DIRECTIONS1. Inform students that paper sculpture is a true art

form and that they will be using basic techniques of it to create a three dimensional flower. Paper sculpture dates back to China as early as 105AD. With the invention of paper made from parts of fish netting, bark, rag and hemp, people have turned a two-dimensional product (paper) into the three-dimensional art form of paper sculpture. Show students examples of paper sculpture such as the work of 17th century, English artist Augustine Walker whose work is still displayed in the Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England, or the work of Dutch artist A. Van Omeringh.

2. Using 140lb Sax Watercolor Paper, demonstrate basic paper sculpture techniques: curling, scoring, folding, tearing, bending and the creation of complex curves to cause shadows within the sculpture. Have students try the same. Give students the definition of “deckle edge”: a rough untrimmed edge left on the paper by a deckle or produced artificially. Inform students that they will be tearing flower petal shapes to leave a deckled edge. This gives special interest to their flower.

3. Inform students they will be painting and designing both sides of watercolor paper with liquid watercolors in regular, metallic and fluorescent colors to use for the flower parts. The sheets will also be varnished with Sax Tempera Varnish so that students can bend and shape the paper better. Show the art of collage artist Eric Carle and abstract painter Jackson Pollock that illustrate surface designed papers.

4. Show photos of flowers that follow a circular design such as zinnias, mums, daisies and sunflowers. Have students realize that the study of plants and flowers is part of the study of natural science. They will need to use math skills to cut a 7" circle from watercolor paper and draw three or four concentric circles on it. This will be both the base of the flower and the guide from which to position the flower petals.

5. Students will pick a color palette and paint both sides of their watercolor papers using such techniques as bold brush stokes, sponging, dotting, stippling and overlaying of color. When papers are dry on both sides, varnish just one side of them.

6. Students will tear petal and leaf shapes from the papers and use paper sculpture techniques to form them and give them depth. A deckled edge will be formed as they tear the paper and that those deckled edges will be painted separately before the petal shapes are glued around the concentric circle base of the flower.

7. Varnished, doubled sheets of colored paper can be cut and curled into accents to place within their flower forms.

8. Use Sax Paper Clay to form the center of the flower, which will also be painted and varnished.

9. A Sax 12" Canvas board will be the base for the completed flower and can be painted with Sax Acrylics as a background for the flowers.

10. Use Tacky Glue to attach the flower and leaves to the 12" Square Canvas Backboard. Enjoy, discuss and display the paper sculpture flowers.

OBJECTIVES• Learn and use a basic marbling technique with an

alternate medium.

• Use finished marbled papers to design an assembled piece.

• Practice paper folding and manipulation to create a peacock image.

DESCRIPTIONThe watercolor papers used to create the peacock in this lesson plan are marbled using Roylco Foam Paint Bottles. This is a simple nontoxic method of marbling that produces beautiful results for any age level.

DIRECTIONS1. Begin by preparing your materials. The Foam Paint

Bottles come with a recommended recipe for paint solution. Use this recipe along with Sax liquid watercolor paints. Once the recipe is prepared, fill the bottles the remaining distance with water. After experimentation you may wish to increase or decrease the amount of paint used in the recipe to adjust your colors to the desired intensity.

2. A smooth piece of glass or plastic can be used for this process. Choose your color combinations and pump foam onto the surface area of the glass or plastic starting with several pumps of the main color to create a base approximately the size of the paper.

3. To create a marbled pattern select two accent colors. Place a pump of color number two every few inches within your base shape (as if you were placing cookies on a tray to bake). Then, add a smaller pump of a third color either below, next to, or in the center of that colored circle.

4. Take the tip of a brush handle and draw a pattern through the foam. First, draw several evenly spaced lines vertically through the foam and then draw lines horizontally. This will marbleize your foam on the glass. Do not over mix because eventually foam will get “muddy” just like real paint does. (If a formal marbled pattern is not required or children are younger, instead allow them to make swirls in the paint with a brush handle).

