“There where you are, God is”. St Mary of the Cross MacKillop

“Your talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is

your gift back to God.” Leo Buscaglia

Dear Parents and Friends,

I often think about the above quote whenever I see our talented OLA students shining. Last

Tuesday, 20 weeks of rehearsal came to fruition when our Stage 3 children performed at St

Dominics’s Penrith in the a3 choir. Their performances both solo and in the combined

schools choir were outstanding. Their talent was on display again today, at the Hawkesbury

City Eisteddfod.

Yesterday, OLA students from Year 1 – 4 demonstrated their verse speaking talent at the

Hawkesbury City Festival. Once again, OLA students had the opportunity to shine! Choral

speaking requires a special technique of its own. They are adjudicated on their ability to be

controlled, unified and harmonized and their ability to speak with unity of articulation as

well as unity of pitch and inflection. Our students were once again outstanding! Year One

students were awarded ‘highly commended’. Year 2 students were awarded first place for

their section! Our Year 4 students were awarded 2nd place just behind our Year 3 students

who were also awarded first place for their section as well as receiving the perpetual trophy

for best choral performance overall across all sections!

God has gifted all of us (students and teachers) with talent, and yesterday our students gave

their talent gift back to God…….

God Bless

Sunday 10th September Gospel Reflection (Mt 18:15-20)

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

If your brother or sister listens to you, you will have won that person back. Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others with you: the evidence of two or three witnesses is required to sustain any charge. But if he refuses to listen to these, report it to the community; and if he refuses to listen to the community, treat him like a pagan or a tax collector. ‘I tell you solemnly, whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven. ‘I tell you solemnly once again, if two of you on earth agree to ask anything at all, it will be granted to you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them.’

Gospel Reflection Ezekiel and Jesus both have good advice for dealing with people when wrong things are done. How easy is it to confront a friend when you think you have been wronged or treated badly? Do you tend to ignore the wrong? Do you talk about it honestly? Or do you tend to hold a grudge? Does the advice in today’s readings relate to today’s situations, or do you think we need to look at other alternatives when dealing with modern wrongs? How so? Jesus assures us that whenever two or three pray together, Jesus is always there, and our prayers are always answered. Do you think that prayers are always answered? Or do you think it depends on the type of prayer and what is asked for? Or do you think that prayers are always answered, but sometimes the answer is no? How do you think prayer works? What kind of prayers do you most often pray? Do your prayers ask for something? Do you pray for strength and guidance? Do you ever pray with one or two others? (Liturgy.help.com 8-9-2017)

Mrs Byrne’s Holy Land Pilgrimage Reflection (From the Dead Sea to the Sea of Galilee) After travelling over the Jordan border, we headed to the Sea of Galilee. This was an extremely special moment, being in a place where I have only heard about in the Gospel. The Sea of Galilee was an extremely calm place and a place where Jesus and his disciples spent lots of time. Jesus spent a lot of time talking to his followers. We visited Tabgha, where Jesus fed the 5000. We took time to reflect by the edge of the Sea of Galilee and were fortunate enough to sail on the Sea of Galilee and celebrate mass on a humble fishing boat. The boat’s

engines were turned off and we floated on the sea. It was peaceful. We were asked to reflect on God’s love in the ordinariness of our lives. How we can be the face of God in simple actions and how we can open our hearts and minds to the marginalised in our communities.

What’s happening in RE @ OLA in Term 3 Social Justice -11th September ‘Gold Coin Casual Clothes Mufti Day’ - All money collected will be donated to the Diocesan Work fund. Students are able to wear casual clothes and closed in shoes. -‘Operation Christmas child’-Samaritan Purse - The boxes have arrived. If you would like us to send home a box, please contact the office or send your child to the office. Sacrament of Confirmation --7th September Lesson 2 for parents and children. -14th or 21st September rehearsals -15th or 22nd September Confirmation nights Forms need to be completed and handed into the parish office.

