LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Howdy neighbors!
Well, summer is almost upon us and our season has already begun. As we welcome the warm summer sun, we look forward to all the splendors that the sunny season brings us. From cookouts to campouts, weddings, parties, holidays, to surf and sand, the summertime is always full of opportunities to relax, unwind, and recharge. With the kids home from school and the long summer days, there will be plenty of moments to share and remember. Even for those of us who don’t have children in the household, we may have grown children who will visit, grandchildren who will visit, or neighbor’s children that we may have to chase off our property every once in a while. Though in the end, it is all in good humor.
This time of year also brings about the changing of the guard – so to speak. It is time to elect a new slate of officers for the Civic League. As is usually the case, we have the four executive officer positions and two at-large board members. The nominees’ names are published in this newsletter. As per our bylaws, the secretary of the SBCL will be the one to cast the one vote to elect these nominees at the annual membership meeting in June.
While it is a sad item that we will not be able to enjoy the community fireworks this year, we still have the annual Sandbridge Independence Day Boat Parade on Mill Pond. The city did at least grant us the permit to have this event. So, while we are celebrating the birth of our nation by munching on burgers, hotdogs, chips and beer (or their healthier alternatives) be sure to stop by a neighbor’s house or just step outside and enjoy the cavalcade of decorated boats regaling in our country’s patriotism.
It’s been a pleasure and honor to be your Civic League president and I look forward to having the opportunity to continue to serve you. I hope that we all have a wonderful summer filled with joy and happiness and love and reward, and free from any malevolence or harm. Be kind to each other and remember to greet each other with a smile and a wave. Take care.
Andrew

Police Officer Chris Bryant from the Marine Patrol said they will be working out of the Back Bay a little more this year.
Lifeguard Captain/Paramedic Barry Kirschner said 90% of their rescues are from rip currents, please watch out for them. Cinco De Derby
How often does Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby fall on the same day? Here's how some Sandbridgers celebrated May 5. (hint: margaritas and "Cinco de Derby” hats!)
A L L - S T A R S U R F E RBlayr Barton is putting Sandbridge on the map, after he won big during the Eastern Surfing As-sociation’s Mid-Atlantic Regionals at Jennette’s Pier in Nag’s Head. Blayr placed first in Open Boys Shortboard. He also won First Place in Boys U14 Shortboard and Second Place in Boys U16 Shortboard. Later this month, the Princess Anne Middle School seventh grader goes to the USA Surfing America Prime Championships in San Clemente, California. Blayr says he is excited to compete with surfers from California, Hawaii and the East Coast.

SANDBRIDGE SPRING COMMUNITY CLEANUP
For the first time, a group (with a police escort) cleaned up a big mound trash on a portion of Sandbridge Road. They then stopped at Banditos where they were provided much-needed refreshment. Later in the day, volunteers spread out across Sandbridge to help keep our community beautiful. Afterwards, everyone was treated to a mouth-watering barbeque at the Baja, compliments of Boardwok restaurant. A big shout-out goes to Kevin Wong and James Barton for once again organizing this biannual event.

10 SANDBRIDGE NEWS, AUGUST 2013
The tight, challenging Hell's Point Golf Course yielded some heavenly results for Team Brady during the 5th Annual Sandbridge Charity Open.
Team Brady—comprised of four excellent golfers: Joe Brady, P.J. Reed, Joey Brown and Mike Truillo—shot a blistering 17-under-par 55 in the four-man captain's choice format to win the tournament by an astounding nine shots.
Team Siebert No. 2, the defending champion but with an almost entirely different team of Kerri Beasley, Darrius Robinson, Cory Belcher and P.J. Fortner, placed second with a 64. Finishing third was Team 4 Locos, comprised of Shaun Devine, Mike Hunt, Greg Campbell and Bart Streit, which shot a combined 65.
Team RBC, which consisted of Ed Boeovatz, Dean Sheppard, Kathryn Sheppard and Suzanne Compitello, won the second flight with a composite score of 69. They won by matching scorecards with Team Built-In Systems (Jeff Simon, Rusty Dietz, Patrick Simon and Ryan Simon), which shot an identical score. Team SCC (Mark Gellasch, Bob McMillin, Tim Patrick and John Roadman) and Team Voss (Steven Voss, John Hassan, Rob Stark and Bill Gibson) tied for third in the first flight, one shot back.
Closest to the pin winners included Amanda Brown (No. 4), Mike Hunt (No. 11) and Skip Shetler (No. 15). Joey Brown won the longest drive competition on No. 14.
Many local companies and organizations contributed heavily to the tournament's success. Siebert Realty served as the platinum or main event sponsor yet again, doing so for the fifth consecutive year. Siebert also once again provided a wildly entertaining sponsorship tent on the course's opening hole.
Pungo Pizza provided lunch for the fifth straight year, and the Sandbridge Island Restaurant again catered dinner. Hall Automotive served as the Hole in One sponsor and had a car available for a hole-in-one car giveaway. Simply Steamed, Built-In Systems, and Beach Chemical also provided donations and services while Hall Auto had a Honda Civic available for a hole-in-one on No. 11. Alex Reed of Whisky Creek Customs was a trophy sponsor.
Summer Lane, owner of Sandbridge Events & Gift Baskets, once again coordinated the tournament and did another outstanding job of pulling together all of the various activities to provide an entertaining and wonderful time for everyone involved with the annual charity tournament.

By the time you get this newsletter in the mail, one of my favorite events in Sandbridge would have taken place. Pictures of the Sandbridge Memorial Day Parade will be in next month’s newsletter, but this month I want to give a shout out to all those who make this neighborhood-friendly event happen.
I have been enjoying this Mayberry-like parade for many years. The Sandbridge Shores neighborhood and its residents are some of the friendliest, most cohesive, and most fun people I know.
Judy Donahue and Donna Russell are the driving forces behind the Memorial Day Parade from start to finish. Their husbands, Richard and Paul, kick in and take care of the food and the hot dog cookout at the finish line on Wood Duck. Other Wood Duck and Bluebill neighbors, including Chris and Erin Forbes this year, contribute to the festivities with an adult beverage stand serving tasty Mimosas , Bloody Mary’s and Jello shots. And don’t forget the canine refreshments! The customary canine rest stop in front of Cindy and Bill Graf’s house on the corner of Tuna and Wood Duck will carry on with new neighbors Kim and Nick Naylor.
Meyon and Chris Burns take care of the parade’s starting lineup on Bluebill. Katie Duford and her family, who are new to Sandbridge Shores, are also pitching in and help set up and serve food. Jonnie Mellen and her girl scouts do their part, collecting used American flags for proper disposal.
Fred Greene, Sandbridge’s ultimate volunteer, is instrumental in getting permits for all this. Fred and his neighbors on Teal Crescent, Mike Maloney, Sean Back and Ken Leach, are also the ones at the helm of Bingo which starts later this month. Bingo is another summer tradition that makes Sandbridge so special. This group of Teal Crescenters puts in a lot of work to make every Wednesday a fun-filled event and raise a lot of money for the Fire and Rescue Squad besides.
With that, I wish you all a fun and safe summer. And this reminder from our medical and safety experts: please remember to wear your bike, skateboarding, motorcycle and other sports helmets. We have them for a reason.