5. Lay a piece of Sax Halifax watercolor paper onto the foam starting at one end and gently lay it toward the other. You will see the water coming through the back of the sheet. If you see a small bubble just give it a second or tap on it gently with your finger.

6. As soon as your sheet is completely wet lift it back off, set it aside and gently remove the foam using a squeegee like a flat edge. A large disposable foam brush works excellent for this. It removes the foam but won’t tear the delicate paper.

7. Allow the papers to dry overnight. The paper specified in the lesson dries flat and does not need to be pressed.

8. This peacock was created freehand on drawing paper, cut out and traced onto the marbled paper. When cutting out the peacock, reserve the negative piece of drawing paper and use this as the stencil. This will allow you to specifically select what section of the marbled paper you will use.

9. Use an accordion fold to create and layer the feathers.

10.All of the papers were mounted on a black foam board using a double-sided adhesive tape.

OBJECTIVES• Students will incorporate repetitive geometric

shapes, patterns or symbols, drawn freehand or with the use of templates, to create a radial, embellished design on a circular black canvas with pens.

DESCRIPTIONRadial designs have been used in numerous cultures over time, as exhibited in European architecture, Mexican paper cutting, colonial quilts and Middle Ages jewelry, to name a few. But the Mandala from India, in this generation, has become a generic term for the art form. Here, with some inspiration from Zentagle, a Fredrix Cut Edge Circular Canvas Panel and pens are used to add a textural element, reminiscent of beading or possibly needlepoint, to this ancient art.

7School Specialty participates in numerous purchasing cooperatives and contracts. Contact your Account Manager for pricing.

DIRECTIONS1. Trace the circular Fredrix Canvas Panel, onto copy

paper or something comparable. Cut out carefully because this will be used as a template. (If you prefer, you may use a compass to draw comparable guidelines directly onto the canvas.)

2. Fold the paper circle in half. Open and fold in half again creating a criss-cross. Fold two more times making eight “slices of a pie”, with all folds facing upward.

3. Gently flatten the folds and place the paper circle on the canvas. With a sharp pencil, carefully punch a tiny hole, where all the folds meet, making a mark on the canvas to indicate the center.

4. While holding the paper circle in place, make a mark at the ends of each fold, along the circumference of the canvas.

5. Remove the paper circle. Using a ruler, draw four lines from the circumference marks through the center of the canvas, so it looks like pie slices.

6. Make marks on each line, one inch apart. These pencil guidelines will look silvery on the canvas, but will be easily covered by the Gelly Roll Pens.

7. Using a pencil first and starting in the center, draw a single shape over the center or draw a symbol, shape or pattern that can be repeated four or eight times around the canvas. It can be drawn freehand or with a drawing/all purpose template. If you make a mistake, gently use a vinyl eraser to remove the pencil.

8. Cover the pencil lines with the Gelly Roll Pens and embellish as desired.

9. Continue drawing one set at a time, of four or eight shapes, symbols, patterns, etc. in pencil, then covering and embellishing with the pens.

10.Use the pencil guidelines as needed to keep the design symmetrical. Also, the canvas is textured, so you may have to apply a bit more pressure using the Gelly Roll Pens than if drawn on paper.

11.Continue drawing set after set, using pencil, then pen, until the desired amount of the canvas is covered.

Younger Student Variation

1. Step #1 is the same. You may wish to use tracing paper instead to make cutting easier and a bit more accurate.

2. Fold the paper as you would for an eight-sided snowflake and cut out small shapes along the folds. Snip off a tiny center.

3. Unfold, flatten and trace onto the canvas to making guideline shapes and your center shape. Generally follow steps 7-11, as able, but use Liquid Metal Metallic Markers and apply gentle pressure wherever pens (Gelly Roll Pens) are indicated.

OBJECTIVES• Observe and identify what a city skyline is.

• Identify and name basic building shapes and forms.

• Create a slab clay relief tile depicting a real or imaginary city skyline or silhouette.

• Use various tools to texture the city buildings and add detail.

