Define the term “sociology”


Science of society, social institutions, and social relationships, and specifically the systematic study of the development, structure, interaction, and collective behaviour of organized human groups. It emerged at the end of the 19th century through the work of Émile Durkheim in France, Max Weber and Georg Simmel in

Germany, and Robert E. Park and Albion Small in the U.S. Sociologists use observational techniques, surveys and interviews, statistical analysis, controlled experiments, and other methods to study subjects such as the family, ethnic relations, schooling, social status and class, bureaucracy, religious movements, deviance, the elderly, and social change.

Sociologists for the most part ignore God and what God’s Word says about man. Therefore, they often come to wrong conclusions because of the humanistic assumptions with which they begin. However, their misinterpretation of the data which they gather about human behavior does not invalidate the data itself. Four Basic Social Needs …


Briefly describe the four basic social needs and the impact such knowledge has for the dedicated Christian teacher.



1) Security• the need to be accepted by others in the group

• unmet or unrealized oft translates into insecurity and confusion

• Time and time again, people show they are not only willing but ready and eager to learn when they feel safe in the learning environment / group.



2) Response• goes beyond belonging … to making and keeping

close friendships with even just a few in the group.

• fulfilling this social need usually results in a well-adjusted person / learner



3) Recognition• need for commendation re: accomplishments and

faithful use of one’s gifts and talents

• “There are two things people want more than sex or money … recognition and praise.” Mary Kay Ash

• “Most people rate “having a caring and encouraging boss” even higher than they value money or fringe benefits.” The Leadership Challenge p. 317



4) New Experience• The human being who is constantly learning or

doing something new will tend to be inquisitive, “turned on”, and eager to move ahead.
