Frame Fitting1. Before taking any measurements, make sure the patient is sit-

ting straight, without any back support.

2. Adjust the frame to correctly fit the patient.

3. Ensure a pantascopic tilt of 9° -12°.

4. Minimize the vertex distance by fitting the frame as close tothe face as possible. This will ensure a wide field of vision atall ranges.

Pupil Distance MeasurementBe aware that the PD can differ from eye to eye.

1. Whenever possible, use a pupilometer for measuring pupil dis-tance, as this provides the most accurate results.

2. If a pupilometer is not available:

a. Position yourself at the patient’s eye level, making surehe or she is looking directly into your eyes.

b. Mark the pupil center on the demo lens in the frame.

c. Place the demo lens on the centration chart and read the monocular PD.

Height Measurement FittingBe aware that the fitting height can differ from eye to eye.

1. Position yourself at the patient’s eye level.

2. Mark the pupil center on the demo lens in the frame.

Cut-Out Confirmation1. Check both the right and left lenses.

2. Align the pupil center marking over the cross on the centrationchart.

3. Make sure the frame shape falls within the selected lensdiameter.

Lens Verification1. If lenses are not marked, restore the markings with a marker.

2. Fit the frame with the glazed lenses on the patient and verifythat the fitting cross is aligned with the pupil center.

Location, location, locationIn order to identify progressive lenses currently being worn, or tocompare them to others available from a variety of manufacturers,doctors and dispensers must be able to locate four critical productidentifiers.

The Progressive Identifier illustrates the four key identifiers for eachlens:

• The location of the Fitting Cross and its distance from the 180°line;

• Any unique Engraved Symbols that may be displayed on the180 line (the standard is two circles);

• The location of the Add Power on the lens, which may appearabbreviated (25 indicates a +2.50 add, for example);

• The Identifying Symbol or company logo that on most lensesappears on the right side just beneath the 180° line — enlargedfor fast and easy recognition. (In selected lenses the symbol mayappear on the left side. This is indicated on the lens diagram.)

• In addition, each lens manufacturers’ recommended minimumfitting height is included for easy comparison.

Three steps to successWith the information contained in the Progressive Identifier, doctorsand retailers can quickly identify any lens currently being worn(including those recently discontinued), and confidently select the bestnew lens for their patients’ needs.

Step One: Most modern PALs are marked by laser engravings (someolder lenses may have fluorescent marks) that become easily visiblewhen viewed under an intense light against a dark background. Lookfor these engraved symbols and refer to the Index on Page 2 for thelocation of the full lens description.

Step Two: Determine the patient’s old Rx. If this is information is notin your records, read the prescription off the lens.

Step Three: Compare to the new Rx and assess any changes thatmight suggest a change in lens design or material. Remember toconsider your patient’s lifestyle, work habits, hobbies, and framechoice when choosing the appropriate lens.

Center the frame over the pyramid lines,with The Fitting Cross lined up with thetop horizontal line, marked “O.” Thisis the 180° line as shown on the lensdiagrams in the ProgressiveIdentifier.

With the frame in this position,determine the monocular PD for

each lens by reading the number on thehorizontal line directly underneath the180° line.

With the Fitting Cross positioned onthe top line, the fitting height of eachlens can be determined by readingthe number on the line where thebottom of the lens rests.