DESCRIPTIONWe learn early in our art education that the horizon line is an imaginary line where the sky meets the ground. A skyline is the imaginary line in a city where the sky meets the building tops. We can see this division of space even more dramatically when the sky is light and buildings darken such as at sunset or sunrise. This is called a silhouette.

DIRECTIONS

1. Fold a 9"x 12" piece of paper in half. On this 6"x 9" sheet, draw a city skyline, real or imaginary. Make the buildings of many geometric shapes and sizes.

2. Roll out two pounds of clay into a 1⁄4" slab. Place drawing on the slab and trim around the edge making a 6"x 9" rectangle.

3. Place the drawing back on the slab and, using a ball point pen, draw gently but firmly enough to transfer lines onto the clay slab.

4. Cut out the city buildings on the skyline only. Keep the buildings moist and soft.

5. Roll out another ball of clay from your wedged trimmings and make another 6"x 9" rectangle. Roll to 1⁄8"-1⁄4" thickness.

6. Place city clay shape onto new background rectangle. Gently draw over again, but only the skyline. Score and slip the back of the city and the front of the new rectangle below your drawn skyline and press together. Be sure to gently press out any air bubbles. You now have a raised city of buildings on top of a flat background tile with the sky showing.

7. Using various tools, draw and press into city buildings architectural details: Windows, edges, shapes etc.

8. Draw details into sky if you wish: Clouds, birds, airplanes, stars etc.

9. Allow tile to slowly dry between newspaper and sheetrock layers. Fire only when dry to cone 04, (1949 degrees F.)

10. Glaze city and sky with Mayco Stroke and Coat glaze.

11. Details and linear items may be accented with Mayco Designer Liner.

12. Clean any glaze off relief tile back and fire to cone 05, (1888 degrees F.)

DIRECTIONS1. Inform students they will be researching rainforests

to depict one particular plant, animal, insect or bird in a mixed media composition done on tiered layers of black mounting boards. Give a brief description of rainforests: an area where plants are self-watering because they release water into the atmosphere through a process of transpiration. Each tree canopy can release two hundred gallons of water into the air each year. The moisture creates a thick cloud cover that hangs over the atmosphere and keeps rainforests humid and warm. This creates an excellent habitat for plants and wildlife.

2. Show photos and paintings of rainforests, such as the work of Frederic Edwin Church entitled “Tropical Scenery”, painted in 1873, or his “El Rio de Luz” painted in 1877. Church was a prominent member of the Hudson River School of artists who painted in Central and South America to depict the mountains, waterfalls and sunsets of the rainforests.

Give students a list of possible rainforests to research, e.g., Tasmanian Rainforest in Australia, and the rainforests of Costa Rica, Hawaii, Thailand, the Amazon and Brazil. Show photos of rainforest creatures and plants, e.g., the scarlet macaw of Brazil, the red-eyed tree frog of Columbia, Mexico and Central America, the colorful lizards of El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico, and cassowary birds of Australian rainforests.

Note: this lesson’s subject is the two-inch red-eyed tree frog of Columbia, Central America and Mexico. It was chosen for its vivid colors and its ability to use camouflage to hide on leaves and then startle its predators when threatened with its big red eyes, bright orange webbed feet and colorful under belly.

3. Introduce, demonstrate and have students test the mixed media method with the supplies for their compositions.

4. Cut white drawing paper to 11" x 14" and instruct students to work out a composition highlighting their choice of subject matter. Show students they will be stacking three to four sizes of black mounting board, one on top of the other, to give an unusual perspective to their work. This helps highlight the main subject of the art work. Levels will be propped up with small stacks of mat board on the underside of the boards and, lastly, glued to one another. The overall size of their tiered work will be 11" x 14".

5. In this order, have students a) choose the number and size of mounting boards and position them in place with tape on the undersides, b) trace the shapes of the boards onto an 11" x 14" base, c) sketch very lightly the drawing on the boards or use transfer tape to transfer the drawings (use the textured side of the board when using as a drawing surface; the smooth side, when using as a mounting board), d) after the drawings are completed, remove the tape from the boards and start the mixed media process on each board, following the design. Place and glue stacks of mounting board on the underside of each board and glue in a tiered fashion, and e) display and evaluate work of self and others, and enjoy the completed rainforests mixed media compositions.

