NALP: 88 percent of 2009 law grads are employed

By Allison Petty Special to the Law Bulletin

SPRINGFIELD - Troubled economic times have desperate law school graduates turning to temporary jobs, solo practiceor positions that do not require their newly earned degrees, a new study has found.

The study, which the National Association for Legal Career Professionals (NALP) released Thursday, shows the Class of2009 has an 88.3 percent employment rate. That's higher than many expected, and it's just 4 percent less than theemployment rate for new graduates two years ago.

But the study also found that while most law school graduates had jobs, they were not the law-firm spots many mighthave coveted:

Of those who had jobs, about 22 percent were still looking for work (compared with 16 percent of the previous class).

About a quarter of all jobs reported were temporary.

Just 70.8 percent obtained a job for which they were required to pass the bar, which is down from nearly 75 percent ofthe Class of 2008.

Solo practitioners account for 2.9 percent of the graduates, which in raw numbers is more than 1,000 people andaccounts for a 1 percent jump from the year before.

About 42 percent of law schools said they provide on-campus post-graduate jobs for their students, which accounts forthe jump in graduates' academic employment from 2.3 percent for the Class of 2008 to 3.5 percent for the Class of2009.

The findings arise from the survey's results submitted by 192 American Bar Association-approved law schools, accounting for the status of 40,833 graduates as of Feb. 15, 2010.

The statistics did not surprise Scott N. Green, who is a member of the Class of 2009.

Green, who lives in Lakeview, graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law in May 2009. He hired aheadhunter to help him with his resume, took a variety of classes in law school so he could practice in any area andvolunteers with CARPLS, the Coordinated Advice & Referral Program for Legal Services.

But Green still spends his weekdays searching for a job. To earn money, he performs magic tricks at children's birthdayparties on the weekends.

Most firms don't even bother to send rejection letters these days, he said, calling his search "equal parts hope anddisillusionment."

But Green said he isn't willing to give up on a career in law.

"I went to law school and worked hard in law school because I believed I would make a good attorney and it's somethingI have a passion for, and those things are still true," he said.

James G. Leipold, executive director of NALP, said while the employment rate has declined, it is still higher than manyexpected.

"This represents employment nine months after graduation, and it makes sense that even in this economy most peoplewould be employed in some fashion," Leipold said, because law students in particular have bills to pay.

He said tearing apart the numbers revealed greater weaknesses in the economy, with many law students turning totemporary employment or solo practice.

"For a person just coming out of law school to open up their own shop, there are real challenges associated with that,"Leipold said.

Harold J. Krent, dean of Chicago-Kent College of Law, said the college has launched a series of programs to preparestudents for opening their own practices. Those embarking on such a risk need business instincts and marketing skills aswell as legal expertise, he said.

"Law schools traditionally have not done the best job of teaching students the surrounding business environment inwhich they start to operate, so we wanted to start to counteract that," he said.

Krent said there has been a huge sea change in the number of associates hired by major firms, but the government andsmaller firms have seen a less dramatic reduction in new hires.

"That's not to deny that we're not undergoing a very significant change, probably the most significant change we've hadin the last 70 years in terms of the legal market," Krent said. "But it's not all bleak."