Operation Christmas Child Last year OLA decided to support Operation Christmas Child. This was an extremely successful Social Justice program, where many families gave of their time and generosity to share the God’s love and provide a unique gift to children around the world who need some Christmas Cheer. This year we have decided to continue our support of Samaritan Purse Foundation for our Christmas outreach program. (www.samaritanspurse.org.au/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/)

Operation Christmas child is all about giving children from poverty or war stricken countries the precious gift of God’s unconditional love. We are asking families at OLA to collect a shoebox from the office and fill it with something to wear, something to play with something for school, something to love, something special and something for personal hygiene. The shoebox you pack with your family will very likely be the first gift the child has ever received. If you and your family would like to participate in ‘Operation Christmas Child’, please contact the office by Email, note or in person to let us know that you would like a shoebox this year. We will send shoeboxes home as soon as they are delivered. Attach to the shoebox will be information on how to pack your shoebox and labels for you to select a boy or girl and a particular age group and paying the $10 postage. If you would like more than one shoebox let us know so we can collect more shoeboxes. The children will be learning about ‘Operation Christmas Child’ in class as part of their mission units in Religion. We have encouraged children to add a photo and note in each shoebox so the child/ren can see who has given them their gift. We would also like our families to send in a family photo to create a photo board displaying how we can be the ‘Face of God.’

Literacy News Verse Speaking Eisteddfod

Congratulations to our Years 1-6 students on their recent performances at the Hawkesbury Verse Speaking & Choral Eisteddfods. We are so proud of the group performances and achieving such fabulous results. The benefits of participating in these eisteddfods is so vast. From building confidence in performing to a large audience to speaking clearly with great expression and then transferring this to spelling unknown words correctly. To our teachers, OLA students are so lucky to have such dedicated teachers who have worked so hard to prepare them for these events. Thank you to the parents who could join us at the Windsor Function Centre. We are so proud of you!

Thank You Dear friends, parents and teachers at OLA, I want to offer a sincere thanks to everyone in the parish and school community who has so generously helped over the last month or so, since Christine has had to be on bed rest in hospital. We have another month to go, and this week Dominic and Timothy will be travelling to their grandparents’ home interstate, where there will be support and care for them until after their new sibling arrives early October. I have been really touched by all the help with evening meals, as well as offers of cleaning and care for the kids, and the flexibility of the school while we go through a difficult patch. Sincere thanks to you all - this really is a wonderful Catholic community. Please pray for Christine who will be especially missing the kids over the next few weeks, and for her and baby to continue to receive the best care possible. Thank you again! Nigel Zimmermann (father of Dominic in 1W and Timothy in KW).

From the Classroom of….4W

This week we have been writing imaginative stories based from a image or sound we hear. Our focus has been to use sizzling starts, tightening tension and ending with excitement.

A3 Captivate Performance

Congratulations to our amazing Year 5 and Year 6 students who took part in the annual a3 performance this week at St Dominics College, Kingswood. The children have been working hard over the last two terms to learn four choral singing items and one dance piece. On Tuesday night we were dazzled by their singing and dancing skills on a professional stage, accompanied by a live band.

In particular, we would like to commend our three main speakers from Year 6: Connor Knowles, Nicholas Hallal and Bella Masters who opened the show with an entertaining dialogue. Congratulations also to our talented singing soloists from Year 5: Pierre-Antoine La, Olivia Lincoln and Alannah Lock. A number of other children also took on group feature roles throughout the performance.

Well done students, we are very proud of your efforts!

MacKillop Netball Last week I competed in a netball tournament in Tamworth for the MacKillop netball team. There were 14 very good teams that we had to play against across the three days. My team placed 6th in the end. Everyone played very well and we all made new friendships. It was a great experience and I hope to do again! By Jade Richardson Congratulations Jade

Mindfulness at OLA What does it mean to be a mindful eater?

When you first taste the food, try to give it your full attention.

Eating mindfully means slowing down, expressing gratitude

for the food we are eating, being satisfied with food,

savouring the flavour, the texture the feel and paying attention

to why we eat. Why not try mindful eating at one meal time

this week, focusing attention not only on the meal but each

other’s company as well. Terina Macare

Threatened Species Children’s Art Competition Congratulations to Anneliese, Thomas and Amelia Gutwenger who each had artwork shortlisted for an art competition run by ForrestMedia – an organisation that aims to increase community awareness of NSW threatened species. The children attended the prize Giving Ceremony at Parliament House yesterday and Anneliese was awarded 2nd place in the 8-10 year olds and Amelia was Highly Commended in the 5-7 year olds. All three of the children’s entries have been selected for exhibition at the Royal Botanic Gardens over the next month, with the possibility of them moving onto Legislative Assembly in Canberra thereafter.