OBJECTIVES• Establish a design for a traditional fairy tale.

• Use a traditional material in a non-traditional way.

• Create depth in artwork though drawing and media application.

DESCRIPTIONThe purpose of this lesson is to enable students to use Crayola Modeling Clay in a non-traditional method, as a “paint” on the surface, and to give dimension to their finished piece. Students will take a traditional fairy tale and select three elements of it to feature in their piece. The lesson combines the use of modeling clay and traditional watercolors.

DIRECTIONS1. Students will begin by examining and brainstorming

a list of various fairy tales from childhood that take place in a forest.

2. Students will develop sketches for the teacher’s approval based on this idea. Students should incorporate three elements of the story into their artwork. For example, the piece featured in this lesson is using the woods, the red coat and the wolf. On the practice sketch indicate which colors of Crayola Modeling Clay would be used on what areas, and which areas would use Crayola Watercolors. Keep in mind, the use of the Crayola Modeling Clay also helps to create the feeling of depth in the work. The modeling clay mixes well so it can be used to create additional colors.

3. Gently sketch out the drawing onto the illustration board.

4. Begin by applying the Crayola Modeling Clay onto all the desired areas. Press firmly onto the board and it will adhere, push it down and rub it on to attach it initially, and build it up from there.

5. When most of the Crayola Modeling Clay is applied, begin to watercolor the background or any other imagery. If more clay is desired, wait until the background dries before applying.

6. When the piece is finished, and all watercolor areas are dry, gently apply a coat of Sax Multi-media Varnish over the entire piece. This will give it stability and add natural highlights to the work.

DIRECTIONS1. Discuss and illustrate the principles and elements

of design.

2. Have students recognize the principles and elements of design in famous art work, in their own work and in that of others.

3. Inform students that they will use Sharpie® Oil Based Paint Markers on a number of mini canvas boards to create a grouping of patterns that have one specific theme in a design assemblage. Each assemblage will use as many of the principles and elements of design to carry their theme throughout the assemblage.

4. Explain the definitions of the words “assemblage” and “patterned”.

5. Inform students they will assemble each designed geometric shaped canvas on a different level to the back board so that the grouping has an elevated, floating look to the design. Students will have five to seven pieces of the geometric mini canvas board to design.

6. Discuss patterns found in nature such as those occurring in waves reaching the sand on the beach, patterns in bark, animal fur, leaves and flowers, and those found in textiles and weavings from different cultures.

7. Show and let students try Sharpie Oil Based Paint Markers and point out that they are brilliant and varied in color, opacity, permanent, quick-drying and will work well on black or white canvas.

8. Stress the use of good, clean line, repetition of shape and color, varying of size of pattern from shape to shape, so that the assemblage moves the eye from shape to shape.

9. Inform students the theme of the patterned shapes should be the overall impression that the viewer has when first glancing at the project as a whole, for example, the theme of “Tree Shapes”, in this lesson.

10. To elevate each mini canvas, students will use scraps of mat board built up in layers like a stack of bricks. Have students try different levels of these stacks under their designed mini canvas pieces to see how the levels work for the design as a whole before gluing the stacks together and before gluing each canvas piece to the mounting board.

11. The Faber-Castell® Soft Pastels may be used to create a mist of color on the black mounting board behind the elevated mini shapes. This would lend more of the elements of value and movement as well as the principles of repetition, harmony and contrast to the work.

12. Have students assemble their individual shapes over the mounting board and glue in place.

13. Lastly, have students evaluate their own art work as well as those of others to see how the elements and principles of design are present in the projects. Display and enjoy all of the Patterned Geometric Shape Assemblages.

OBJECTIVES• Students will create a clay tile with the impression

of a decorated pot as its subject.

• Students will plan and carve a linoleum printing block to press into their soft clay tile.

• Students will border their tile with simple clay shapes and textures.

