Dear Fellow Home Educating Family,

It is great pleasure that I present Lesson 16 for our kids. I’m so excited to start this lesson for many reasons.

One of which is I feel like the plans are improving constantly. I thank each of you for your encouragement and feedback on how to improve. Hopefully, you will be able to notice the improvements and be just as pleased with them as I am.

I wanted to talk to you about the objectives for each day and remind parents, these “objectives” are meant to be spoken about and reviewed throughout the week. For many children, they need constant repetition for things and those are just a focus for us to work on with them. I pray these activities will make your learning come alive and set in place strong “pegs” for years to come.

This week we are doing two things different in the plans. First, I’m incorporating glyphs. In many schools, glyphs are a “fun” way to gather student data. Often after making glyphs, I would follow it up with a mini graphing lesson. Since I view this blog as our learning community, I thought it might be fun to make glyphs and share the data. If you decide to do the activity, please make sure there are no names or written words on the glyph. Once you send it in, I will have a page dedicated to just these and look forward to seeing what we can learn from each other. It is essentially going to be an online bulletin board. So have fun, but remember, to send them in if you wish to participate.

Second, I’m going to ask that you join me in making a difference in Africa this week. For years, the condition of drinking water in developing countries has been on my heart. I have prayed as to how to handle my burden and today felt like I had a clear answer. I’d love for us to join forces and make a differences for the children and families that drink contaminated water. Just the thought makes my stomach turn. But knowing that we can make turn this week into a week of awareness is my desire. I know many home schooling families are on a tight budget, and I would never want to stress anyone out financially. My hope is not that you give more, but that your children think of ways to organize and raise money for something worth doing.

Would you join efforts with me in organizing a small fundraiser through your communities? If you have a large family, could one of your older children head it up? It doesn’t have to be big, it can be a simple lemonade stand after classes or bake sale at church.

My prayer in doing this is to teach my children that great things can be started with a small plan. I want them to not only know about the geography, but to think about how we can change the world in Jesus’ name. I know my family may be incapable of raising millions, but we can raise a few dollars that will help children like them.

If this is something you think you would like to do, thank you. If it’s not a good time to do it in your life, that’s ok. I pray you would follow God’s calling and know we are blessed to have you on this journey with us.

Blessings, Crecia

1.  This is a great video on volcanoes and how they are formed. Discussion questions are provided.http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/environment/environment-natural-disasters/volcanoes/volcanoes-101/

2.  This is a great interactive website for kids to search on showing the relation between volcanoes and other activities in the earth. http://www.weatherwizkids.com/weather-volcano.htm

3.  This is a unique link showing an underwater eruption. http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/environment/environment-natural-disasters/volcanoes/west-mata-submarine-volcano-vin/

4.  A great site for why they form. It shows the plates moving and provides a good summary. http://kids.discovery.com/games/build-play/volcano-explorer

5.  This is a video of one of the largest active volcanoes today.http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/environment/environment-natural-disasters/volcanoes/beyond-the-lava/

6.  This is the site that shows you how to make a volcano step by step. http://www.sciencebob.com/experiments/volcano.php

History (Day 2)

1.  This is my favorite video by far! Clearly explains everything about all three civilizations and it comes with a script and quiz.http://education-portal.com/academy/lesson/mesoamerican-civilizations-the-olmecs-to-cortes.html

2.  This is a 50 minute movie talking about the Mayan’s glyphs. I suggest watching it before teaching. It talks about sacrifice and Spanish conquest. So I would not recommend it for children <8 years old. I would also recommend it to be seen with a parent in the room. I have not watched the entire movie, but what I do see is fascinating! It’s a well done PBS documentary. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ancient/cracking-maya-code.html

3.  This is a great interactive website for kids to translate our letters into the Mayan glyphs. They can type in their names or sentences and it translates into glyphs. Although he is not a linguist, it’s just fun to see the glyphs. http://www.event12.com/mayan_glyphs/index.html#transform

History (Day 2) Cont.

4.  A short clip with a historian explaining the “Mesoamerican Ballgame” and the myth of the sacrifice. It talks about the “Underworld” and their ancient Mayan beliefs It answers questions about human sacrifice and the purpose behind the game. There are no bloody pictures, but they do show cave drawings. I’d recommend it for kids 8 years and older, with a parent who has previewed present while viewing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYOJkRWifAo

5.  This is a video of the reenactment of the Ancient Mayan ballgame. No words, just music. (1.5 min.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCzhtTjzWvU

Geography/ Math (Day 3) So for quite some time, I’ve thought about how I could help the people of Africa as we spend so much time studying about them and their ancestry. I first came across these links a while back in Lesson 13, now as we learn more about Southern Africa in the coming weeks, I’d love to do something more. The clip is heart wrenching as I hear about children’s needs and a mother’s story of loss.

