European partnership launch NANOINSULATE

Insulation panels that are 4 times more energy efficient than current solutions

Staffanstorp, September 2010 – New durable, robust, cost effective opaque and transparent vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) providing product lifetimes in excess of 50 years suitable for a variety of new build and retrofit building applications could soon become a reality, thanks to a recently‐launched research project, part‐financed by the European Commission. Leif Gullberg, project manager at Airglass and partner in NANOINSULATE, said:   “Airglass is very pleased to be able to contribute to this exciting new develop‐ment project. We see a great potential in NANOINSULATE to further develop our key areas of expertise – aerogels and composites – to new areas, such as energy efficient buildings.”  Airglass is one of the leading manufacturers of large monolithic super‐insulating aerogel panels and has participated in a number of EU projects, both to develop the material for different applications and improve the manufacturing process to make aerogel panels, including aerogel granules, proving economic viability. Sales of aerogels are made to various universities, institutes and companies worldwide.   NANOINSULATE project, co‐ordinated by Kingspan Plc (Ireland) and managed by Pera Innovation Ltd, (UK) began its activities in July 2010 and is aiming to develop nanotechnology‐based high‐performance opaque and transparent insulation sys‐tems for energy‐efficient buildings.   The project brings together a consortium of six industrial and four research‐based partners from seven EC countries. By incorporating new nanotechnology‐based core materials (nanofoam, aerogels, aerogel composites) and multi‐layer high bar‐rier films in vacuum insulation panels, both transparent and opaque, the consor‐tium is hoping to reduce CO2 emissions from heating buildings by approximately 50%. This reduction could be achieved with NANOINSULATE products that are only 25 mm thick, giving a cost‐effective renovation without the need of changing all the reveals and ledges. Similarly, significant reductions in CO2 emissions are envisaged by replacement of double glazed units by transparent VIPs in existing buildings. A Life Cycle Assessment together with a safety and service‐life costing analysis will be undertaken to prove economic viability. With a total budget of just over 6 million Euro the project will be completed in the summer of 2014 by demonstrating its potential for development of building sites around Europe. Airglass has the third largest budget in the project.

® airglass® transparent superinsulation glass

CV Airglass Background AIRGLASS was founded in 1983 as a R&D company, based on the re-search on silica aerogels conducted at the University of Lund, Sweden. These aerogel tiles were used in a large Cherenkov detector at the ISR at CERN, Geneva. In a collaboration with Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in the USA. Airglass developed a method of making small hollow spheres for fusion experi-ments. Airglass supplies research institutes and companies all over the world with aerogel sheets for scientific use. Airglass has a very good ex-perience in the field of handling super critical media for drying and extrac-tion purposes. During the last years Airglass has participated in a number of European Commission project in development and production of high insulating and light transmitting aerogel for window glazing and other ap-plications. Airglass is the only supplier of aerogel panels of size 55 x 55 cm2, thickness between 0,5 to 4 cm Areas of expertise The company has for many years been pursuing the sol-gel problems concerning hydrogel, lyogel, xerogel etc. to produce aerogel and aerogel-like materials of high quality in a large-scale production research facility. Also the main activities have been to change the characteristics of the nanoporous materials by given it higher strength by polymers, hydropho-bicity and colouring, develop composites, large variation in density, doping with different chemicals and metals to obtain very special properties. The company has a well-equipped laboratory for the different challenges. The drying of the different samples and panels of wetgels takes place in a 3000-litre autoclave system, almost fully automatized, with super critical carbon dioxide. Smaller autoclaves are being used for exotic composi-tions. The research has been heavy focused on transparent and non-transparent insulation material combining super insulation properties, strong, non-toxic, ecofriendly, price worthy, produced in large panels or custom designed. Airglass has built up a large interglobal network of experts in different ar-eas of physics, chemistry and electronics during the years of problem solving.