• The printmaking aspect will allow students to create multiple tiles with various glaze colors, thus joining ceramics with printmaking.

DESCRIPTIONThe Arts and Crafts movement began in England and became popular in America in the early 1900s. An artistic reaction to the uniformity of the industrial revolution and mass production of items, artists sought to make work with a hand-crafted look.

Artwork in jewelry, furniture, stained glass, printmaking and especially ceramics reflected the Arts and Crafts movement’s desire for simple, clean and modern lines, and was often influenced by nature, notably Frank Lloyd Wright’s Chicago architecture.

DIRECTIONS1. Decide on a simple 3-D pot form and translate it

into a 2-D shape. Draw it on paper to fit Speedball® mounted linoleum block or Speedy-Cut Easy™ block. Recommended size is 4" x 5".

2. Transfer pot sketch to carving material with carbon paper and a ball point pen.

3. Speedball Linozip safety cutters have a unique “safe” design created for the pull-type carving method. Be sure to use a table hook and keep hands away from cutting blades. Using Speedball handle and Linozip safety cutters, carve pot design into carving material/block. Slowly pull the cutting blade towards you to carve your design.

4. When carving block is finished, roll out 1 1⁄2 lbs. of white or terra cotta clay with roller and guide sticks to about a 5⁄16" rectangular slab.

5. Make a tagboard template and cut clay slab into a tile BIGGER than your carving block to allow you to create a decorative border.

Tip: Don’t forget a hole if you plan to hang your tile.

6. Allow trimmed, bordered slab of clay to dry a bit and place face up on canvas. Center carving down on clay slab and roll over the back of the block firmly with rolling pin to transfer carved pot design onto clay tile. A few whacks with a rubber mallet may be needed.

Tip: If plate sticks to clay, dust printing plate lightly with baby powder, or allow tile to dry a bit more.

7. Dry tiles slowly between layers of newspaper.

8. Bisque fire dry tiles to cone 04 (1949 degrees F.)

9. Glaze and refire to recommended glaze temperature.

DIRECTIONS1. Students will begin by researching the works of Frank

Lloyd Wright.

2. Select a design image that can be illustrated into an evening setting. Sketch a rough draft onto regular drawing paper the same size as the Crescent Ultra-Black Board. Think about what light sources would be coming from the interior and exterior of the structure.

3. Before proceeding to the Crescent Ultra-Black board, have students experiment on a scrap board or black piece of paper using the Faber-Castell Beeswax Crayons and the Faber-Castell Connector Paint set using a variety of brushes. Note that several coats of the paint may be applied to intensify or vary the color. Make a swatch sample board on black of all of your color choices. This is very helpful in determining which colors will work best in which areas.

4. Moving onto the Crescent Ultra-Black board, use the Faber-Castell Beeswax Crayons to lightly sketch your architectural design of choice onto the board.

5. The Faber-Castell Connector Paints and the Faber-Castell Beeswax Crayons can and should be used simultaneously. Layering is greatly encouraged to achieve the desired results. Students will also find the black Faber-Castell Beeswax Crayon to be a very useful tool as it can be used as an “eraser” or to tighten up edges.

DIRECTIONS1. After researching the artistic style and technique of

“grid work” images, take a selfie, choosing an image that can be best used to align to this artistic idea: One that features a unique look, a bright smile or the way glasses are worn, etc.

2. Once a selfie has been chosen, make an enlargement of it, and draw a grid pattern onto it.

3. Using a grid pattern of enlargement with transfer paper, position the enlargement and trace onto the canvas.

4. Select a color pallet that you feel comfortable with and one that has a wide range of intensities and values that you have used before.

5. Start to paint in the grid squares, keeping the “family of colors” consistent. Use Liquitex® Gloss Medium and Varnish to thin Heavy Body paints.

Note: Don’t stray with colors all over the color wheel.

OBJECTIVES• Become acquainted with various classical Greek

pottery forms and their names.

• Translate 3-D pottery forms into 2-D shapes

• Impress natural forms into rolled out vase shapes.

