THE PYRAMIDS
ENGINEERING
Applying scientific knowledge for practical purposes.
Ancient Egyptians made great progress in the field of engineering.
SOME FACTS
138 pyramids have been found in Egypt. Pyramids are actually tombs for the pharaohs.
The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the largest. There are 2 million blocks used in its construction.
HOW WERE THEY BUILT?
Slaves were used for labor. A
large ramp had to be built to
carry the blocks to the top.
When it was finished, the ramp had to be torn down.
This map shows the grounds for the most famous of the pyramids.

SMOOTH SURFACE PYRAMIDS
Many pyramids had a smooth surface at one time that has
crumbled with age. When they were new, they reflected the sun
and looked heavenly.
THE SPHINX

The nose was shot off by Turks during the 15th century. It also had a fake beard at one time and was painted
