Dear Friends,

I feel so fortunate to be the head of this dynamic school located in New York’s Financial District, the fastest growing residential neighborhood in the city.

At Léman Manhattan, our mission is to educate children not just to excel in academics, but to build a global perspective on the world that enables them to become adults who embrace life with zest, empathy and enthusiasm. First and foremost, our objective is to provide the highest caliber educational experience in ways that build students’ character, confidence, critical thinking skills and personal talents. We accomplish this through small class sizes and personalized instruction designed to address each student’s unique learning style, goals, interests and strengths. Our open and constant communication between parents, teachers, students, and administrators is a unique component of our approach that builds strong partnerships to help students succeed.

Our students are encouraged to appreciate and participate in studio and performing arts and a wide variety of athletics, and to build their social skills through community service and collaboration across our sister Léman schools, which bring together over 50 years of international learning expertise. Our High School, which graduated its third senior class in June 2015, provides the structure and depth necessary to ensure that our students succeed at their top-choice colleges or universities. What excites me most about Léman Manhattan is our unique ability to combine new and old traditions. We couple the advantages of what’s tried and true from our namesake sister school Collège du Léman, one of the world’s premier international boarding schools, with the energy, excitement and fresh, contemporary thinking of an innovative school unencumbered by the dictates of convention. Through our new affiliation with Nord Anglia Education, we will benefit from expanded global resources as part of a network of 41 schools across 15 countries.

It’s an exciting time to be part of Léman Manhattan. I personally look forward to welcoming you to our community.

Sincerely,

Drew Alexander

Igniting students’ passion for learning through superior teachingTeaching excellence is a foundational pillar of the Léman Manhattan experience. Through differentiated, small group and one-on-one instruction, our teachers get to know and appreciate each child’s unique interests, strengths, goals and learning styles. Our international network and recognition allows Léman Manhattan to attract and retain top teaching talent from across the globe. The Léman faculty is a diverse group of educators who bring a variety of professional and life experiences to our school, including working in international schools outside of the U.S., in other New York City independent schools, or in other career fields prior to teaching. They approach their charge at Léman with a shared mission: to help every child grow and succeed, and to build a community of teaching excellence and institutional pride. We place intense focus on every child’s learning experience, encouraging curiosity, accomplishment and growth. Teachers at every grade level strive to ensure their students fully master lesson content, build critical thinking skills, make connections between their work and the world, and enhance their skills to the greatest extent of their aptitudes and abilities. Our faculty is highly collaborative, working in grade level and vertical teams to cultivate best practice teaching methodologies and ensure curriculum is vertically articulated to support each student’s continuous growth. Léman teachers create nurturing, inclusive learning environments and teach to each child’s interest and ability level each day, in each lesson, to achieve progress against individual goals. Léman teachers are energetic professionals who care deeply about their students and their own skill-building. They seek out professional development opportunities throughout the year, and are committed to honing their craft to enable our students to benefit from innovative educational practices. Léman teachers do not simply provide superior instruction — they lead, inspire, excite and relate to students in a caring, supportive manner to support students in pursuing their goals and making their dreams a reality.

“We are so fortunate to have a group of knowledgeable, caring, and energetic teachers who prepare our students with the academic foundation and fluency they will need at all levels—throughout their time at Léman and beyond.” – Emily Khan, Interim Head of Upper School

Providing a personalized experience to every childAt the heart of the Léman experience is an outcomes-based personalized approach to instruction that educates the whole child and fosters academic and personal growth. By teaching to standards in a structured but student-centered environment, we empower children to carve their own paths and assume accountability for results.

Starting in kindergarten, each Léman student, in partnership with his or her teacher and parents, develops an individual Personal Learning Plan (PLP) at the beginning of the school year. Informed by prior year academic performance, test scores, teacher and parent feedback, and student goals, the PLP charts the course for the student across three key areas: academic goals, enrichment goals, and habits and attitudes of learning.

Through small group and one-on-one instruction geared towards students’ interests, academic needs and learning styles, children build confidence and resiliency as they set and achieve goals. Using the most sophisticated methods of monitoring and measuring student progress, we constantly assess learning achievement in our classrooms. Each student’s growth is tracked and measured throughout the year, and is assessed and evolved via regular parent-teacher conferences.

”Our goal is to ignite the full academic potential of every student. Our dedicated faculty and staff promote intellectual, emotional and social growth, while emphasizing problem solving, critical thinking and higher-order reasoning through our curriculum.” – Jerry Maraia, Head of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment & Associate Head of Lower School

academics LOWER SCHOOL

Encouraging curiosity in the youngest learnersOur Lower School is a vibrant, joyful place. Curriculum is focused on educating the whole child and developing strong critical thinking skills. We offer a diverse program that encourages students to reach their academic, social and emotional potential in a challenging yet nurturing environment that embraces family, community and citizenship. Through our many offerings, children find their passions and develop their interests and strengths. As a result, our students become independent thinkers and competent decision makers who are excited to learn.

In addition to emphasizing proficiency in reading, writing and math, our Lower School program focuses on world languages, the humanities, science and physical education. Music and visual arts help to encourage creativity, open-ended thinking and cooperation.

We also know children learn best when they are given hands-on activities, which can take many forms. For an art lesson, PreK students turn their classroom into an art gallery and write invitations to parents and friends. To learn about supply and demand, first graders sell recycled items they’ve made for Earth Day. Our youngest students are often the source of the biggest ideas at Léman. Our goal is to ignite learners’ minds in limitless ways.

