Lesson 17. Anger Management

Who and what makes you angry?

Reading Exercise 7

In the heat of the moment, it's easy to say somethingyou'll later regret. Take a few moments to collectyour thoughts before saying anything — and allowothers involved in the situation to do the same.

As soon as you're thinking clearly, express yourfrustration in an assertive but nonconfrontationalway. State your concerns and needs clearly anddirectly, without hurting others or trying to controlthem.

Physical activity can help reduce stress that can causeyou to become angry. If you feel your angerescalating, go for a brisk walk or run, or spend sometime doing other enjoyable physical activities.

Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Use humor tohelp you face what's making you angry and, possibly, any unrealistic expectations you have for how thingsshould go. Avoid sarcasm, though — it can hurtfeelings and make things worse.

To avoid criticizing or placing blame — which mightonly increase tension — use "I" statements todescribe the problem. Be respectful and specific. Forexample, say, "I'm upset that you left the tablewithout offering to help with the dishes" instead of"You never do any housework."

Learning to control anger is a challenge for everyoneat times. Seek help for anger issues if your angerseems out of control, causes you to do things youregret or hurts those around you.

Grammar Chunk 10

Grammar – wish We often use wish a lot to talk about actions in the present that make us angry and that we would like to change.

Examples: ⮚ I really wish people wouldn't drop their litter in the street. ⮚ John wishes his girlfriend would just break up with him.⮚ She wishes her kids would learn some manners.

Form: wish + would (not) + infinitive:

⮚ I wish my teacher wouldn’t give us so much homework.

⮚ I wish my classmates would speak English more often in the lessons.

You can’t use wish + would to talk about yourself. You can only use it to talk about other people’s actions.
