned for this course are: Description (a verbal picture of a person, place or thing); Narration (a story); Example (an idea supported by

examples); Process (a series of steps carried out in a definite order). Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in the skills

required for Writing II (LANE 217).
