Race and the Law

•Central government and local authorities have a range of policies in place to try and reduce discrimination. These are:

• Race Relations Acts 1965 and 1976 – These laws make it illegal to discriminate on grounds of colour, race or ethnic/national origin in public places. The 1976 Act also set up the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) which in 2006 merged with the other equality bodies to form The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

• Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and 2003 – Public organisations must be pro-active in promoting racial equality. The 2003 Act requires all employers to take reasonable steps to prevent discrimination.

Race and the Law•Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 – In England and Wales it is an offence to intentionally stir up racial hatred. The bill will allow companies to discriminate in favour (i.e. ‘positive discrimination’) of female and ethnic minority candidates of equal ability, though companies would not be forced to use positive discrimination.

•Show Racism The Red Card is an anti-racism educational charity. They aim to combat racism through enabling role models, who are predominately but not exclusively footballers, to present an anti-racist message to young people and others. •Show Racism The Red Card acknowledges that racism changes, as do the experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic communities in the UK. •Their message and activities therefore need to be able to respond to such changes as and when appropriate. They achieve this through:•Producing educational resources.•Developing activities to encourage people, including young people, to challenge racism.

•The Scottish Government is committed to promoting equality of opportunity and social justice for all those who live in Scotland.