With a small student-teacher ratio, our faculty get to know our children and parents very well. Parents are invited to be in touch with our teachers frequently. We have high expectations of our children’s work and behavior, and strongly believe in providing clear and ongoing feedback to students and families. Our teachers provide thoughtful attention to each child’s social and emotional health and development, and focus on building classroom communities in which children feel secure and safe to take risks, and in which all voices are heard and respected.

academics MIDDLE SCHOOL

Fostering critical thinking during their most formative yearsThe Middle School program at Léman Manhattan offers academically enriching and demanding classes to bolster problem-solving combined with opportunities to travel to special academic and athletic events within our family of schools.

Critical thinking is extremely important to the Middle School curriculum. We help students lay the foundation for evaluating sources and information to make educated choices and acquire the building blocks they need to achieve success in future academics and in life. We teach life skills such as strong communication, leadership, time management, and preparation for testing environments, which become part of students’ “tool belts” for learning which they will utilize in high school and beyond.

At Léman, each Middle School student is part of a small advisory group that provides a supportive forum for discussing topics including building strong character and developing personal goals. Co-curricular offerings such as athletic, theatrical, and other high-interest clubs are also an important part of our students’ lives as they discover new activities and interests.

Partnership with parents is an essential part of a successful Middle School experience. Advisors meet with parents and students three times a year to review each child’s goals and progress. Conferences are led by the student with support from his or her advisor. Working together in the best interest of each student is vital to the success of each child.

The IB focuses on building knowledge, skills, and independent critical and creative thought to help students to make connections between areas of study.

We also provide unparalleled college advisory services. With two dedicated college counselors on staff, the collective wisdom of our network of sister schools, and Léman’s Advisory Board, our students benefit from a tremendous wealth of resources to help them achieve their desired outcome. Our first three graduating classes gained acceptance to top institutions including University of Pennsylvania, Duke, Johns Hopkins, University of Michigan, Middlebury, Oberlin and Skidmore.

In addition to our core academic curriculum, our students are offered numerous co-curricular experiences that take advantage of the tremendous diversity of opportunities in Manhattan. ATHLETICS

Building confidence and community through sportsThe goal of the Léman Manhattan Athletic Department is to provide students with opportunities that build confidence, inspire teamwork, foster good health and bring together our community. We encourage students to embrace physical activity that enhances health and wellness. We offer a robust athletic program that challenges students to perform their personal best, both as individuals and as part of a team. Through organized and individual activities, students learn to set goals, develop the discipline required to meet them, and celebrate their achievements. We incorporate physical activity from an early age in our Lower School through structured and free-play physical education classes, swim instruction, and recess time on our rooftop playground. At the junior varsity and varsity level, student athletes are expected to commit themselves to the team and to continued self-improvement. High School athletics include increased emphasis on physical conditioning, fundamental skills, strategy and teamwork. Our outstanding coaches emphasize the character benefits of participating in team sports. All coaches work with administrators, the school psychologist and teachers to ensure the educational well-being of our student athletes. Each of our campuses features a full-sized gym with a rock climbing wall and multi-lane swimming pool. Athletic offerings include baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, swimming, table tennis, track and volleyball.

Léman Manhattan is a member of the Athletic Conference of Independent Schools (ACIS), whose member schools include Berkeley Carroll, Brooklyn Friends, Dwight, Friends Seminary, Packer, Saint Ann’s and Staten Island Academy. The Léman Bulls are the proud winners of the 2014-2015 ACIS Playoff Championships in both Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball. Our Boys Varsity Basketball team is also 2014-2015 ACIS League Champions.

“Our son Sam (class of 2013) was an All American Scholastic Athlete, and was selected to swim at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs. He was able to get all of his assignments during winter recess and return to school totally prepared because the whole faculty and administration were so supportive. One of his Olympic coaches commented: ‘This is a school that helps Sam academically but also respects him as a person.’” – Linda Sherman, Parent

STUDENT LIFE

Forging new experiences by leading, advocating, doingIn a city where dreams know no bounds, the opportunities at Léman Manhattan are limitless. Our small class size provides students with the ability to create their own path and seek out individual leadership roles in performing arts, student government, sports teams or clubs.

COMMUNITY OUTREACHCommunity service is an integral part of a student’s life at Léman Manhattan. Through personal interactions and projects, students develop an understanding and sense of responsibility about their school community, the surrounding neighborhood and the entire world. Students support a variety of organizations such as New York Says Thank You, God’s Love We Deliver, charity: water and City Harvest.

TECHNOLOGY Technology is an essential part of a student’s life at Léman Manhattan and is integrated throughout the curriculum to support our students’ path to digital responsibility and global citizenship in the 21st century. Students learn how to navigate and perform online research, create and critique online content, and edit and produce digital design pieces and multimedia presentations within all curricular areas. Technology-specific courses are offered in both divisions, including digital video production and graphic arts. We also offer a variety of after-school opportunities in both divisions for students to practice and explore other digital tools and design technologies.

CUISINEBoth school cafés are staffed with professional chefs who create nutritious and delicious organic food for children. Each day, a main dish and vegetarian option is offered, along with a salad bar and sandwich station. In our Lower School, teachers eat lunch with their classes, and families may participate in an early bird program starting at 8am to enjoy breakfast with their children before school. As a school committed to green living, Léman students compost food waste from our cafeterias daily, which is then used in a Léman rooftop garden tended to by Lower School students.

SCHOOL TRADITIONSOur location in the Financial District and international community serves as a rich foundation for the development of Léman traditions. We kick off and close the year with school-wide ceremonies to celebrate a new start and honor the year’s accomplishments; our students sing at the New York Stock Exchange annual holiday tree-lighting; our seniors cement the milestone of graduation with photographs on the steps of Federal Hall and with the iconic Wall Street Bull.