1.  A short video (about 6 min) explaining the struggles and needs of the African people near Lake Victoria. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV343saR778

2.  Here is a link to how Compassion International is helping families in Africa.http://water.compassion.com/ Compassion has had a long history of making sound decisions with money. They are rated among the highest in non profit organizations and above all are a Christian organization that cares about spreading the good news of Jesus.

3.  Here’s another great organization that helps Africa with their water.http://thewaterproject.org/start-a-fundraiser.php I don’t know much about them, but found them upon searching the web.

Now if your kids want to help, here are some ways… o Set up a lemonade stand at your church/ neighborhood. o Raise money with your local CC group do a bake sale, garage sale, silent auction dinner, etc. o Sell items you can make and reproduce for a profit (crafts, bookmarks, t shirts, scarves, etc). o Raise awareness, start a FB page, ask people to help you brainstorm, donate in a child’s name. o Pray and ask God what things you can do to help those in need, pray as you make the map that He would guide you and your family into what can be done. If you have any questions or do anything, please shoot me an email I’d love to post it on our page! I’m going to set up a donate button on the blog, so if you can’t raise money in your own community you can just log on

and donate any amount. All of the money raised will go directly to Compassion’s International Water fund. Join us today in spreading the word! To God be the Glory!

Cycle 1 Week 16 Lesson Plans (Science) © Classical Curriculum 2013

Day 2: History • Video/ Book • Venn Diagram • Glyph

Day 3: Geography/ Math • Watch African Video • Do African Water map • Marshmallow Shapes

Day 1: Science Lesson ( Make changes according to your child’s ability and objectives.)

o  Go over objectives for your child. Reference the objective box on overview page. Discuss how you are looking for them to learn those things today and throughout the week.

o  Read or reference a book from the book list. o  Watch the first video from National Geographic, “Volcanoes 101” and use discussion questions

to further understanding. If children are old enough they can watch the video and write down the answers themselves. Then you can re watch the video with them.

1.  What did scientists believe volcanoes to be a few hundred years ago? Scientists believed they were burning mountains of fire.

2. How many volcanoes are considered “active”? About 1500. 3. Where is the ring of fire and why is it important? The Pacific Ocean, it’s importance is because 90% of the active volcanoes are located there. 4.What causes the earth’s crust to melt? What is formed from it? Friction from sifting plates melts the Earth’s crust. Magma is formed. 5. What kind of volcano does running lave create? Shield volcanoes 6. What kind of volcano does thick sticky lava form? Composite volcanoes 7. What makes Kilauea unique? It’s located over a hot spot in the Earth’s crust and is flowing constantly. 8. Why do they say Hawaii is the only state still growing? The lava forming from Kilauea is hardening and forming new land. 9. What kind of flow was Mt. Vesuvius’ eruption? A pyroclastic flow. 10. How much of the Earth’s surface are created by volcanoes? Scientists believe volcanoes created 80% of the Earth’s surface.

o  Make a volcano model. This is a step by step demonstration for making a volcano eruption. http://www.sciencebob.com/experiments/volcano.php The only changes I would make is I would use a play do or modeling clay formation for the volcano and a water bottle with a small opening.

o  Have the students mark out the “Ring of Fire” on a laminated map using dry erase markers. o  Go over the objectives for each child and discuss them further throughout the week, if

understanding is needed. o  Watch additional videos if desired, or do the additional activities of making a brochure.

Time Allotment • Teaching Time with 1st link:10 minutes • Volcano Activity: 20 min • Ring of Fire: 10 min

Day 1: Science • “Volcanoes 101” • Make a volcano • Draw Ring of Fire

Materials Needed Day 1: o play do (prepared in advance) see blog for recipe o an empty water bottle o dish soap o vinegar o baking soda o food coloring o large pan/ tray

Day 1: Science Key Points These are the classifications of volcanoes:

• Active- An active volcano is a volcano that has had eruptions within the last 50- 1,000 years and shows signs of erupting again. • Dormant- A dormant volcano is a volcano that has not erupted in the last 1,000 years but can still erupt in the future. • Extinct- An extinct volcano is a volcano that hasn’t erupted in the last 1,000 years and shows no signs of erupting again.

*Intermittent- An “intermittent” volcano is rarely used in books and websites. I found one definition that said it was a less “active” volcano. It gave no numbers as to how they qualify it. However, most scientists do not use this term at all.!

Websites Continued A great site for resource. It shows the plates moving and provides a good summary. http://kids.discovery.com/games/build-play/volcano-explorer

This is a video of one of the largest active volcanoes today. http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/environment/environment-natural-disasters/volcanoes/beyond-the-lava/

Additional Activities Students should make a brochure. This is a project that should take them about a week to complete. In it they can discuss all the types, stages, causes, historic eruptions, and interesting facts about volcanoes using the websites and books provided. 2