• Join the pot shapes to a textured slab tube in order to create a functional bud vase with a pot “facade” or false front.

DESCRIPTIONThe invention of the pottery wheel enabled early potters in many countries to easily create functional and ceremonial pottery.

Greek potters molded pots of various sizes and shapes to hold and transport water, wine and olive oil. Potters often joined with painters who decorated their pots first with geometric bands, and later with red and black slip figures.

DIRECTIONS1. Draw several Greek pottery shapes:

A. An OLPE is a Corinthian flask or pitcher used for oil or other liquids.

B. An AMPHORA is a jar for carrying water or wine (phorein=to carry).

C. A LEKYTHOS is a cylindrical (olive) oil bottle

. Choose one and create a template on tag board or other heavy paper. The easiest way is to fold the paper like you are cutting a valentine and draw half the pot on the template. Cut it out. The size of your cut-out shape will be the size of your front pot facade (5-8" tall).

2. Roll out a clay slab to 1⁄4" thickness with 1 lb. of clay (apple-sized ball). Set the template on the slab and cut out your pot-shaped slab with pin tool or fettling knife.

3. Allow slab to firm up a bit and roll out another 1⁄4" slab bigger than 5" x 6". Using an Amaco (red) texture roller, roll a texture onto the slab and cut into a 5" x 6" rectangle. This is your tubular cylinder for bud vase.

4. Using a plastic, 4" x 1 3⁄4" diameter piece of PVC pipe (or other tube), cover with newspaper so the clay rectangle will not stick to the pipe.

5. Roll the rectangular-textured slab around the tube, score and slip the seam and then smooth the join.

6. Place a bottom on the tube and score and slip it. Make sure it will not leak.

7. Find small flowers, weeds, herbs or grasses and roll them onto the first pot-shaped rectangle of clay with roller. Do not choose plant material that is too thick as it will go all the way through the slab when rolled.

8. Score and slip a narrow vertical portion of the cylindrical tube as well as the center back of the pot facade slab. Press together to form your facade bud vase.

9. Dry, bisque fire at cone 04 (1949 degrees F.)

10. Glaze with AMACO® Teachers Palette glazes. They are bright, opaque and mixable.

OBJECTIVES• Students will learn and experience the process

of design and construction in layering a paper product, Corobuff®, into a designer necklace that can be worn or displayed as a framed decorative “show piece”.

DESCRIPTIONThe transformation of paper into jewelry goes back hundreds of years. Paper as an invention dates to antiquity, perhaps as far back as A.D. 105 in China.

A flat piece of paper in the hands of a creative person is endless. Making paper jewelry as a specific learner in education can serve as body decoration, an ornament to express individualism, but also as a mark of creative craftsmanship.

OBJECTIVES• Research Renaissance artwork and framing styles.

• Create and frame composition in the historic style.

• Use patterning in frame design.

This lesson focuses on three properties of Renaissance artwork: The use and possible symbolism of dogs, the color palette used at that time and the ornate wood, sometimes gilded, frames that surrounded their work.

DIRECTIONS1. Students will begin by examining and researching the

symbolism and use of dogs in Renaissance artwork.

2. They will then create their own “dog portrait” in the style of these artists selecting a similar breed of dog and color choices that may have been used at that time.

3. After a rough draft is completed, students may continue onto their final board using Lyra® Polycrayons Soft Pastels Sticks. They are easily blended and manipulated. The 24-color set provides an appropriate color range for this type of work.

4. When the portrait portion of the lesson is complete, the piece may be sprayed with a fixative.

5. Students can then research the history of framing styles of the Renaissance, including what woods were used and what styles were made. The example in this lesson used the brown and gold colors of DAS Color Air-Dry Clay but alternative colors may be used.

6. The frame was created by rolling coils of the DAS Color Air-Dry Clay and pressing them flat with a repeating pattern into the coils. Keep in mind when designing and measuring the frame that the DAS Color Air-Dry Clay will shrink slightly during the drying process.

7. Allow the clay to dry overnight.
