Tadao Ando Church of the Light 1989 Osaka Japan

Philadelphia is a city awash with memorable architecture so itrsquos fitting that I stumbledacross The Architect Says Quotes Quips and Words of Wisdom at the PhiladelphiaMuseum of Artrsquos store which offers a well-curated assortment of books inside ofHorace Trumbauerrsquos imposing Greek structure prominently situated on Fairmont Hill

Laura Dushkes the bookrsquos editor works as a librarian at NBBJ architectural firm inSeattle and began collecting quotes about architecture while purchasing reading andcataloging books about design for the firm The Architect Says Quotes Quips and Wordsof Wisdom is an elegant compendium of quotations from more than 100 of historyrsquosmost opinionatedmdashand dissentingmdashminds

The book offers a fascinating glimpse at the creative process ldquoItrsquos not a sign of creativityto have sixty-five ideas for one problemrdquo says Jan Kaplicky ldquoItrsquos just a waste of energyrdquo

Then therersquos this quote by Charles Eames ldquoHere is one of the few effective keys to thedesign problem mdash the ability of the designer to recognize as many of the constraints aspossible mdash his willingness and enthusiasm for working within these constraintsConstraints of price of size of strength of balance of surface of time and so forthrdquo

Dushkesrsquo layout and sequencing of quotes also highlights sharp differences of opinionin the field of design Mies van der Rohersquos ldquoLess is morerdquo versus Robert Venturirsquosresponse ldquoLess is a borerdquo is a good example I also like these rifts on Louis Sullivanrsquosobservation that ldquoform ever follows functionrdquo ldquoForm follows form not functionrdquo saysPhilip Johnson or ldquoForm follows profitrdquo (Richard Rogers)

Also interesting is the relationship between architecture and other creative fields ldquoIlearn more from creative people in other disciplines than I do even from otherarchitects because I think they have a way of looking at the world that is reallyimportantrdquo says Seattle-based architect and MacDowell Colony fellow Tom Kundig

But there are differences between creative fields too as Renzo Piano points out ldquoYoucan put down a bad book you can avoid listening to bad music but you cannot missthe ugly tower block opposite your houserdquo

Itrsquos unfortunate that architecture receives so little attention in the mainstream pressand art publications for itrsquos the art form we have the closest relationship with ashumans Whether wersquore shopping in a huge box store attending a concert in an historicchurch working in an office cubicle or simply arriving home after a long day at workwe inhabit and interact with architecture on a daily basis but how often do we thinkabout good and bad design

As Renzo Piano once said architecture is ldquoa socially dangerous art because it is animposed artrdquo Wersquore conditioned to accept ugliness as inevitable The end result is anumbing apathy about architecture as a whole or worse a lingering impression inAmerican culture that quality design is only for a certain elite class

But Dushkesrsquos collection of quotes helps us to pause and realize that all design involvesa series of philosophical choices and aesthetic judgments The difference between aFrank Gehry whose ldquoblobitecturerdquo sometimes resembles an alien form beamed downfrom space and a Samuel Mockbee whose socially-engaged Rural Studio project allowsdesign students at Auburn University to create homes and community buildings fordisadvantaged residents in Hale County Alabama couldnrsquot be greater And yet botharchitects must work within a given environment and with certain limitations But TheArchitect Says reminds us that they are apples and orangesmdashboth fruit and yet entirelyunique from one another

navigates with a wheelchair complete mobility within her home by constructing subtle access ramps wide

doorways and low bathroom features The walls of the home were formed using salvaged wood from a

This 1000 square-foot weekend cabin called the Delter Shelter designed by architect Tom Kundig is basically

a steel box on stilts and can be completely shuttered when the owner is away Situated near a river in a

floodplain the 20rsquo x 20rsquo square footprint rises three stories Large 10rsquo x 18rsquo steel shutters can be closed

simultaneously using a hand crank (Photo by Tim Bies courtesy Olson Kundig Architects)

But Dushkesrsquos collection of quotes helps us to pause and realize that all design involvesa series of philosophical choices and aesthetic judgments The difference between aFrank Gehry whose ldquoblobitecturerdquo sometimes resembles an alien form beamed downfrom space and a Samuel Mockbee whose socially-engaged Rural Studio project allowsdesign students at Auburn University to create homes and community buildings fordisadvantaged residents in Hale County Alabama couldnrsquot be greater And yet botharchitects must work within a given environment and with certain limitations But TheArchitect Says reminds us that they are apples and orangesmdashboth fruit and yet entirelyunique from one another

rainwater in daily cleaning routines Rural Studio students provided Mrs Harris who is handicapped and

navigates with a wheelchair complete mobility within her home by constructing subtle access ramps wide
