Lesson Plan 1 – Unit One, Drawing 

Lesson Title 

Gesture drawing and learning to keep a sketchbook.

  Lesson Objectives 

Students will be able to identify, describe, and complete gesture drawings. Students will also be capable of compiling a sketchbook and recognizing its importance. 

 

  Entry/Introduction 

This lesson is designed to create an enjoyable and engaging class in order to introduce the drawing unit. The students will participate in a short drawing exercise which will create a comfortable and safe learning environment for all students, including those who do not feel artistically inclined.  

The drawing lesson will be followed by an explanation of the first assignment for the term, keeping a sketchbook. Each student’s sketchbook will become an ongoing project for the remainder of the year.  

  

Presentation/Body of Lesson  

The lesson will begin with a brief introduction of the topics we will cover; gesture drawing, sketching, and the purpose of a sketchbook. This will be followed by definitions, examples, a drawing exercise, and a discussion about the sketchbook assignment. 

Using a digital projector to illustrate and define gesture drawing, I will ask for a volunteer to model for the class.  We will start with short drawings, approximately one minute in length, and gradually increase to three minutes each. I will occasionally ask for new volunteers to model, so that each student has the chance to draw. 

Emphasis will be placed on capturing the pose, and the musculature of the body, following lines, and observation. During the exercise I will circle the classroom, in order to provide comments and suggestions, while keeping students on task.  

Once the drawings have been completed, the class will have a discussion about them, such as which drawings are most successful and why. I will then explain the details of the sketchbook project and my expectations. 

  Closure 

The lesson will end with the sketchbook explanation, and any questions the students may have. They will be expected to complete at least 2 – 3 drawings per week, and the sketchbook may also be used to record anything they feel is appropriate. If the class would rather, they may work with a theme throughout their books. 

 

Assessment and Evaluation 

  Before the class leaves I will collect their gesture drawings, which will become a part of their final portfolio in the last unit for the year. The sketchbooks will be handed in on a biweekly basis to be graded. 

 

Extension Activities 

Should the lesson finish early I will either explain the lesson for the next class, or assign more gesture drawings between pairs of students.

The resources include a data projector, examples of gesture drawing, the drawing supplies students will require, and the handouts containing both the materials needed for the course, and the sketchbook assignment.
